• What do you think they have in common?

expensive, valuable, …

Why do many people spend so much money on them?

They are cultural relics.

Do you know what cultural relics are?

Can you give some examples of the cultural relics both at home and abroad?

What are cultural relics?• A cultural relic is something that has

survived for a long time, often a part of something old that has remained when the rest has been destroyed; it tells people about the past.

文化遗产日 the Second Saturday of June

National Cultural Heritage Day

• Can you give some examples

• of the cultural relics both at home and abroad?

非物质文化( the Intangible Cultural Heritage )

China has greatly increased the expense on its culture relic protection from 16.1 million US dollars in 1994 to 66.6 million US dollars in 2005, Chinese Cultural Minister Sun Jiazheng said at the press conference held at the Information Office of the State Council on May 25.

• 1 .征求看法( Asking for opinions ) • Are you sure he / she was telling the truth? How do yo

u know that?• How can you be sure he / she was telling the truth?• Why / Why not?•  2 .发表看法 ( Giving opinions )• I don't believe ..., because .... • That can't be true . It is ( not ) a fact .• I ( don't ) agree with you . I don't agree that .... • It can be proved . The truth is ( not ) easy to know .• I think they have said useful things.... has no reason to

lie

• According to the second national cultural relic census conducted in the 1980s, China then had 400,000 immovable cultural relics. However, at least one-third of them had been eras from the map, according to experts' estimation, most of them being destroyed by human forces.

• Some typical cases regarding cultural relic protection in recent years also revealed that protection of historical relics appeared so weak compared with the short-term local interest.

• A more serious phenomenon that should arouse public concern is that some ancient cultural sites are guarded by only one or two persons, where even a thief can easily go in and make away with the relics, not to mention tomb diggers.

• Although China has already published relative laws and regulations for cultural relic protection, owing to people's negligence, such laws and regulations exist in name only in some places.

• To lighten the economic burden on their shoulders and create more profits, local governments often remain blind to tourism development projects that might damage cultural relics.

• According to international cultural relics preservation conventions, every country has a duty to preserve relics and pass them down to future generations.

• "Cultural relics protection should make way for economic development," it seems, has become a well-entrenched mantra in many localities.

• When cultural relics are ruined for the sake of renovation or expansion, a city's continuous civilization tradition comes to an end.

Paris

The Eiffel Tower, the most famous city landmark in Paris, was designed by Gustave Eiffel and erected (1887-9) in the Champs-de-Mars for the Paris Exhibition of 1889. The tower consists of an open-lattice framework supporting three tiered platforms. It is 300 m (984 ft.) high. It was the tallest structure in the world until 1930 when the Empire State Building was completed. It is of interest that Gustave Eiffel also designed the steel framework of the Statue of Liberty.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge

StonehengeThe megalithic ruin known as Stonehenge stands on the open downland of Salisbury Plain two miles (three kilometres) west of the town of Amesbury, Wiltshire, in Southern England. It is not a single structure but consists of a series of earth, timber, and stone structures that were revised and re-modelled over a period of more than 1400 years. In the 1940s and 1950s, Richard Atkinson proposed that construction occurred in three phases, which he labelled Stonehenge I, II, IIIa, IIIb, and IIIc. This sequence has recently been revised in Archaeological Report (10) published by English Heritage.

1.What are the similarities of these cultural relics?

• All these cultural relics are quite beautiful. But some of them were lost or ruined in history, such as Yuan Ming Yuan, The Great Wall, The Pyramid.

• what can cause them lost or ruined?

1. Maybe they were destroyed by natural disasters (wind and rain).

2.Maybe they were even stolen by invaders during wars.

Now our government has spent a lot of money on rebuilding it. Do you think it is worthwhile?

1.They have great value to us.2.They tell us what our ancestors ( 祖先) were and what their life was like.3.They tell us the history of our country, no one should forget the past.

As we known, some of the cultural relics were destroyed during the war. Such as Yuan Ming Yuan, it was burnt out by the invaders.

Useful expression:I think it is worthwhile because...I don’t think so because...

In October, 1860, the Yuanmingyuan Park was destroyed by the Anglo-French Joint Forces or the armies of France and Britain. Now many people hope to rebuild the Park. Do you think it necessary to rebuild the Park? Please discuss this topic with your partners and tell us your ideas.
