GM’s most recent sustainabili-ty report, issued on May 10, hassome interesting things to sayabout the future of people’s rela-tionships with automobiles.The report stated that the
rules of vehicle use and owner-ship are changing rapidly, saidGM spokeswoman Becky Price.Connectivity, car-sharing, alter-native propulsion and autono-mous vehicles are key elementstoward a future of safer, cleanerand more efficient mobility op-tions for customers.“We see tremendous potential

The future looks very brightfor the U.S. auto industry. Sobright, in fact, said US Auto ana-lyst in Equity Research for Mer-rill Lynch John Murphy, the in-dustry should be able to makeand sell 20 million vehicles in theyear 2018.Murphy presented his analy-
sis, which he did for MerrillLynch and Back of America, at aspecial luncheon sponsored bythe Automotive Press Associa-
tion at the Detroit Athletic ClubMay 11.Murphy said his analysis was
based, in part, on the theory thatsales success and market sharecan be predicted based on therate of introduction of new mod-els.“I know when I say 20 million
sales in the year 2018, I get a fewraised eyebrows,” Murphy said.“In 2008, when the market col-lapsed and credit froze, car salesdropped to 10 million units. Idon’t think we’ll ever see a down-
turn like that again. Right nowwe’re on an upturn.”Murphy said his analysis
shows that between credit beingavailable, economic prosperity inthe general population and re-placement cycle of cars on theroad, 20 million sales in 2018 isvery possible.And which automakers cap-
ture sales that year will be deter-mined, in large part, by whichones have the freshest productsin the marketplace, he said.By that reckoning, GM should
be in very good shape for thenext few years, Murphy said.GM will have a strong mix of
SUVs, CUVs and pickup trucks inthe next few years, Murphy said.These are the vehicles that arebecoming more popular with thebuying public. Traditionalsedans, on the other hand, arestagnating in sales. And GM willbe introducing a lot of refreshedor redesigned models just as themarket is peaking.

“We forecast GM’s product ca-dence to remain solid in modelyears 2017-2020 as the companylaunches a dozen new CUVs andits next-gen trucks,” Murphysaid. “There is a slight slow startin model year 2017 and there is asurge of product with all-important nameplates like theChevrolet Traverse and Equinoxin model year 2018. There is fur-ther follow-through in modelyear 2019, with the new Chevro-let Silverado and GMC Sierra andin model year 2020 with the fullslate of SUVs.”
Murphy said this accelerationof truck introductions is a result,in part, of fierce competitionwithin that market segment.
So, Murphy said, GM’s vehiclereplacement rate of 88 over thenext four years is above the in-dustry average and should servethe company very well at a timewhen vehicle sales are predictedto reach record heights.
Murphy said that Ford, formany of the same reasons as GM,is also in pretty good shape tocapture sales and market sharein the next few years. The com-pany’s product replacement ratebetween model years 2017through 2020 is 86 percent. Justbelow GM, but better than the in-dustry average during that sameperiod of 81 percent. But there isone caveat.
“As management remains fo-cused on maximizing profit,”Murphy said, “market share maybe traded for higher prices andhigher profits. Ford’s replace-ment rate is ok in model years2017 and 2018,” Murphy said.“But in the first two years Ford issomewhat overweight in cars,but in the last two years there isan extreme shift toward CUVs
and trucks that should drive theportfolio mix materially better.”
As for Fiat Chrysler, Murphysaid the company has been rela-tively successful in workingthrough a lull in product replace-ment.
The company’s replacementrate should accelerate stronglyin the model years 2017 through2020.
The new Pacifica, introducedin model year 2017, as well as theRam 1500 and Jeep Wrangler,both getting new versions inmodel year 2018, should reallyhelp Chrysler’s sales, Murphysaid.
Overall, Murphy said, FiatChrysler’s vehicle replacementrate over the next four modelyears is just below Ford and GMat 84 percent. That’s better thanthe industry average of 81 per-cent. And the company is “over-indexed to CUVs with ninelaunches. This bodes well for themix ratio for the next few yearsto come.”
While Detroit automakers havejumped on the CUV/SUV/Truckbandwagon at the right time,other OEMs haven’t been as pre-scient, Murphy said. He notedthat Toyota’s replacement rate is79 percent compared with the in-dustry average of 81 percent.And its mix is skewed towardmid-sized and large cars – a newCamry will be launched in modelyear 2018 and a new Avalon inmodel year 2019 – at a time whencar popularity is not as strong asin the past.
Murphy also said that Toyota’sreplacement rate is “slightlyover-indexed to small cars be-cause of the launch of the Corollain model year 2020 and the Yarisin model year 2019.”
Honda, Murphy said, has thehighest replacement rate of
Japanese automakers – 85 per-cent – and the company’s focusof well-planned four- to five-yearproduct redesign cycles shouldserve the company well.
Nissan, on the other hand, is ata risk of losing market share froma lack of product direction and aproduct replacement rate thatlags behind the industry.
Kia and Hyundai’s product mixthat skews toward small andmid/large cars creates risk,Murphy said.
He and his colleagues notethat the product replacementrate of 76 percent makes erosionof market share over the nextfour years possible. And there is
also risk to vehicle pricing,which affects profits.
After giving his speech, Mur-phy answered some questions.When asked about Tesla, Murphysaid he was skeptical that thecompany could build 500,000 ve-hicles a year in one factory. Henoted that no company has donethat before.
But even if Tesla as a companyfails, Tesla as a concept will havemade a huge contribution to theauto industry because the com-pany has spurred GM and otherautomakers to create new prod-ucts and develop technologythat wouldn’t have otherwisebeen created.

Industry May Be Looking at 20 Million in Sales by 2018
TOKYO (AP) – Takata Corp.,the Japanese auto-parts makerbehind massive air-bag recalls, isexpecting a return to profit forthe fiscal year through March2017, although it just agreed torecall millions of additionalparts.
Tokyo-based Takata reporteda loss of 13 billion yen ($120 mil-lion) on May 11 for the fiscalyear that ended in March – itssecond straight year of red ink.
It had originally forecast aprofit, but revised that to a lossearlier this week. It racked up a29.6 billion yen loss the previousfiscal year.
Takata forecast that it wouldreturn to the black in the currentfiscal year, with a 13 billion yen($120 million) profit, althoughthat did not take into accountthe latest recalls.
What lies ahead for Takata islargely unclear because auto-makers handling the recalls –which include many major com-panies such as Honda Motor Co.,Ford Motor Co. and BMW – willbill Takata. And all the replace-ments are not yet done. Class-ac-tion lawsuits that Takata is al-most certain to face will add tothe ballooning expenses.
Scott Upham, CEO of ValientMarket Research in Philadelphia,which tracks air bag sales, calledthe profit forecast “foolhardy,”saying that Takata will lose rev-enue from selling air bag infla-tors as automakers stop buyingfrom the company. Also, auto-makers will start billing Takatafor growing recall costs, he said.
The company, he said, is try-ing to push off recall costs untilthe next fiscal year so it can at-tract financial backing to savethe business. “I would be verysurprised if they’re able to an-nounce a profit at year-end,” hesaid. “I think they’re really un-derestimating the OEMs’ (auto-makers) capability of gettingthat cost back.”
Most companies facing hugeexpenses place them on thebooks in the year they are dis-covered, although companies dohave flexibility, said James An-gel, associate professor of fi-nance at Georgetown University.
“Generally, as soon as youknow that expense is definite,you book the expense,” he said.
Takata air-bag inflators in-volved in the recalls can explodewith too much force and spewshrapnel inside vehicles. The in-flators are responsible for atleast 11 deaths worldwide andmore than 100 injuries.

WINDSOR, Ontario (AP) – FiatChrysler CEO Sergio Marchionnesays working with Google con-vinced him that self-driving tech-nology is closer than he thoughtand could be on the road in fiveyears.
“I don’t find it that unsettling,”Marchionne said last week. “I seethis as having tremendous use inreal life.”
FCA and Google announced apartnership two weeks ago. Thecompanies will work together toadd self-driving technology to100 Chrysler Pacifica minivansfor testing purposes.
This is the first time Googlehas worked directly with an autocompany to install self-drivingsensors and computers.
Marchionne discussed thepartnership at a ceremony tomark launch of Pacifica produc-
tion at FCA’s plant in Windsor.The Pacifica is replacing theChrysler Town and Country.
Some automakers have beenreluctant to team up with techcompanies because they want toown the technology in their cars.But Marchionne says it’s too ear-ly to say who will lead the transi-tion to a self-driving future, soit’s smart for Fiat Chrysler towork with others and learn whatit can.
“Making unequivocal bets andprecluding development withothers is a very dangerous path,at least in our view,” he said.
Marchionne said FCA andGoogle will have to work outspecifics – like who owns thedata in the cars – down the road.
“We need to get to the stagewhere the car is viable before wecan discuss the spoils,” he said.

In addition to year-roundlocal events, MLB and USA Base-ball are holding an inaugural PlayBall Weekend that will featureyouth baseball activities acrossthe country.“Chevrolet’s partnership with

Ford’s new wind tunnel debutsat Flat Rock Assembly Plant –joining a growing fleet of mobiletesting facilities including threeenvironmental evaluation cham-bers, Sethi said.
Changing the business of quietfull-sized aerodynamics labs,such as Ford’s main wind tunnelin Allen Park, the portable tun-nels are outfitted with the latestin sensitive measuring and analy-sis equipment. These office-building-sized facilities arespecialized for advanced aerody-namic and aeroacoustic develop-ment work on future models,with each facility costing about$50 million. Due to the special-ized instruments and cost, run-ning time for these machines isprecious.
Ford’s new mobile wind tunnelcosts a fraction of what a full-sized lab costs, Sethi said. Be-cause testing requires only asteady stream of highway-speedwind, many of the large and sen-sitive instruments of a full aerolab aren’t required. But high-tech, in-cabin sensors like theAachen head and Noise Visioncan still be used.
With an on-site wind noise fa-cility, Ford factories can pull moresample vehicles directly from theline and test them with no delay –eliminating the time and com-plexity of shipping vehicles backand forth across the country.
Issues requiring assemblyprocess refinement can be de-tected and resolved earlier, sinceeverybody involved is on hand.
“Now, we’re able to detecteven the most subtle noises,”said Gulker. “We can identify anarea in need of improvement,have key people gather, commu-nicate quickly, and resolve theissue without delay.”
Similar in concept to a full-scale wind tunnel laboratory, theheart of the mobile facility isbuilt inside two 53-foot shippingcontainers. Each includes aero-acoustic vanes and internal duct-ing to provide smooth, con-trolled airflow at the nozzle endof the machine, while two 16-bladed, six-foot-diameter ductedfans – each powered by a 250-horsepower electric motor – de-liver a maximum blast of 80 mphwind.

The truckcomes with a three-year, 36,000-mile limited warranty, Voss said.

The Automotive Industry Ac-tion Group (AIAG) has created anew online portal to help con-nect OEMs and suppliers whohave lost returnable transportitems (RTIs) with those whohave found them.
The RTI portal facilitates theprocess of locating lost RTIs(called orphans) and clearingthem from the factory floor orwarehouse where they were left.The goal is to save time andmoney by accelerating thesearch and recovery process,said AIAG spokesman GregCreason.
“Often, a company has RTIs onsite that they know belong tosomeone else, but they don’tknow how to get in touch withthe owner or arrange a pickup,”said Lang Ware, director of Sup-ply Chain Products and Servicesfor AIAG.
“The AIAG RTI Portal allowscompanies to list their RTIs orfind out who is the rightfulowner of an RTI left in their facil-ity.”
Creation of the RTI portal is adirect result of the industry ask-ing AIAG to develop a programfor orphan containers piling upin their assembly plants and fac-tories, Creason said. The con-tainers – which range from smallto elaborate – cannot be reusedby the company that receivesthem because they are designedfor specific parts manufacturedby the container’s owner.
Accessible only by AIAG mem-bers, the AIAG RTI Portal is afree service that lists RTIs – in-cluding photos and descriptions– to help the owner locate andre-claim them. “Often, the right-ful owner doesn’t even realizethe container is missing,” saidWare.

With an omni-channel ap-proach, the connected experi-ence doesn’t end inside thevehicle, Colley said. Customerscan stay connected to their vehi-cle on the web with Owner Cen-ter and with their mobile device.
Below are some of the con-nected vehicle solutions avail-able to GM and Maven cus-tomers today.
GM, Colley said, has more 4GLTE vehicles than any other auto-maker, with nearly 3 million Wi-Fi-enabled vehicles on the roadconnected by OnStar 4G LTE.
Today, owners can use 4G LTEto connect up to seven mobiledevices to a built-in Wi-Fihotspot. In the future, the 4G LTEplatform will allow customers toupdate certain systems after avehicle purchase.
The OnStar RemoteLink mo-bile app has 2.5 million activeusers in North America, Europeand China, Colley said. The appis used more than 10 milliontimes every month to remotelystart, lock and unlock vehicles,get vehicle data, send directionsto the car and more.
In the first quarter of 2016,the app was used for more
than 50 million interactions.And that’s not all, Colley said,

To date, customers haveopened more than 600,000 mon-ey-saving offers from participat-ing partners such as Dunkin’Donuts, Parkopedia, ExxonMobil,Groupon and more.
Additionally, more than 10,000hotel reservations have beenbooked using Priceline viaAtYourService.
Every month, nearly 5 millioncustomers receive a Vehicle Di-agnostics Report providing themwith a comprehensive evaluationof their vehicles’ key operatingsystems, Colley said.
Soon, customers will have ac-cess to Proactive Alerts, whichwill notify them of potential vehi-cle component issues before per-formance is affected.
And the addition of new auto-motive technology just doesn’tend at features in a vehicle,Colley said.
Even those who don’t own aGM vehicle now have access toOnStar services and featuresthrough recently launched urbanmobility solutions.
Maven, a new car-sharingbrand that was launched in AnnArbor, New York City and Chica-go, has already surpassed 1,000registered users since openingup services. Working togetherwith Lyft, GM also launched Ex-press Drive, a short-term rentalprogram that makes vehiclesavailable to Lyft drivers at afford-able rates.

Automakers are doing morethan ever before to meet nation-al fuel efficiency standards, with56 percent of available vehiclemodels matching or exceedingtoday’s targets, according to anew analysis of 1,094 2016 mod-els by the Consumer Federationof America (CFA).
“Fuel efficiency increasinglycomes standard with new cars,trucks, and SUVs,” said JackGillis, director of Public Affairsfor CFA. “Even if you’re in themarket for a large pickup or SUV,you’d have to go out of your wayto find a true gas guzzler.”
Further, the vast majority ofAmericans want fuel-efficient ve-hicles, according to CFA’s newconsumer survey conducted inMarch by ORC International,Gillis said. Despite current lowgas prices, 81 percent of con-sumers said gas mileage will bean important consideration nexttime they go shopping for a newcar. The same percentage saidthey support federal fuel econo-my standards.
“It’s no surprise that fuel effi-ciency is still a top priority asconsumers have had a long his-tory with volatile gas prices,”said Gillis
Model year 2016 is the third ina row in which more than half ofall passenger car and truck mod-els offered for sale in the UnitedStates meet or beat the nationalstandards. Gillis said it’s impor-tant to note that automakersmust meet fuel-efficiency re-quirements on an average basisacross fleets’ and vehicles’classes, so some models can bebelow the standard as long asothers exceed them.
CFA found that highly efficientmodels achieving more than 30mpg in on-road tests continue toproliferate, Gillis said, compris-ing 13.4 percent of availablemodels this year, up from 11.7percent last year. In 2008, only 1percent of vehicle modelsachieved 30 mpg or more.
SUVs and pickups have be-come much more efficient, too,Gillis said. Overall, vehicles thatget less than 16 mpg declined tojust 4 percent of available mod-els, down from 6.1 percent a yearago. These inefficient vehiclescomprised 32.2 percent of avail-able models as recently as 2008.

DETROIT (AP) – Ten founda-tions are pledging tens of mil-lions of dollars toward helpingFlint recover from the crisisspurred by lead-contaminateddrinking water.
Researchers last year report-ed high levels of lead in theblood of Flint children, for whomthe heavy metal can cause lowerIQs and behavioral problems.
The organizations announcedtheir support May 11, led by theCharles Stewart Mott Founda-tion. The Flint-based organiza-tion said it’s committing $50 mil-lion in new and existing grantsthis year and up to $100 millionoverall during the next fiveyears. The money aims to sup-port efforts in six areas: safe wa-ter, health care, early education,nonprofits, community engage-ment and economic develop-ment.
Mott Foundation PresidentRidgway White says the “crisis isfar from over’’ and more moneyis needed. The state so far hascommitted roughly $70 million.
Other organizations makingpledges include the CarnegieCorp. of New York and the Ford,Kresge, Robert Wood Johnson,Skillman and W.K. Kellogg foun-dations.
