Renee BurkeJournalism AdviserWilliam R. Boone High School2000 S. Mills Ave.Orlando, FL 32806
Dear Mrs. Burke,
The Legend yearbook is seeking a student to fulfill the position of Co-Editor-in-Chief. This position for which I am applying, requires a leader dedicated to continuing the excellence of the publication. Please accept the accompanying resumé for your review and consideration for the position of Co-Editor-in-Chief.
My first year on the Legend staff has developed my love for journalism. I have always been interested in the media, but it was not until I took Journalism I at Boone High School last year that I realized journalism was my passion. I have had leadership positions in the past, such as the president of the National Junior Honor Society at Blankner School (09-10), developing my leadership skills, which would be conducive to continuing the achievements of this publication.
I understand this position requires the knowledge and ability of skills including the extensive use of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. Through Journalism I and my first year on yearbook staff, I learned to use those programs to create and work on pages in a successful manner. With my experience as a staffer, I effectively worked with many different types of people, I worked under demanding deadlines, and I successful balanced my schoolwork with my involvement in this publication. I believe these skills are needed to be the Co-Editor-in-Chief of this publication.
Although the accompanying resumé represents my experience well, I feel a personal interview would further demonstrate my knowledge and abilities. Therefore, I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you. Thank you for reviewing my qualifications and for consideration me this position. I look forward to talking to you soon.
Respectfully yours,
Blake Waranch

When I started
journalism in J1 last year, I had no idea how much I would fall in love
with it. Even after one year, it has made such an
impact on my life and has honestly made me a better person.
When we were choosing electives in eighth grade, I
knew I needed three but only had two that I wanted or had to do. The third was still free. Since
I was Mr. Burke’s student assistant, he asked me about what classes I signed up for and asked if I had considered taking journalism. I said that I hadn’t but that I would be
open to it. He said that he could talk to his wife, who taught journalism, to make sure I was in the class. I never had any
regrets in the decision to take Journalism. Once I started J1, I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but I knew I loved
it. I really enjoyed J1, so to succeed in getting on yearbook, I knew I just had to really work hard throughout the
year, but that wasn’t difficult because I already loved it so much. I have contributed my skills in the Adobe
programs, positive attitude, leadership skills, and helpful and outgoing personality to journalism. My plans
regarding journalism include being the Editor-in-Chief of the 2013 Legend yearbook
and creating an amazing book as co-EIC with Kayla next year.

I have
learned so much throughout the course
of the year. I have learned to better manage my time and meet deadlines. I
learned, especially in Deadline 3, the core
classes page, that the best method for me, is to get interviews done
first before pictures, even though pictures are due first. Once you get interviews,
you can write stories and then take pictures at the events after school. That, I think, is the best way to manage your
time on a regular deadline, which I have learned this year. I also became more efficient with my skills with the Adobe programs,
just because of how much I used them throughout the year. Before I started yearbook, I had a lot of trouble with group work mainly because other group members would not do their work and I took on all the workload, which led me to hate working in groups, but after being in yearbook for a year and being forced to work in groups or with partners, I got a lot more comfortable with group work and that learned that when someone isn’t doing
their work, it’s better to figure out why they aren’t doing their work to try to help them than to get frustrated and take all the work for themselves. I also learned that one of the best qualities you need as a saleswoman trying to
sell ads is to just ask. Obviously, you should ask in a profession manner and just be able to take no as an answer and move on. Selling ads was just very difficult for me and if I had learned that earlier, I would have been more successful
and timely with my ads sales. I have learned even more over the course of the year about
dedication. Dedication is probably the number one desired aspect of a successful staff. You can think you’re a terrible writer or photographer, but if you
are dedicated, you can learn a lot about how to better that time and the next time. In Deadline 3, I asked for
some help on beginning my core classes story. Caroline was not busy at the time and offered her help. The bell
rang and she said she would continue to look at it until the workday. Well, when I came in after school, she had already
written the story. Even though I really enjoyed her story, I knew that I could not call it my own since I
had nothing to do with it, so I sat down and wrote a story I was proud of. That really taught me
that even though I was not confident in my writing ability on that particular story, I was dedicated enough to sit for hours until I finished the story and ended up being happy with it.

Deadline 4, the Publications page, was my best work this year. I felt it was my best work because I love the pictures I chose to put on this page, especially the one of Allie, and I think it
really gives a good look into the staffs and publications. This was the page that I feel I learned the least from, though, because it was so easy to complete. The page just fell together and there were no problems or obstacles to finish this page. The first draft is not much different from the final draft. I took this page when I got to pick first and because of that, it was my least stressful deadline. When getting interviews, I didn’t have to worry about not being able to get their interview in time because everyone I interviewed was right in that room. Even though I don’t have a photo credit on this page, I still really enjoy all the
pictures on this page. Captions were easier to write than captions on other pages because either I was actually at the event, participating, or my good friends were the ones explaining it to me, so I think my words got the idea across better. I really like the secondary coverage as well. The page really gives a glimpse into the staff to people who aren’t in staff.

This was the first deadline I ever did by myself. I think I learned the most from this than any other deadline throughout the entire year. In this deadline, I learned through
some trial and error how to best get things done. The actual first draft was never printed out, but it was a very difficult layout to work with for the homecoming dance page. Carly,
Brooke and I went back and forth about what we thought would be best for the dominant photo. I remember it switching from horizontal to vertical and back and forth many times. Because of
the confusion with the dominant photo, I was not able to move on early on for photos. This was also my first time shooting in a dark environment and from that experience, got more comfortable with
a camera and the more specific settings. The writing was probably what I would improve upon if I had the chance because the story was what I struggled with most. There was a lot of information that Brooke
and I both agreed to be in the story, but there wasn’t enough space to fit everything into it and have it flow, so Brooke helped me rework the story into one that flowed and included the information we wanted.
I still think the story could use work, making it a better-written story with more creativity and make it more interesting. Overall, I like the way the page looks, especially after seeing it printed. If I could go back,
I would take pictures that had less dark background so that the page didn’t look so dark as a whole. I would also work on the story to make it more concise and succinct.

I like this picture because it was the first time I actually got the chance to shoot in a dark environment. It was also a very awkward
environment because you are jumping in the middle of a random group of people to try and get the best photos that show the most
action or emotion. It took me a few minutes to feel more comfortable but then I was changing angles and felt a lot better about taking
photos. For this photo, I was standing on the stage and love the emotion on her face. I like how you can tell she is the subject even though there is still a lot going on in the photo. There are leading lines and rule of thrids in this photo as well. The leading lines of the arms, also frame her face, using the bent elbow behind her head and her own elbow.

This photo was also another time that I took photos in low lighting. I really enjoyed taking photos at Brave Aid and feel this was my
best from that event. I love the emotion on his face and how you can tell he’s in the zone. It also shows how comfortable he is on stage
and beat boxing. Though the lighting is not great, I don’t think, it gives a different modd to the picture than many of the other Brave Aid pictures. I like the angle of this picture, and though I would have liked to be closer to the stage, I do like that his whole body is in this picture and
how there is a little bit of asymetrical balance.

I did not get many chances to take a lot of sports photos this year, but this was my favorite sporting event to shoot because we were
able to be inside the fence for the event and I felt that I got a lot of good photos from this event, but I like this particular picture more
because of the depth of field and how you can see the action of her swinging the bat, even though she is still clear. I also like the leading lines in this photo of her legs, bat, and the poles in the fence behind her. Her face also shows emotions of determination and you can see how
intense and focused she is through her facial expression.

I was an asset to the staff by having a positive attitude, helping others, and having dedication. I
think my positive attitude showed throughout everything I did throughout the year. Even
when I was having trouble finding photos or beginning a story, I continued to keep a
positive attitude. I tried to keep others in a positive mood as well. I noticed that, even
though we have a lot of fun at workdays, when we sit down and work for hours at a time, it can make you stressed, even if you are getting a lot
done, so I tried to get my positive attitude to rub off on others, at that time especially. Being a newbie was
probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my life, and learning time management in school and learning time management
in yearbook are two totally different things, but I always tried to help others when they needed it. I know, especially in the beginning of the year, I tried very hard to just focus on getting my work done as fast as possible and be done with it, but as I got more comfortable with
the other staffers and editors, I began to put my work off slowly to help others. I still would get it done, but not as fast. I know when Channa needed a lot of help, getting interviews and quotes, I
had things I could have done, but I just saw how stressed she was and put my work off to help her. In the long run, that could be very bad, but I think I knew when I just had too much
to do to help others. My dedication to yearbook has grown immensely over the past year. At that first day with the whole staff the week before school, I knew that I was
going to love it. I consistently stayed after school on many deadlines to get ahead on interviews and placing pictures and writing captions and stories. I stayed
organized because of my dedication. I didn’t want to lose anything or have bad communication, so I stayed organized. Having dedication
makes the staff work better together, as well.

A problem/hardship that I faced this year was working in groups. Before yearbook, I never liked
working in groups. I have also grown up, never liking to ask for help. These combined made it hard for me in the beginning of the year. In Deadline 1, when I
was partnered with Jacob, I had a hard time because he wanted to work in a different way, I wanted things done in a certain way, and I felt Jacob’s way was less efficient. Deadline 5, when I
was partnered with Olivia, I learned to divide up the work and to trust that others will get things done when everyone agrees what they are doing. I have actually learned to like group work because of
the way you can bounce ideas off one another and come up with an even better idea. I have also learned that it’s not only okay, but encouraged, to ask for help when you need it. If I were ever in a situation
where I needed help, I would just ask. And I look forward to group work now. I handled the situations well. I learned quickly what I needed to do to make the situation work.

At mid-term, I wrote that my greatest weakness was my
confidence. I now know that wasn’t the right word to describe it. My true
greatest weakness was that I second-guessed myself. I was afraid to speak up and voice ideas and opinions in large groups. I was also
afraid that my page, especially writing, wasn’t good enough to go to an editor so I held onto
things for longer than I should have which led to a more stressed deadline for me, but I think after I was asked what my greatest weakness was and I could then identify it, I quickly figured out what I needed to change to make sure it wasn’t a weakness anymore. After mid-term, I realized what I was doing and what I could do differently to change it. I started just writing things and turning them in so that even if I wasn’t
happy with it but couldn’t figure out how to make it better, just to turn it in and maybe a new set of eyes could help me. This worked and I made deadline much faster after this. I realized that nothing I did could ever be completely perfect and to just strive for it, but know that I just needed to make it the best I could, and that is what I did. I started turning things in faster and changing things faster and then met deadline faster with a page that I was very happy with.

At the staff pumpkin carving party, yearbook Editor-In-Chief Allison Sloan concentrates on her pumpkin design. “There are so many [staff events] but workdays [are my favorite] because we show we’re really a family,” Sloan, senior, said. After school, senior Christie Rieck promotes yearbook sales in the student parking lot wearing a banana suit. “[It] was the most embarrassing thing I’ve done but it was worth every second because I got people to understand what the yearbook really means,” Rieck said.
THROUGH THE YEARS:

ultimate. While playing Ultimate Frisbee as a reward for making newspaper deadline early, senior Mark Vagelakos looks for an open teammate. “Ultimate [Frisbee] is always a ton of fun, especially because we haven’t made deadline early this year. It made me proud of myself and the staff,” Vagelakos said.
edit. Newspaper Editor-In-Chief Karen Jaen grades and edits a staffer’s article in class. “I can relate to [the new staffers] because I [joined staff ] as a freshman without taking journalism,” Jaen, senior, said. Along with seniors Allison Sloan and Louis Patrick, Jaen is one of the remaining four-year staffers in the publications program.
Every day, 55 students crossed the threshold of Room 224 and traded in the stress of calculus and physics for an entirely different kind of stress: publications stress.
“Sometimes, actually a lot of times, the work piles up and I want to run away to California and be a beach bum, but making my mark on a lasting piece of Boone history is such a privilege and opportunity. I could never not give 100 percent,” yearbook sports editor Caroline Coleman, senior, said.
Room 224 is home to the Legend yearbook staff, Hi-Lights newspaper staff and Mass Media, which ran hilights.org, the online newspaper. With a classroom constantly filled with deadlines, stress and tension built up, students still found time to get to know each other and to build lasting friendships in and out of the classroom.
“The relationships [between staffs] are awesome. In Room 224, we are all ourselves 100 percent of the time,” senior yearbook staffer Holly Smith said.
Though the individual staffs spent time within their own publication and developed enduring bonds, each staff worked together and made relationships with each other.
“I was afraid that when we lost our seniors [from 2010-2011] we’d be really cliquey, but going to [Camp Orlando: A
see all of its history, “ sophomore Olivia Quattrone said.
Journalism Jumpstart] really helped because all the barriers broke there and [now] we’re just a family,” newspaper staffer Cooper Brock, junior, said.
These strong relationships brought staffers together during stressful situations. When yearbook sales were down 200 books the week before final orders were due to the publisher on Jan. 16, the publications came together and publicized the yearbook. Members of each staff posted on Facebook and Twitter, contacted other students through text messaging and commited time to hand out flyers.
Because of the staffs’ ability to work together, yearbook reached its goal of selling over 1,000 books, including online sales and payment plans.
“[The staffs work together] because they are trying to do the same thing: creating memories, so we have a common ground,” Smith said.
Hi-Lights kept students updated on current events; hilights.org provided extra information, photos and videos; and Legend documented memories throughout the year that were frozen in time for years to come.
“In the end, publications isn’t really about the production skills or the deadlines; it’s about the experience,” Brock said.

third The beginning of school had a buzz to it; new students, new staff, new changes,
and a new Employee of the Year. This award recognized an exceptional employee of the school. Ileana Quinones was the 2011-12 recipient.
While assisting in student services, Quinones gave the students, parents and staff undivided attention. From setting up appointments for students with their guidance counselors, to talking to parents about school information, she was there to give each individual that came into student services her time.
“[I have] the readiness to take on certain projects and responsibilities,” Quinones said.
Quinones had previously been nominated twice for her contributions to the school. She demonstrated her ability to handle assigned projects and tasks, and the responsibilities that accompanied them.
Accompanying the prestigious award, Quinones recieved a goodie bag that included gift cards to Papa Johns, Carrabba’s, Tony Roma’s and Planet Smoothie.
“[I felt] very humbled and touched by the acknowledgement,” Quinones said.[jacob ballard]
With tears streaming down her face and the administration surrounding her in her classroom, Kelly Morales was overjoyed with the acknowledgement of Teacher of the Year.
“I was so honored because I’ve been on the list before, but when I saw the list of those other great teachers, I wasn’t sure I would get it,” Morales said.
Even though Morales was surprised to receive the award, she was aware that the other teachers knew about her contribution to the school and community, as well as her role with Key Club.
“They hear about all the great things [Key Club] does and they know it’s me, but in my department, new teachers are sent to me for activities and to learn to work the computers,” Morales said. “I [also] have the willingness to help the kids.”
As Teacher of the Year, Morales had a responsibility to represent the school on a much higher level rather than other staff members.
“It’s scary because it puts you out there, everyone looks at you now. When people look at you they think ‘Boone.’ I want people to be proud of Boone,” Morales said. “I never want to go somewhere else now that I’m here.”
[blake waranch]
