November 5, 2014

ovember is a busy month at Warren! Schools are

closed for PreK Students on Thursday,

November 13th and for all students on Friday,

November 14th for Elementary Conference Day. This

year report cards will be distributed on Thursday,

November 13th prior to conference day. Please plan to

meet with your child’s teacher during this month to have

a good understanding of his or her progress toward

grade level expectations. If you have not already done so

please sign up in the new BCPS One system. BCPS is

pleased to share this additional resource to assist you in

supporting your children’s academic success. This

online resource will allow you to check your children’s

grades and assignments, access educational resources,

and link to school websites. If you need an additional

instruction sheet please contact your child’s homeroom

teacher.

American Education Week is November 17th through

the 21st. Again this year’s theme is Great Public Schools:

A Basic Right and Our Responsibility. Each grade level

is inviting parents to visit one morning during that week

and all grandparents are invited to visit us on Friday,

November 21st. Please make time to show your child how

much you value what they are learning every day.

Parents are reminded that drivers in the Kiss and Go loop for afternoon pick up must remain in their cars. Do not get out of your car and go up to get your child from his or her classroom. If that is how you would like to pick up your child, please park your car in a legal parking spot and walk up to the school building. Cars in the Kiss and Go loop must keep the line moving to make the process work.

Finally, as we celebrate Thanksgiving this month, I am

reminded how thankful I am to be here at Warren

working with your children, your families, and this

wonderful staff. This is a great place to work, and I thank

you for sending such terrific students to us! Enjoy a

Happy Thanksgiving!

National Geography Bee

arren Elementary School fourth and fifth

graders will be participating in the National

Geography Bee this year. Each year

thousands of schools in the United States participate in

the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared

by the National Geographic Society. The contest is

designed to encourage teachers to include geography in

their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject,

and increase public awareness about geography.

Interested fourth and fifth graders will participate in the

preliminary round of the Geography Bee in their

classrooms in December. The top five scorers from

fourth grade will join the top five fifth graders to advance

to the final round competition held in January. Students

who would like to prepare for the Bee should visit the

National Geographic website for information and sample

questions.

(http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geobee) You can

also download the “National Geographic GeoBee

Challenge” app and checkout the National Geographic

Bee Official Study Guide from our school library.

News from the PTA

appy fall, Warren Families! The PTA would

like to extend a huge thank you to all families

who helped make the Fall Festival such a

success! From food and silent auction

donations to volunteers, we appreciate all of your help.

We had an overwhelming response from all of our

families, which reminded us why Warren is such a great

school. It was a terrific night and a fun way to kick off

the school year.

We are hard at work planning more fun events for your

children and your families. Trunk or Treat will take

place on October 30th and we couldn’t make that happen

without our amazing faculty. It should be a great night.

The Holiday Shop is coming to Warren again from

December 9th - December 12th—details will be coming

home in the next few weeks. Mark your calendars for

Friday, January 30th for Pizza BINGO night, always a fun

family event!

We’d love to have you join us at our next meeting;

Tuesday, November 11th at 7:30 p.m. in the

Library…everyone is welcome! If you’d like to join the

PTA and haven’t had a chance to yet, membership

envelopes are available in the Main Office.

Hope to see you soon!

BALTIMORE COUNTY FIRE

DEPARTMENT’S ANNUAL POSTER

CONTEST

very year, Warren Elementary 3rd Grade students

participate in this important Fire Safety Poster

Contest. Congratulations to the following 3rd

grade students for having their poster chosen to

represent our school:

Jimmy Jecelin

Laila Hunt

Gibril Williams

Great job friends!

Mrs. Seitz

Acceptance-

Character Trait of the month for November

cceptance is the word we use to describe

respecting and appreciating all people, no matter

what about them might be different from

ourselves. Sometimes we can get stuck in a rut of being

friends with and being with the same people over and

over again. By ‘Mixing it up’ and spending time with new

people, getting to know a person from a different culture,

race, gender or perspective, we grow personally and

make the world a better place.

Please model acceptance of others for your child by accepting others and getting to know new people yourselves! We will be encouraging everyone to get along here at school by asking children to cooperate and accept each other!

Magnet School Update

agnet school applications were distributed to all Pre-K and 5th grade students at the beginning of September. If you are interested in applying to a magnet school, you must

submit the application and a copy of your first quarter report card to the Office of Magnet Programs by November 25th. Information concerning the process to apply is in the magnet school application/brochure. There was a Magnet School Expo to showcase and answer questions about all Magnet School programs in Baltimore County on Saturday, Sept. 27th from 10 to 2 at the North Baltimore Plaza hotel. The flier with all the information about his Expo was distributed in the Tuesday folder on Sept. 9th. You can also find more information by going to http://www.bcps.org/OFFICES/omp/elementary/apply.asp. Please contact Mrs. Sherline if you have any questions or concerns about the magnet school application process.

“Kids Helping Kids” Food Drive

he student leadership team is still having the

“Kids helping Kids” food drive, to support the

Maryland Food Bank. As in the past, this food

feeds hungry families with children in Maryland. This

year they are especially in need of canned and boxed

food in all the major categories: meat and protein,

breads and cereals, dairy foods, fruits and vegetables.

Non-food items like diapers, toilet paper, and paper

plates and cups are also appreciated. Please do not

donate food in glass containers. The food drive was from

October 13th to October 31st. If you would like to donate

food after this date, it would still be accepted and

appreciated. The food is being collected in each

homeroom. There have been morning announcements

by the SLT members every morning. The students have

been doing a terrific job! We also picked the spirit days

for the year. They are:

Purple Ravens Fridays- every Friday in season

College Sweatshirt Day- Thursday, November 20th

Pajama Day- Friday, February 13th

Crazy Hair and Clothes Day- Friday, March 27th

Thank you,

Laura Sherline, School Counselor Student Leadership Team

School Store - Halloween Sale a Success

hank you to all our customers for making our sale

the lines grow. The coupons which the customers

received are good at any time at the school store.

supplies that we stock all the items included on the

original school supply list plus many more. Use the

school store to replenish pencils, paper, notebooks and

markers as well as the fun pencils and sharpeners. We

also have folders for reports, hole punches,

reinforcements, jumbo book covers and other hard to

find items.

Some other items we have are: Staplers with 500 staples ~ $2 Wallets $1.50 Key chains for backpacks ~$.50 to $1.50 Memo books and Journals ~$.35 to $2.50 Bracelets and rings ~$.25 to $1.75 We have many items for $.10 to $.25. Thank you for supporting the school store. We are open
