Before we begin, we would like to acknowledge the Noonga people, the traditional

The Vietnamese New Year more

popularly known around the world as

Tết Nguyên Đán. In short, Tết is

probably the only festival that best

portrays Vietnam’s rich, colourful culture

and long history.

Tet is a time for family reunion, paying

homage to ancestors, harmony

reinforcement and exchange of best

wishes.

All activities are undertaken with great

care to ensure that people will have

happiness, good fortune and good health

throughout the year.

Cây Nêu

A bamboo tree (New Year's Tree) stripped of its leaves except for a tuft on top. Red paper decorates the tree which is planted outside the house during the Tet holidays. It is supposed to ward off the evil spirits .

Hoa Mai

Hoa Mai are popular in the south region of Vietnam because of the warm weather. Cay Mai is a small, yellow flowering plant that is used for decoration during Tết. It symbolises the prosperity and well-being for the family.

The Fruits

Coconuts, papayas, mangoes, watermelons, pineapples, bananas, oranges, Asian apples, grapefruits are the favourites fruits during this special holiday season. They are usually placed on altars first for the gods and ancestors. After these gods and ancestors spiritually consuming the fruits, humans are then allowed to eat them. These fruits symbolize good fortune, and the colours of red and orange represents joyfulness.

Fire Crackers

Besides the cheerful sound to welcome and celebrate Tết Season, many people believe that fire crackers are also used to scare the unholy spirits away.

Bánh Chưng

Banh Chung or sticky rice is served particularly during the Tet

Festival, which occurs during the first three days of the first

month of the lunar calendar. It is a square cake, wrapped in

banana leaves and tied with lacings of flexible slivers. It is a very

rich food for the interior contains a filling of mung bean paste to

which may be added small bits of pork meat, both fat and lean.

This filling, which is amply seasoned, is pressed between layers

of glutinous rice.

Banh Chung’s square shape is considered a symbol of the

thankfulness of the Vietnamese people for the great abundance

of the Earth, which has supplied them with nutritious food

throughout the four seasons of the year.

Lì Xì

In

Vietnam, li xi or red envelopes are usually distributed during the

Tet festive season and are believed to bring good luck to both

the giver and the recipeint. These are bestowed by older family

members to children, as well as in other relationships where one

person is considered senior. The red colour of the envelope

symbolises good luck and is supposed to ward off evil spirits.
