1 Warranwood Primary School www.warranwood.vic.edu.au THAT WAS TERM ONE!! As we keep saying – it has been a busy term. SO much has happened in every one of those busy weeks! For me the highlight was yesterday’s Prep Grandparents’ Day. It was the high- light because we got to see the amazing progress our youngest students have made over such a short time. Who would have thought that they would be so confident sharing their learning, explaining what happens in each day and giving tours of the school? It is this joy of learning and the celebration of great relationships that makes our school a very special place. A sad day today as well, because it marks the departure of three staff members who have contributed so much to the school in three very different ways. Sue is stepping up to the next stage of her career, where she will make an outstanding Principal. Jenny Porter is retiring, however I am sure we will see her back here at Warranwood in a different capacity, as she has so much still to offer our profession. And finally Di Measom has made a difference to the lives of so many young people here at Warranwood in her capacity as an aide. I know every- one will join me in wishing each of these staff members well in the future. On behalf of all staff at Warranwood thank you for your support so far this year, particularly those people who helped out in classrooms, on camp, at swimming, at sausage sizzles, in fundraising activities and a whole lot more!! Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2016 The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and we are excited about participating again this year. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to 16 years in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by the closing date of the challenge. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teach-ers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. You can register your child by completing the form in this newsletter and returning it to school. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Prem-ier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. For more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and to view the booklists, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc I hope that we have many enthusiastic Warranwood students participating this year! THE RESILIENCE PROJECT The Resilience Project is a powerful program founded by Hugh van Cuylenburg. Hugh started out as a pri-mary school teacher and went to work in underprivileged schools in the Himalayas, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka where he “discovered resilience in its purest form”. What makes the children in these poverty stricken countries so resilient when children in Australia are facing a mental health crisis? Hugh believes it is EMPATHY, GRATITUDE and MINDFULNESS. The values that the children in these countries have are immunising them against Mental Health issues when they have virtually nothing in mate-rial terms in comparison to the children in Australia. The resilience in the children Hugh met in his work overseas can teach us so much about making our own lives better. Hugh invites you to come and listen to his stories about these children and learn how to make you and your family the strongest it has ever been!!

Date: Tuesday 26th April Time: 7.30pm – 9.00pm

Location: WPS in the Senior School Building Speaker: Hugh van Cuylenburg – The Resilience Project

Cost: FREE

Peaceful Kids is a wellbeing program that I am running throughout the year in small groups at WPS. The program includes Mindfulness and Positive Psychology strategies to teach kids lifelong self-regulation and coping skills. I have one spot left for a Grade 5 girl and a Grade 3 or 4 Boy for Term 2. If you have a child who would benefit from some social/emotional support please email me by Wednesday 13th April on [email protected] It is an 8 week program run for 1 hour per week during class time.

JAPANESE CORNER Taiko news The Year 6 taiko group had their first performance this week. They performed for the prep grandparents in an outdoor setting which was very well received. De-spite the 27degree heat we had a huge audience of students and visitors. We are looking forward to more performance opportunities for for both drumming groups next term! Middle School Taiko Please note that three students from each middle school class have been ran-domly selected to participate in weekly taiko sessions with Suzie next term. The Ringwood Hawks basketball club will again be supporting Brady by celebrating World Clubfoot Day. This year they will be hosting a double header game at 'The Rings' against Bulleen on 21st May. Both the Men's and Women's teams will be wearing yellow (Brady's favourite colour) and black socks that were kindly donated to Brady by Nike! The women's game is at 6pm and the men's at 8pm. There will be a dunk or two so come along and support Brady, it would be fantastic for him to see some of his Warranwood Primary school friends.
