VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIRLS
Tunnel to Towers Foundation 5K - RochesterThe Tunnel to Towers Foundation honors first responders and military personnel through various initiatives, one being the 5K Run/Walk series. The Tunnel to Towers Rochester 5K Run & Walk will be held on September 9, 2017, at Durand Eastman Park Beach, Lakeshore Blvd., Irondequoit at 9am. Girls Scout volunteers would serve as our Team 343, a tribute to the 343 Firefighters who lost their lives helping others on September 9, 2001, at the World Trade Center, by standing on the sideline of the race route and cheering on the participants. Each Scout will be given an American flag and poster which will have a FDNY Firefighter displayed on it to wear during the event. This service will earn the scout volunteer a specialized patch designed specifically for this event. Volunteer opportunity open to girls of all ages. If you're interested please contact Michele Walsh Myers at (585) 354-7708 or through email at [email protected].
Blood Drive Coordination – Livington CountyThe American Red Cross is looking for Girl Scouts in Livingston counties to host blood drives, specifically during the critical months of the year, August, October and December. This would work best with children ages 12 and up. (Please email about opportunities for younger scouts.)
Duties would include the following:
• Finding a space in the community that is approximately 1,000 square feet to use for the blood drive
• Working with the Red Cross to come up with recruitment strategies to get donors to the drive. This usually includes reaching out to parents and community members and signing them up to donate and typically works best if each child is given a specific goal to achieve. Additional tabling may be done at supermarkets, churches, community venues, etc. as a group
• The day of the drive, we would need several volunteers to sit at a table signing people in and to hand out snacks and drinks after people donate. (Red Cross provides the snacks and drinks)
If you are interested, contact Holly Fey at [email protected] or 585-261-1700.

NYS Centennial of Women's Suffrage Girl Scout Patch ProgramNovember 2017 marks the 100-year anniversary of women gaining the right to vote in New York State —three years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment granted women nationwide the right to vote. The US Suffrage Movement began in New York State and by completing this patch program you will become more aware of that movement and the women who have shaped history throughout time.

Core Camp (Look for Core camp programs in the 2017 core camp catalog.) Troop leaders: if you are looking for a great troop camp experience to do with your girls don’t forget about Core Camping at Camp Timbercrest! As we all know, troop camping is a great way for leaders and their girls to experience the wonders and excitement of the outdoors. At GSWNY we want to provide as many opportunities as possible for leaders and girls to experience the great outdoors. Core Camp can provide that experience.
Need a camp catalog? Download your copy by clicking here or call our office at 1-888-837-6410 to request a catalog.
Core Camp is the perfect setting for leaders who want to take their girls troop camping without the responsibility of providing program, meals or having trained/certified adults. At Camp Timbercrest we will do it all for you. All troop leaders have to do is provide the necessary child to adult supervision ratio. You and your girls can participate in as much or as little programming as you choose. Look for dates and programs themes in the Core Camp catalog. For more information on Core Camp please contact Janet DePetrillo, Director of Outdoor Program. Here is what our leaders had to say about their first time core camping experience:
“My girls loved it and can’t wait to go back.” “It’s great for all and a super great chance for the girls to see what camp is like.” “I thought it was amazing, much better than the over-the-weekend troop camping you used to offer.” “We had a wonderful time! I’d go again in a heartbeat. My girls loved it and loved the counselors who made everything so much fun.”
Attention all troop leaders: Our new GSWNY Camp Property patch program and patches are now available for you to purchase. If your troop goes camping on one our GSWNY camp properties, simply complete the Camp Property Patch program form (CLICK HERE) by completing two activities listed (one being a service project) and bring your signed Camp Property Patch form into any one of our Girl Scout council shops to purchase your property patch. It is that simple.
If you have questions on our new Council Property Patch program please contact customer care at 1-888-837-6410.
