MIS EN SCENE

Lighting: The trailer uses mainly low key lighting, to create a dark and mysterious atmosphere. Light seems to be used as a symbol of ‘life’ in this trailer- as the brighter lighting is shown on characters that are alive. The lighting also gets lighter when he spends more time with the girl, showing how she is giving him purpose and life. The bright lighting behind the girl when she is taking her clothes off shows how he almost idolizes her and she is very special to him.

Costumes: the costumes used are very basic and casual, typical teenager clothing (as this will appeal to the target audience). Hoodies, t-shirts and jeans. They are dirty and scruffy to reflect the zombie theme. The red hoodie could be to connote the zombies thirst for blood and flesh and yet could also represent the love between the two characters, as red is a connotation of love. The white top underneath the red hoodie (which symbolizes danger), could be representing that he hasn’t an innocent side deep down.

Setting: The majority of the clips are set in a deserted airport, streets, warehouses (just mainly deserted, dark areas to portray the zombie genre).

Genre

The genre is established from the beginning osthe zombies are shown- suggesting a thriller/horror however a comedy element is introduced through the use of dry humor and jokes- and the change in music etc. This gives a sense of the film being less serious than the average horror or thriller- which is a unique selling point.

Camera work

Multiple close ups and mid shots of the zombies to highlight their facial expressions and scary features. This is especially shown at the beginning as the beginning is ment to be frightening. We also see some establishing shots at the start to establish the setting (an airport and a city). High angle shots and birds eye view on the zombies to make them look inferior and lonely. Extreme close ups and close ups are used when the two protagonists first meet to highlight the emotions of them falling in love.

Editing

The shots at the start are very fast paced and short, this creates a sense of urgancy, action, adrenaline, excitement and danger. The slower pace near the end however, reflects the romantic theme. Slow motion is used when the characters fall in love to reflect on the intimate moment. Montage editing is used to show the audience a range of the best clips from the film . They also use fade to blacks when the zombies are attacking to possibly symbolise death, creating fear and representing the horro side of the genre. The clips are also in chronoligcal order to give the audience an idea of the plot. The long suration long shot of the protagonist walking past the evolution poster and when passing the plane shows the extent of his isolation and loneliness; creating some sort of sympathy for that character.

Sound

A voiceover of a human leader talking on a screen is used at the start of the trailer, whilst fast paced clips of zombies are shown. He sounds very serious and intense, this intensifies the action and makes it quite frightening- which draws the audience in. The music is very sinister and dark at the start, to create an expectation that zombies are going to be scary (which is later contradicted when you hear the protagonist speak). The sound is also quicker at the start to compliment the fast paced editing. When we see the characters fall in love we are introduced to a dramatic change in sound, as an old fashioned love song is played- to emphasize the love they feel for each other. The heartbeat sound effect is quite stereotypical and cheesy, but it further reflects the theme of romance. The protagonists voiceover reflects his point of view and makes us sympathize and start to relate and grow an attachment to this character. The use of pop music in the middle creates a light hearted tone and will appeal to the target market. Snippets of dialogue is used to give the impression of a narrative and also introduces the characters. For example the trailer features some jokes suggesting the film has a comical element.

Credits and titles

The credits throughout/at the end of the trailer give information on the producer, the studio, the distributors and the date of the release of the film. Warm Bodies does not show the characters names as they are not well known and so wouldn't encourage anyone to watch the film specifically because of the actors.Intertitles are used throughout the Warm Bodies trailer to create a theme and link it to the other marketing strategies used, for example the film poster.Production company at 0:53 secondsRelease date at 1:26 secondsThe word 'LOVE' at 1:32 secondsThe words 'MAKES US HUMAN' at 1:38 secondsTitle, 'WARM BODIES' at 1:47 seconds'COMING SOON' at 1:58 secondsThe intertitles have a theme- a red background with white and black text gives a sense of the genre and also links to other marketing strategies. For example, the red connotes blood and evil and the black and white symbolise life and death- which is a common theme used throughout the film.
