FARMING LIFE ACTIVITY

Please read the article “The Farming Life” and use it to document and describe the three seasons of the Egyptian Farmer.

SEASONS OF THE NILE

The Nile flooded on a regular basis. There was a:

FLOOD SEASON:

It lasted from June-September. It was also called the INUNDATION. During this time, the farmers would provide a “work-tax” for the pharaoh. They would build things like the PYRAMIDS and roads.

PLANTING SEASON

It lasted from September-February when the flood waters would recede and the farmers would plant their crops like figs, watermelons, and grain.

HARVEST SEASON

It lasted from February to June, which is when fully grown crops were collected.

GIFTS OF THE NILE

The Nile provided many “gifts”. These are items that the Nile provided to the people. They are:

FOOD: like FISH, WATERFOWL, PLANTS, ETC.

WATER: for DRINKING and IRRIGATION

TRANSPORTATION and TRAVEL

SILT which is thick, FERTILE soil found on the BOTTOM of the river. It was left behind when the river FLOODS

PAPYRUS: A REED found in the river. It was used to make PAPER

A DIVIDED EGYPT

Egypt was originally divided into 2 separate kingdoms: __________Upper____________ and _________Lower ________________ Egypt.

  Upper Egypt was the ______lower___________________ part of Egypt. It

was called that because of its ________higher_______________ elevation.

The King of Upper Egypt wore a tall, ____white_________, pear-shaped crown.

 

Lower Egypt was the northern part of Egypt. It was the area around the Nile River _____Delta____________________. It was called “lower” because

it was at a _______lower___________________ elevation.

The King of Lower Egypt wore a short, boxy, _____red_________ crown.

GIFTS OF THE NILE

Gifts often come with wrapping paper. The Gifts of the Nile need wrapping paper as well.

Task: You will select 3/5 gifts and design wrapping paper based the benefits or uses of the gift. Use your notes and be creative.

What is needed:

1). Square wrapping paper design

2). Creative bow that will be used to wrap the gift
