Encouragement
Congratulations to Ms Kia Waqanivalu and Ms
Jayde Cairns who will join the Warrandyte
Primary School staff in 2018. We look forward
to welcoming them to the school later in the
term when they will spend some time with their
new class.
Literacy Leadership Workshop
Last Tuesday, Rick, Katie and myself attended
a Literacy Leaders Workshop held at
Heidelberg. A key Education State target is to
lift literacy levels by 25 per cent over the next
five to ten years. This course focused on
equipping school leaders and teachers with the
necessary knowledge and skills to meet these
targets.
Leading Literacy focussed on literacy and
leadership. The leadership component built the
capabilities and dispositions required to lead
school improvement that results in improved
student outcomes. The literacy content and
pedagogical knowledge component reinforced
the key capabilities to successfully address the
excellence in teaching and learning FISO
(Framework for Improving Student Outcomes)
priority area. In 2018, every school must have a
literacy goal in their Annual Implementation
Plan.

Year 2 Camp Experience Day
Last Thursday, our Year 2 students attended a whole day camping experience at Healesville. Students
spent the day at the camp and participated in a range of outdoor adventure activities. The students are
to be commended on their attitude and dedication shown towards the activities and I was most
impressed by their perseverance in completing the challenging tasks. Thank you to Jo and Gill for
organising the camp, Yvette and Kellee for assisting on the day.
2018 Student Leadership Roles
Our 2018 School Captains, who were nominated and voted for by staff, will be announced at
Assembly in the coming weeks.
Our House and Vice Captains, as too Social Service Captains, will be announced at the final Assembly
on Friday 22 December.
Our House and Vice Captains are voted for by their house peers. Social Service Captains are selected
by Year 5 teachers and the Leadership Team.
Congratulations to
Jarrah (5/6M) who was presented with his ICAS English competition medal (achieving a
perfect score) on Monday afternoon at a special ceremony at the Melbourne Convention
Centre
All students who received their black belt, orange belt and Grand Master awards at our special

FOWPS Report
The 3 events coming up are the student art
fundraiser, Christmas hamper raffle and the
Christmas Carols evening.
Christmas Carols Wednesday 13 December
– get there early for refreshments and photo
booth!
We will be selling Warrandyte Berry Farm
berries with cream and ice cream from 6:45pm
and will have a raffle on the night. Due to
popular demand we will set up the ‘photo
booth’ again for your WPS Christmas photo
for a gold coin donation before the show.
Make sure you get your picture between
6:30pm and 7:15pm as it will be packed up
before the carols start.
We are asking for volunteers to help prepare
the strawberries on the afternoon of the
13th and to help serve on the night. If you can
let Fiona or Meg know if you are available
(and when) that would be great.

wanted to make a hamper for the end of year

Hiragana Blackbelts = Persistence and
Resilience
Hiragana Blackbelts = Persistence and
Resilience
Congratulations to all students who increased
their Hiragana Blackbelt scores during the 4
week Hiragana Challenge this term. Many
students achieved different colour belts which
are attached to their Japanese workbooks, but a
record number of students this year also
achieved their Hiragana Orange Belts (Preps)
and Blackbelts (Grades 1 – 6), and they
received decorated blackbelts at our Japanese
Assembly on Monday. Mastering the reading
and writing of another script language writing
system is a difficult task, even for adults. But
with sheer persistence, a lot of practice and the
resilience to keep trying even when they didn’t
quite make it (often coming to the Japanese
room at lunchtimes for extra practice), the
following students have conquered the first 46
Hiragana writing characters and should be
justifiably proud of their achievement:
Preps – Orange Belts (able to read the first 15
characters)
Summer, Luca, Sonia, Tom & Darcy.
Grade 1/2 Blackbelts (able to read all 46 basic
characters)
1/2G - Sadie, Holly, Bridie, Sienna, Evie &
Gemma.
1/2J Cate, Reve, Samuel, Kaori, Joe, Ava,
Hunter, Jesse & Mitchell.
Grade 3-6 Blackbelts (able to read and write all
46 basic characters)
3/4J - Charlie, Max, Ella, Cameron, Jarrah,
Jacob & Owen.
3/4KS - Bel, Farrah, Trixie, Lenny & Maggie.
3/4C - Henry & Tessa.
5/6S - Holly, Grace & Lilly K.
5/6M - Aimee, Lily D & Sive.
5/6R - Charlotte, Scout, Angelina, Eden, Jake
& Cassie,
In addition, many students decided to push on
further than the 46 basic characters, and attempt
to conquer writing the full 107 Hiragana
set. This is a really amazing effort. This year’s
recipients of the Hiragana Masters Awards are:
Sive, Aimee, Lily D, Angelina, Eden, Scout,
Jake, Lilly K, Grace, Holly B, Jacob, Max, Ella,
Jarrah P, Trixie, Farrah, Bel, Cameron & Owen.
Minasan, omedetou gozaimashita. (Everyone,
congratulations).

Warrandyte Community Carols
Don’t forget, if your child would like to sing
with Kevin O’Mara on stage at the Community
Carols at Stiggants Reserve, on Saturday
December 16th, he or she is welcome to do so.
Kevin is performing two songs with some of the
School Bushband instrumental players
accompanying him. He would like children
from the school to join him on stage to sing the
second song, ‘Warrandyte Christmas’. The
performance will begin around 8.00 – 8.15pm.
There will be practices at school with the
children who will be participating. The first
practice is THIS FRIDAY DECEMBER 1ST at
3.10pm.

Sport News
Sport Uniforms
There are still a number of students who have
not returned uniforms from interschool sport in
term 2 and students having not returned singlets
from the District Basketball round robin. Please
return this week, these uniforms are needed for
sport photos.
Lost Property
As we are approaching the end of the year it
would be a good idea to come and check lost
property. Also with the warmer weather
students are not likely to miss tops and jackets.
