Over the next few lessons we will be looking at a type of art called Pop art that was very popular in the 1950s and 1960s. One of the main artists of the Pop art movement was a man
called Andy Warhol.

This piece of art is by a famous
Pop artist called Roy Lichtenstein. He used comics as the basis for a lot of his artwork.

Pop art drew its inspiration from popular culture (which is where the name came from). Artists used advertisements, film stars,
comics and everyday objects in their artwork. Many established artists didn’t like Pop art because they thought these subjects were not worthy of being called art. The Pop artists wanted to
change people’s ideas about what art could be.

Pop art was a reflection of the consumer boom that happened after World War II. The 1950s and 1960s was a time when lots of
products were being mass-produced and adverts were encouraging people to buy lots more than they had been able to
buy during the war years.
Andy Warhol was born as Andrew Warhola to parents who had immigrated to America from
Slovakia. His mother was very artistic and gave him his first art lessons when he was sick in bed
at the age of eight.

This is Andy Warhol. He was born on 6th August 1928 in Philadelphia, USA. He began his career as a magazine and advertising illustrator. He went on to
become one of the most important artists in the Pop art movement.

Warhol started to become famous for his art in the early 1960s. He
bought a studio in New York which he called ‘The Factory’. It soon became a hot-spot for all
the wealthy and famous people of New York to have parties.
Warhol was very interested in the idea of celebrities. When asked
about it once he said that ‘more than anything people just want stars’.
