the Earth The three basic types of maps we’ll
be using include: Physical Maps: used to show
physical land features
Political Maps: used to show political units (countries, states, counties, towns)
Historical/Special Purpose Maps: used to show specific information (battles in a war or where natural resources can be found in a given area)

Title The Title is usually
found at the top of the map Titles can help you figure
out what type of map you’re looking at
Titles can also tell you the focus of the map
What is the title of this map?
Map Key A Key or Legend is
used to describe the symbols and/or colors on the map
The Key can help you understand the information contained on the map
Keys are also necessary to answer questions about the map
Compass Rose The Compass Rose
shows which way the directions north (N), south (S), east (E) and west (W) point on the map
Long ago, maps were not always oriented the same way!
Describe the relative location of Utah using the directions in the Compass Rose.
Scale The Scale shows the
ratios between a unit of length on the map and a unit of distance on the earth
You can use the Scale to find the actual distance between two places on the map
Grid- Latitude & Longitude Maps show (imaginary) Grid Lines running both north to south and east to west
Grid Lines represent lines of Latitude & Longitude on the map
You can use lines of Latitude and Longitude to pinpoint any place on the globe
Lines of Latitude run EAST to WEST
Lines of Longitude run NORTH to SOUTH
