THE ROCK CYCLE
Warm-Up-What was the best thing you did over winter break?
WHAT IS A ROCK?
A mixture of minerals, volcanic glass, organic matter, or other materials.
WHAT IS THE ROCK CYCLE?
A model that illustrates the processes that creates and changes rocks.
Cycle shows 3 types of rock Igneous Metamorphic Sedimentary
IGNEOUS
Rock that forms when magma cools and hardens
Intrusive Igneous: cool inside the volcano
Extrusive Igneous: cool outside of the volcano
METAMORPHIC
Rocks that have changed because of changes in temperature and pressure or the presence of hot watery fluids. Foliated Rocks: When mineral grains flatten
and line up in parallel layers Nonfoliated Rocks: no layers are formed
SEDIMENTS
Loose material such as rock fragments, mineral grains and bits of shell that has been moved by wind, water, ice or gravity.
SEDIMENTARY ROCK
Rocks that form when sediments are pressed and cemented together.

ROCK CYCLE GAME
Start at a station 1-11 Roll the dice – record your starting
point and your roll in your journal Follow the directions of your die (move
or stay) Keep playing until I call time
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (ANSWER IN WARM UP JOURNAL Where did you spend most of your time? What might be some reasons that some
people went to every station while others only went to four or five?
What might be a reason that everyone followed a different path?
How does the water cycle influence the rock cycle?
In what kinds of environments do sedimentary rock form? Igneous? Metamorphic?
Write a narration, song or poem from the view point of the element about 2 million years (7 stations) of their life in the rock cycle.
Life story of the elements you followed through the cycle
