Storm assistance at Cedar Creek Park Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, in partnership with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, has announced that the New York State Department of Financial Services will be available at Cedar Creek Park daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. to offer residents advice on how to file an insurance claim for property damage from Hurricane Sandy. Representatives will also be present from several of the nation’s largest insur- ance companies, including: Allstate, MetLife, New York Life, Travelers and USAA. In addition, County Executive Mangano suggested the following meas- ures for Nassau County residents with property damage: • The first step to getting your home restored is to contact your insurance com- pany and/or agent with your policy num- ber and other relevant information. Be aware that your policy might require that you make this notification within a cer- tain time frame. • Take photographs or video of the damage before clean-up or repairs. After you've documented the damage, make repairs necessary to prevent further dam- age to your property, such as covering broken windows, leaking roofs and dam- aged walls. Do not have permanent repairs made until your insurance compa- ny has inspected the property and you have reached an agreement on the cost of repairs. Be prepared to provide the claims adjuster with records of any improve- ments you made prior to the damage. Save all receipts, including those from the temporary repairs. • If your home is damaged to the extent that you cannot live there, ask your insur- ance company or insurance agent if you have coverage for additional living expenses. • Ask what documents, forms and data you will need to file the claim. Keep a diary of all conversations you have with the insurance company and your insur- ance agent, including names, times and dates of the calls or visits and contact details. • Be certain to give your insurance company all the information it needs. Incorrect or incomplete information may cause a delay in processing your claim. • If the first offer made by the insurance company does not meet your expecta- tions, be prepared to negotiate. If there is a disagreement about the claim, ask the company for the specific language in the policy in question and determine why you and the company interpret your policy differently. If you believe you are being treated unfairly, contact the New York State Department of Financial Services at 1-800-339-1759. • Consumers should contact their insur- ance company, agent or broker to get answers to specific questions about their policies. Consumers who need further help should feel free to contact the New York State Department of Financial Services at 1-800-339-1759. • Residents seeking emergency assis- tance should call the FEMA Disaster Assistance hotline at 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362) to register or the Nassau County Non-Emergency Hotline at 1-888-684-4274. Hindsight is 20/20Hurricane Sandy left several post offices besides Long

Beach without power, among them Wantagh and Merrick.Wantagh managed to borrow a generator. Here, at yourcommunity newspaper, we suffered along with others withreduced mail delivery because the carriers in Merrick, where our office is located, could not sort in the dark. Theywere only able to deliver mail sorted at the central plant forseveral days. But they made Herculean efforts to get ourpre-election guide out before the vote.

Like many, we were amazed the post offices were notgiven priority by LIPA in getting their power back on. Formany homes and businesses, the mail is a lifeline. Andmany an elderly person has been saved by a carrier whonotified the fire department after noticing the mail in thebox had started to pile up. These are the same postal carri-ers who collect nonperishable food for the needy every year.

How many times did we hear this during the crisis?“Robocalls don’t work if people don’t have phone service.”“We have no one to walk door-to-door to check on the safe-ty of residents and alert them of safety issues.” Really? What about the postal carriers? They do it every day, ingood and bad weather, scrambling over fallen trees andsloshing through water. While the federal governmentdeliberates on what to do about the postal service, thisshould be an important consideration, the door-to-doorservice is a vital resource already in place.

Several postal employees were unable to do their jobsbecause of flooding of their own homes and have used uptheir vacation and sick leaves. We hope union members willconsider donating some of their unused vacation time tothem now in hopes that someone else will do the same forthem if they are ever in the same boat.

Small Business SaturdayThe day after Black Friday is Small Business Saturday.

We urge our readers to honor its spirit by shopping locallyfor their holiday needs. Local businesses opened their doorsto us for cellphone charging, hot coffee and restroom use. They donated food, clothing and supplies to storm victims. They have been there for us, and we should be there forthem.

Be creative! It can be a challenge to find something localfor everyone on your list. But it will also bring a feel-goodsensation that is the essence of the holidays.

,HALLOWEEN FITNESS AND FUN: With its first annual ”Freaky 5K” race, The John TheissenChildren’s Foundation welcomed more than 800 runners to a pre-Halloween 5K dash through thestreets of Wantagh. At the finish line, Wantagh’s Yustat family, from left, Peter, Wyatt and Erin, was greetedby Wantagh chiropractor Dr. Barbara Rosinsky, D.C., offering much appreciated post-race adjust-ment to finishers with aches and pains. All ”Freaky 5K” proceeds went to the John TheissenChildren’s Organization, now in its 21st year of bringing support and smiles to Long Island’sphysically ill and underpriviledged children.

Kudos to Numa’s FloristTo The Citizen:

On August 28, my brother-in-law, JamesQuinn, died on his 47th WeddingAnniversary from injuries he sustainedwhile piloting a small plane on his way toa business trip on August 15 in CliftonPark, New York.

When it came time for the wake, I keptthinking about what I should do to honormy brother-in-law. My sister, ElaineReisert Quinn, and her family hadarranged a three-hour wake in the Albanyarea where they live.

Being that Jim was such a well knownbusinessman and I felt that there would bemany floral arrangements, a short wakeand he was being cremated, I thought itwould not make sense to send flowers.

My mind then went back to the manytimes I have passed Numa’s Florist inWantagh and admired the beautiful statuesthey now sell. I thought about what I feltwould be an appropriate tribute to mybrother-in-law and also what would bemeaningful to my sister and her family anddecided since he loved to fly, an eagle

would be appropriate. I went to see MiguelHernandez in Numa’s Florist and he was sohelpful. Although he didn’t have an eagle instock, he brought the catalog out andhelped me pick out a beautiful eagle in thefinish I liked.

Although flowers seem to be what mostpeople send to a wake, I thought peoplemay want an alternative suggestion thatcan honor the deceased person’s life andbe something that can be passed on tofuture generations.

Numa’s Florist can order the beautifulMassarelli’s statues which come in somany styles and finishes. Each statue ismade and finished by hand and can be usedindoor and outdoor. They are a nice gift foryourself or someone else.

Miguel Hernandez, the owner of Numa’sFlorist’s in Wantagh, is one of the most sin-cere, thoughtful and caring businessmen Ihave ever dealt with, and he always goesout of his way to help you. He is alsoinvolved in so many community and chari-table concerns. It is a pleasure to do busi-ness with him and his other employees.

The eighth-grade girls soccer team atSalk Middle School in the LevittownSchool District raised over $1,000 fortuberous sclerosis research and support. The team was motivated to raise thesefunds through their friendship with 10-year-old Levittown resident Ally Spear, who was diagnosed with this geneticdisorder.

Dressed in tuberous sclerosis aware-ness T-shirts, Ally and her parents

attended the Seahawks’ October 18game against Merrick. The team credit-ed their 2-0 victory to Ally’s positivespirit and inspiration.

Tuberous sclerosis is a group of twogenetic disorders that affect the skin, brain, nervous system, kidneys andheart and cause noncancerous tumors togrow. The diseases are named after a“tuber,” or root-shaped growth thatoften appears in the patient’s brain.

We honor all North Shore-LIJ physicians, nurses, emergency medical service technicians andparamedics, allied health, administrative, and support staff.

Your devotion to keeping patients safe during the worst of Hurricane Sandy is a testament to yourcommitment, and a reflection of your dedication to the communities we serve. Although many of youwere personally affected by the storm, you continued to work and care for others during one of themost devastating hurricanes in decades.

Our gratitude to you is immeasurable. Our pride in you is great. You are what makes North Shore-LIJone of the best.

WANTAGH WEATHERS THE STORM: The Wantagh community was hit hard byHurricane Sandy, but through it all there was an outpouring of care and con-cern from those wishing to help. Families that had power or generatorsopened their homes to those without. Students and parents collected dona-tions of clothes, food and sundries and distributed them to families who lostso much. Wantagh High School became a cozy haven over the weekend as aplace to recharge, warm up and reconnect. The Wantagh schools are up andrunning and were spared any damage. Attendance at the schools remains ashigh as usual. As our community continues to recover, the resilience ofWantagh will prevail thanks in part to the generous spirit of its citizens.

family members. Companies and organ-izations may wish to support the walk-way with a customized brick displayingtheir name.

A brick on the Walk of Recognitionwill be a highly visible and permanenttestimony of loyalty to MacArthur HighSchool.

Salk Middle School is mixed upDuring lunch, students at Salk

Middle School in the Levittown SchoolDistrict left their comfort zones andsocialized with unfamiliar peers duringMix It Up at Lunch Day.

Students nationwide have identifiedthe cafeteria as a place where socialdivisions are most clearly drawn. Mix ItUp at Lunch Day encourages studentsto identify, question and cross socialboundaries and connect with a newfriend over lunch.

Guidance chair and Mix It Up advisorMaura O’Sullivan explained that manystudents never take the time to intro-duce themselves to others who eat at thesame table and are most likely toremain within their own social circle.“This activity is designed to take stu-dents out of their comfort zones and

have them meet other students,” shestated.

During Mix It Up at Lunch Day, stu-dents were assigned to tables accordingto their birth months. They were eachgiven an interview sheet and encour-aged to talk to their new friends abouttheir likes and dislikes, interests andactivities. Each student was thenprompted to write a sentence about theirnew friend on a poster board.

Sixth-graders Olivia Quitone andRuby Hogan explained that they hadmet before, but had never really becomeacquainted. The girls were pleasantlysurprised to find out that they had a lotof common interests. “Olivia has abrother and participates in sports likeme,” Ruby stated. “We will probablyhang out after school now.”
