Thanks to Tanya Barlow for organising the event, which she did with lots of assistance from Aya sensei, staff, par- ents, students and many others connected to our school com- munity. It was a joyous day thanks to the great attitude of our students! UNIFORM We are coming up to the final 6 months of the changeover period for our new school uniform. From the begin- ning of 2016 students will no longer be allowed to wear the old school uniform. As a result we will no longer be selling the old uniform as of the beginning of next term. The final sales days for the old uniform will be tomorrow and next week. See Jill for some bargains – but please remember they can only be worn until the end of 2015. We are aware of some people’s concerns regarding winter uniform – we are waiting on a sample of a long sleeved top to arrive. A sensible option on cold days is the old-fashioned singlet! Those students who are over- dressed at the beginning of the day tend to peel off the warm things once they get to school and run around or are busy in their classrooms. Active children don’t need lots of layers! THE EDUCATION STATE The Victorian Government is currently consulting with the community through two papers. One is about what ‘The Education State’ might look like and the other is a paper about the school system. We will be conducting a forum for our community on Monday 21 July. The consultation papers were emailed to everyone with the newsletter notifica- tion today or are available at http:// educationstate.education.vic.gov.au/ We will send out an invitation shortly. REPORTS Your child’s report will be available on Compass tomorrow. If you have forgotten your login/password please contact Brigid at the office – most people are using Compass for attendance reporting, so there should be very few people in that situation. If you don’t understand anything that is in the report, please ask!! Don’t forget parent/student/ teacher interviews on Monday and Tuesday! Students are expected to attend and be part of the conversation – it is about them after all! TRIVIA NIGHT Thanks to Michelle Hudson and team for organising last Saturday’s Trivia Night. Great to see so many people there. Also great that we were able to organise two staff tables, although it was unfairly balanced – I wasn’t on the winning table!

SCHOOL COUNCIL Your School Council meets regularly to discuss school programs and policy. We have a number of sub-committees that are integral to the functioning and management of the school. Each of these sub-committees is open to school parents to come along and be part of! Promotions – looks at ways to improve the profile of the school in our community. Education – provides information for our community around mainly curriculum based issues. Develops policies around most school functions. Sustainability – responsibility for grounds development. Finance – ensures school finances are being expended correctly. Canteen – canteen management. PA/Spring Fair – parent based group doing wonderful work to support school programs and social activity. Assistants Principal’s Report Planning Week The teachers have been preparing units of work for term 3. Thanks to all staff for their hard work while the stu-dents have had the treat of all their specialists in one day. The units are as follows: Prep – Living, Non-Living and Once Living Junior – Weather Middle – Aboriginal Studies and the First Fleet Senior – Out of this World Parent/Teacher/ Student Interviews I hope all families have secured their interview times for Monday or Tuesday. We would like students to come along and participate in the development of learning goals for the second semester. If you feel there are some issues you would like to discuss, you are welcome to send your child out of the room towards the end. Cybersafety We all know that the use of social media is growing in our student population. This can present some challeng-ing issues for parenting in these times. We run a number of programs within the school to support students. In addition to these we have organised Martine Oglethorpe to present to parents on Tuesday July 28th, 7.30pm. Martine is a cybersafety consultant, speaker on ‘Parenting in the Modern World’, family counsellor and blogger. The school will be funding the night so that parents have the opportunity to be supported in their roles in our modern times. Please keep the night free and an attendance slip will come home in the first week of next term. Sue Dean Assistant Principal

MIDDLE SCHOOL WELLBEING PROGRAM 2 weeks ago we had the boys’ session on Winning and Losing and Dealing with Failure. We talked about... What’s NOT Helpful Needing to win at all costs Comparing yourself to others – everyone is different with strengths and weaknesses Giving up

What’s Helpful Congratulating yourself on what you did well

Reflecting on what you could do better next time

Practising skills to improve for next time

Using Positive Self-Talk after a loss or fail

Seeing the blessing or learning in what seems to be a failure or loss or something negative i.e. gaining an inju-

ry, so then changing focus onto a new skill and developing even more success…all because you failed.

Last week was an intro to Resilience. Learnings were – What is Resilience? What might life ‘throw’ at us that we will need to be Resilient to? What does Resilience LOOK and SOUND like? How do you we become Resilient? We need to develop Personal Powers such as Confidence, Assertiveness, Empathy, Self-Regulation etc. One easy and useful tool that the kids can use immediately is a Visualisation. They put their Shield of Resilience up over their chest and imagine that the adversity is bouncing of their shield and not penetrating it. This protects and strengthens their Personal Powers. **We made it very clear that it is normal and healthy to have feelings and these will still be felt and expressed, however Resilience allows you to manage those feelings and not get stuck. Sports News

Warranwood had 4 students compete in the regional cross country run last Tuesday. The Rregion event is huge with both primary and secondary students running throughout the day. Both Emily P and Sophie S ran in fields of about 90 students and Emily finished a creditable 38th and Sophie in the 60s. Rhys H and Cooper D ran in the last event of the day and after 16 earlier events they got a ‘wet, muddy’ track. Rhys and Cooper both earned well deserved medals for their runs with Cooper 2nd and Rhys 3rd. Well done to the 4 runners.

JAPANESE CORNER JAPANESE DAY! What an amazing day we had last Thursday. We had perfect weather for our Japanese Day activities and performances. Students took part in a busy day full of fun! There was cooking, brush painting, origami, sport, story telling, ink dyeing, goldfish scooping, headband making and more! We ended the day with a whole school performance and best-dressed parade. Thank you to the parents for their creative efforts in costume design and to Aya Sensei who helped us create a very memorable community event! Tanya Barlow Japanese Teacher
