PRINCIPAL’S NEWS...

Welcome to Term 4, Week 8! The last week has been promising for some of our local families who were lucky enough to enjoy some modest falls of rain. Hopefully there is much, much more to follow.

It was lovely to host Tianna Sullivan last week as she completed a week of work experience at Warialda Public School. Tianna assisted across both Kindergarten classrooms and was a wonderful support to school staff . Great work, Tianna!

Last week, we hosted staff from Oz Tag NSW who visited our school to conduct skills clinics with our students. It was a pleasure to see our students having fun and trying a great sport. On the topic of sports, WPS has nominated our school to participate in several knockout competitions in 2020. These knockout teams are always open to students in Years 3 to 6, with students participating in trials from the start of the new school year. In 2020, we will be providing parents with a note outlining what is involved in participating in these competitions so that an informed decision can be made when deciding which and how many teams their children will trial for.

On Wednesday afternoon, we welcomed the Minister of Education – Mrs Sarah Mitchell and the Member for the Northern Tablelands – Mr Adam Marshall to WPS. It was a privilege to introduce these special guests to our students and staff . I know that our guests were extremely impressed with our school and spoke in glowing terms of their WPS experience.

This Thursday, we will extend a warm welcome to our North Rocks Public School friends who will be making the long journey to Warialda to take part in our annual twilight concert. On Friday morning, the NRPS crew will get a sneak preview of the twilight concert during the dress rehearsal before heading out to a local farm to experience country life. I’d encourage members of our school community to make sure you catch up with the North Rocks visitors on Friday evening at the concert, taking the opportunity to greet them and thank them for their amazing generosity.

Congratulations to Sam, Os, William, Clayton, Ellie, Mia, Ruby, Trinity, Lilly, Pyper and Bella who addressed their peers on Friday outlining the qualities that would make them a fantastic school leader in 2020. They each spoke with conviction and impressed everyone with their maturity and calmness. At our annual presentation ceremony on Friday the 13th of December, we shall announce the outcome of this process with three boys and three girls to be named as Captain, Vice-Captain and Prefect. Whilst I realise the remaining students will be disappointed, they can be proud of their eff orts and be confi dent in knowing that they were all the highest quality candidates.

It was an honour to host the annual Warialda Sports Council Awards at WPS on Friday. Mrs Clarissa Barwick (supported by Ruby Barwick) presented monthly winners and nominees with awards. It was a real highlight to also acknowledge the sub-junior boy and girl champion for 2019 being Os van Velthuizen and Indika Gallen. Os was also acknowledged as Warialda Sports Person of the Year. In addition, our extraordinary Rugby Union team claimed the title of Warialda Team of the Year. We sincerely appreciate Mrs Barwick’s eff orts in coordinating this event.

On a personal note, I observed a simple gesture following the Warialda Sports Councils awards that says a great deal about the outstanding qualities of our students at WPS. The 2019 school Vice-Captain – William Reardon worked his way through the crowd to shake hands with Os and congratulate him on winning the award of Sports Person of the Year. William’s total sincerity and ability to celebrate the success of others was such an impressive act and really sums up the school spirit consistently displayed at WPS.

There is so much happening this week with Year 6 attending Warialda High School tomorrow as part of their transition program. Also on Tuesday, our P&C will meet at 5pm in the Library. On Wednesday afternoon at 2:30pm, students who have been involved in either QuickSmart or the Speech Therapy Program will enjoy a graduation ceremony. Thursday will see Year 2 students commence Intensive Swimming for 2019 and of course on Friday, our annual Twilight Concert will entertain our community!

Have an amazing week!

Dan van Velthuizen - Principal

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN 3/4W...

What’s Happening in 3/4W?

In 3/4W we have been very busy preparing for both the Twilight Concert and our assembly item last week.

Our assembly item on making sure we stay safe online was lots of fun. We certainly have some budding rappers in our class!

In Literacy we have also been reading stories and watching some videos that feature ‘mad scientists’ and learning about characterisation.
