FAQ’sWhen’s the best time to visit? All year! Wanaka has four distinct seasons, each with their own unique characteristics. Spring (September-November) & autumn (March-May) are off-peak periods.
What will the weather be like?Wanaka has less than half the NZ average rainfall. Spring is lush & green with snow on the mountains; it’s hot & dry in summer; the most settled weather is usually in Autumn; and Winter is cold and crisp with snow on the surrounding mountains for skiing & snowboarding.
What should I wear?Practical, active outdoors-wear is ideal with layers best for spring, autumn & winter. Wanaka is a very relaxed & laid-back town so there’s no need to dress up for dinner…unless you want to!
How long should I stay? With kids the longer the better so they can settle, we suggest 4-7 days. Plus, there is so much to do, you will need it!
How do I get around? Most tour & activity operators will collect you from your accommodation & there are shuttles or taxis available if you don’t have a car. Wanaka is a compact town so walking or biking is easy, & there’s plenty of free car parking.

Day 3
Day 4
Horse Trekking either in the beautiful Cardrona Valley or around the lake at Rippon Vineyard
Don’t forget about the Wanaka Pool!
The Cardrona Hotel is a ‘must see’, with a large outdoor area it’s great for the kids while you have a drink or lunch.
Continue the journey to the Lavender Farm, animals, treats and large gardens to explore
The Gladstone walk along Lake Hawea is an easy option for the kids and they can stop for a swim too!
Grab an ice cream from Hawea dairy or Black Peak Gelato
Cardrona
Explore a unique slice of the high country up the Cardrona Valley on a horse trek, then stop at the historic Cardrona Hotel for a hot chocolate, coffee, beer or wine. In the afternoon chill out at the local pool or if they’re still feeling energetic, a trip to Basecamp Clip & Climb should sort that out!
Hawea - Makarora
Road trip day! Drive out to Makarora taking stops along the way to take in the scenery. The Blue Pools in Makarora is a perfect walk for the family. On the way back stop at Hawea for an ice cream.
