Army Special Rules“Bretonnia is fair and peaceful because everyone knows their place. Yours is with the truffle hounds.”

Tuffle HoundBretonnian truffles grow underground, on or neat tree-roots, andleave no obvious sign at the surface. Finding them would beimpossible, were it not for the uncanny sensed of the maleBretonnian Truffle Hound. Located and picked truffle must bestored in alcohol, normally cheap brandy, so that the dogs can nolonger smell it, and all the tools that touched it must be washed inthe same liquid. If something smells of truffles, Truffle Houndsbecome extremely affectionate towards it and are very insistant inpressing their attentions. They don’t become dangerously violentunless they usually eat the fungus, however.

Some Lords like to smear criminals in truffle and throw them tothe Truffle Hounds. This is an embrassing punishment but rarelyfatal, unless the truffle is crushed onto the skin of the victim then itbecomes more serious.

Truffle Hounds are notoriously ugly dogs with faces that look asthough they have been dropped and put back together by anclumsy five-year old. Only peasants with a license from a noble areallowed to own them, and they must be kept under close control atall times to stop them running into the forest and eating all thetruffles.

The Lance FormationAs in Warhammer Armies: Bretonnia except forthe last paragraph in Forming the Lance.

A Damsel or a prophetess may be placed in the centre of thesecond rank of the Lance formation rather than the front rank, asthe knights form up protectively around her. Note that she remainsfully in play even if she is not in the front rank (so unit may use herLeadership, she may cast magic, etc.) If the second Damsel orProphetess joins the unit, she may be placed in the centre of thethird rank, and so on. If the rank in front of the Damsel orProphetess ever falls below three models, she will move forward totake up the empty space. A Damsel or Prophetess can use herunit’s line of sight for the purpose of casting her spells thatrequire her to do so.

Vows of BretonniaAs in Warhammer Armies: Bretonnia except forthe following changes:

The Knight’s VowKnights with the Knight’s Vow may ignore paniccaused by all units without the Knight’s Vow,Questing Vow and Grail Vow.

The Questing VowKnights with the Questing Vow may ignore paniccaused by all units without the Knight’s Vow,Questing Vow and Grail Vow, may re-roll any failedPsychology tests, and may not be joined by characterswith the Knights vow.

Characters with the Questing Vow cannot use amundane or magical lance. They will however ignorethe “Always strike last” rule of their great weaponsand therefore strike in imitative order as they wouldwith a normal hand weapon.

Armoury of BretonniaBirth SwordAll male nobles are presented with a fine sword at their birth:it is supposed to be the first thing they grasp. This sword is thenhung above the boy’s bed until he is old enough to train with it.From that point, it rests on a rack beside his bed whilst hesleeps. Most Bretonnian refuse to fight with any other weaponand do indeed seem to do better whilst holding it.

Hand Weapon. In addition, all Bretonnian Knights have aBirth Sword instead of a normal hand weapon, exceptwhen they wield a magic weapon. The bearer of a BirthSword can add a +1 bonus to their Leadership whentesting for Fear, Terror and Panic.

Bretonnian PlateThe Bretonnian Plate is not full plate armour like theEmpire’s version, but it is said to contain the seal of the ladyoften referred to the Lady’s Mantle.

The Bretonnian Plate confers a 4+ armour save, whichcan be combined with other equipment as normal.

Any undead unit in base contact with the bearer ofthis blade becomes completely immune to Necromantic,Vampiric spells and Invocations from the Tomb KingsArmy Book. This is not a dispel of any kind, the spells justwon’t affect them. In addition, Undead gains no armoursave vs. the Sword of the Western Tower.

Birth Sword of Carcassonne 35 ptsAt Birth, all noble sons in the Dukedom of Carcassonne are made totouch a specially forged blade, and this weapon hangs above their cotsuntil they reach an age when they can wield it. This mirrors the storyof the original duke, Lambard, who was said to have grasped a swordeven before suckling at his mother’s bosom.

Sir Amalric of GaudaronThe Blessed Champion, Bringer of Light, Beacon of Hope, Lichmaster’s End

160 points

Sir Amalric counts as a Hero character and may be your armyGeneral.

f all the Grail Knights in the service of Bretonnia, few are sofamed as Sir Amalric of Gaudaron Keep, scourge championof the Lady of the Lake. As a young knight, Amalric passed

his early years in the service of Baron Prithard of Carcassonne, onewarrior amongst many in the Baron’s service. Prithard, whilst anoble and just lord, needed the support of worthy knights if hewere to defend his domains, for though well schooled in thecourtly arts, the skills of diplomacy forever eluded him. As such,he often found himself at odds with his peers and could rely onlittle support from them. Though young, Amalric swiftly proved tohave great skills at arms, and he was soon confirmed as a fullKnight of the Realm and appointed master of Gaudaron Keep, anold but serviceable castle on the foothills of the Vaults.

It was shortly after the young knight was installed in his domainsthat the accursed liche, Hardakh, rose from his crypt deep withinthe Vaults, and led an army of the mouldering corpses into thesouthern Carcassonne territories. Amalric was one of many boldknights who met with Hardakh upon the field of battle. It seemedthat the blessing of the Lady flowed through Amalric withunprecedented vigour, for the undead warriors could not standbefore him. Wherever Amalric rode, the Necromancer’s evilmagics seemed to ebb and fade. Skeletal warriors collapsed intodust and spectral hosts dispersed in the wind at his coming. Eventhe Vampiric echoes of Sir Morten the Black, scourge upon thelands about Gaudaron for the some two hundred years, aged anddied even as he offered challenge to Amalric. With his armycrumbling about him and the men of Bretonnia emboldened,Hardakh had no choice but to retreat from the battle, thoughwithin a league, his undead form suffered a short but pointedencounter with Baron Prithard’s favourite Hippogryph, Dagonet.Recognising the instrumental role that Amalric had played in thevictory, the Baron offered him rank and great wealth. Such areward would have brought a new age of comfort on Amalric’simpoverished family yet, spurred on by visions and faith, theyoung knight chose instead to commit himself to the path of thelady.

To this day, ballads are still sung of the Quest of Sir Amalric –largely on the insistence of his family, who benefited greatly fromhis fame. Though some of the claims made of Amalric’s travailsare mythical – he did not engage in a game of riddles with one ofthe Fay folk – or embellished the Chaos Champion Karnak hadmere three heads, not five – he preformed many great deeds. Onthe slopes of the Grey Mountains, Amalric beheaded the ferociousBeastlord Shadeflench and scattered his followers. It was Amalricwho single-handedly defended the Tower Perilous from Goblinraiders, and he who twice defeated and slew the Barrow King,Bracht the Eternal. Ultimately, with the blessing of the Lady as hisguide and companion, Amalric’s quest was a successful one. Onthe banks of the Brienne, Amalric supped from the Grail and trulybecame the chosen of the Lady of the Lake. Little was he to knowthat the greatest trial of his life was yet to await him, for shortlyafter; the Lady bade him ride deep into the fey and dangerousforest of Athel Loren where he would confront one of the mostpowerful Necromancers to every walk the Old World.

Chaos raiders spread out across the land burning and destroying.Everywhere Knights were hacked down as they bravely defiedimpossible odds. At this dark moment, amid the smoking ruins ofa small village in remote Lyonesse, Repanse saw the Lady of theLake. The Lady appeared to speak saying “Repanse rid my land ofthese foul foes, for they offend me with their presence!”

Repanse was no more than seventeen years of age, a humbleshepherdess who was devoutly religious. Inspired by her vision shedonned armour that she found on a slain Knight and grabbed thereins of a terrified warhorse which was running loose. She brokeopen the reliquary of the village grail chapel and took up the swordshe found within it. Snatching a tapestry hung on the wall shefastened it to a lance and rode forth to rally the scattered anddisheartened Knights of Lyonesse.

When the retreating Knights saw a mere damsel bravely setting offto do battle with the mighty warriors of Chaos, and one who wasundoubtedly favoured by the Lady of the Lake, they were shamedand felt honour bound to follow her to death or glory! While theramparts of Couronne were cracking under the impact of thebattering rams of the Chaos Lord, word was brought of a newBretonnian army approaching fast and trampling beneath theirhooves and foe in their path.

As the great doors were about to give way the banner of thedreaded Demoiselle appeared leading a great host of Knightsarrayed in a single lancehead formation. They cleft their waythrough the Chaos ranks shattering the Chaos army until Repansewas face to face with the Chaos Lord himself. When he raised hisgreat sword above his grimacing visage he was momentarilydazzled by Repanse’s radiant aura, and she beheaded him with asingle sword stroke.

Duke Bohemond of BastonneThe Beastslayer, Guardian of the Humble Chapel, Purifier of the Black Chasm

280 points

Behemond counts as a lord character and may be your army General.

ohemond of Bastonne is the duke of the vast domain ofBastonne in the heartland of Bretonnia. This dukedom isperhaps the oldest in the realm and the Duke is traditionally

one of the King’s most important nobles. Bohemond fulfilled thegrail quest before succeeding to the dukedom, and the king himselfrequested him to accept the lordship of his ancestral lands ratherthan become a hermit knight in the grail chapel of Bastonne.

Duke Bohemond is renowned for fighting monsters, to the pointthat he is known as “the Beastslayer”. He is also famous forrefusing to fight inferior opponents; even if they attack him, hemerely stuns them so that he can turn his attention elsewhere. Ashis prowess has grown, the search for worthy foes has taken himto many places within Bretonnia and beyond.

Whilst Bohemond is a lineal descendant of Gilles le Breton, he isabsolutely loyal to King Louen and has no desire for the crown.Indeed, he delegates the whole business of administrating hisdukedom to his steward and justice to his justiciar. Alas, he is notvery good judge of character, and finds himself replacing thesemen with distressing frequency.

Bohemond’s vast estates are almost entirely rural. His castle ofBastonne is located on a high, craggy rock overlooking the forestof Châlons. From here Bohemond and his mighty retinue ofKnights wage constant war against the Orcs, Skaven and othervile creatures infesting the mountainous wilderness in the heart ofBretonnia.

Rise of the Black KnightA Bretonnia Campaign

The curse of Mousillon that lies upon the landrenders the duchy a grim, pestilent, and depressingplace. But it is no great malady compared to the cursethat lies upon its people. Mousillon’s nobility includessome of Bretonnia’s most wicked men and women, and several hard-bitten criminals have risen to thetop of Mousillon’s murderous underworld andacquired great notoriety among the thieves andcutthroats. These cruel, sinister villains are deadlyopponents for any band of hardy knights, and haltingtheir schemes requires strong sword arms and keeninstincts.

This is how it has been in Mousillon since beforeanyone can remember. But in recent times, a newthreat has arisen in the Lost Duchy, one even KingLouen Leoncoeur cannot ignore. Though still thesubject of rumour and counter-rumour, the truth isthat a claimant has arisen to the Dukedom ofMousillon – Mallobaude, the Black Knight – and heis forming an alliance of Mousillon’s nobles with theintention of gathering an army and defending hisclaim. This claim is a direct contravention of theroyal decree that Mousillon’s throne must remainempty and is hence an act of treason against the king. There is a very real possibility Mallobaude’s army willeventually face Bretonnian forces loyal to the king inbattle, and if the battle is fought in Mousillon itselfthen no one can say which side will emerge thevictor.

Mallobaude’s machinations are one of the gravestthreats facing Bretonnia. Mallobaude does not seeksomething as mundane as power or wealth, nor is hetrying to restore Mousillon to the glory of Landuin’sday. He is a driven man, convinced he aloneunderstands some terrible truth about Bretonnia, andhe has taken it upon himself to destroy Bretonnia’sruling order. Ruling Mousillon is just the first stage inthis plan. If he succeeds in taking and holding theDukedom of Mousillon, then Mallobaude will notstop until there is revolution in Bretonnia and theKnightly Order comes crashing down.

Mallobaude and his chief conspirators are some ofthe most dangerous men and women in Bretonnia, and the king would bestow riches and honour onwhoever could prove the identity of the Black Knightand those who have thrown their lot in with him.Once the king is certain of what is really happeningin Mousillon, he will probably launch a Crusade toreclaim the duchy for the Crown. This would be anevent of great tragedy, with the invading army besetby plague and peasantry subjected to even greaterdeprivation by the demand of both sides.
