Cadillac unveiled the Cadillac V-Performance Academy driving experience at Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club near Las Vegas on Sept. 6. The two-day driver training program will be included in the purchase of any of Cadillac’s high-performance V-Series mod- els: 2017 Cadillac ATS-V Sedan, 2017 ATS-V Coupe and 2017 Cadillac CTS-V sedan, said Cadil- lac spokesman Steve Martin. Cadillac is the only luxury au- tomotive brand offering a two- day driver training with the pur- chase of a high-performance ve- hicle, Martin said. Customers will register online for the experience after taking delivery of a 2017 V- Series model. Since 2004, hundreds of stu- dents on Ford-sponsored teams in Formula SAE, Solar Car, SAE Super mileage and other series work to make their cars as aero- dynamically efficient as possible, said Ford spokeswoman Deeptie Sethi. They aim for perfection – striv- ing to be the fastest and the best, said Erik Stancato, a Ford vehicle architecture-vehicle integration engineer. Stancato formerly cap- tained his Formula SAE team at the University of Michigan-Dear- born. Along their journey, Ford engineers help them refine their craft in one of the company’s world-class wind tunnels. Ford has been inspiring and mentoring the next generation of dedicated student racers for more than a decade, offering the time and expertise of its engi- neers and allowing the teams to put their cars to the test in its tunnel facilities in Allen Park, Deeptie said. An automotive wind tunnel generates a controlled stream of fast-moving air, simulating real- world conditions to allow aero- dynamic development in vehi- cles. Ford’s wind tunnel, Deeptie said, is particularly sophisticated, pro- viding both aerodynamic and aeroacoustic testing in a wide va- riety of environmental conditions for the company’s diverse lineup of both current and future vehi- cles. (AP) – Michi-gan would no longer require thatsomeone be inside a self-drivingcar while testing it on publicroads under legislation passedunanimously Sept. 7 by the stateSenate, where backers touted themeasures as necessary to keepthe U.S. auto industry’s homestate ahead of the curve on rap-idly advancing technology.The measures, which are on

track for final legislative ap-proval by year’s end and is sup-ported by Republican Gov. RickSnyder, would end a requirementthat a researcher be present in-side an autonomous test vehicle.The researcher would have to“promptly’’ take control of itsmovements if necessary, or thevehicle would have to be able tostop or slow on its own.

Ford’s wind tunnel.“In a book, you can learn the

basics and lay the groundworkto make design choices,” Rujansaid. “But until you can actuallyapply that, and know you’re do-ing it the right way, it’s hard tomake those choices.”In May 2015, the U-M Dearborn

team placed 8th out of 120 col-lege teams at the Michigan Inter-national Speedway, competingagainst teams from around theworld, Deeptie said.However, the results can be

seen long before the race begins.Tristan MacKethan, a junior andco-aerodynamic lead for FormulaSAE’s MRacing at the Universityof Michigan-Ann Arbor, said histeam was able to optimize down-force by 24 percent as a result ofan eight-hour session in the tun-nel.Downforce improves traction

and cornering abilities, both im-portant factors in racing. Ulti-mately, this should lead to fasterlap times on the track.MacKethan, interning at Ford

this summer in the autonomousvehicle platform group, is part ofa growing community of recruitsfrom the program, Deeptie said.Competing on a student team

offers benefits even after college,said Joe Hendrickson, whojoined Ford as a systems engi-neer soon after graduating fromthe University of Michigan-AnnArbor in 2015.He served as captain of his For-

mula SAE team his senior year.“With this program, you’re us-

DETROIT (AP) – A Volkswagenengineer has pleaded guilty toone count of conspiracy in thecompany's emissions cheatingscandal and has agreed to coop-erate in the widening criminal in-vestigation.James Robert Liang, 62, of

Newberry Park, Calif., enteredthe plea Sept. 9 in U.S. DistrictCourt in Detroit to one count ofconspiracy to defraud the gov-ernment through wire fraud.Volkswagen has admitted to in-

stalling software on about 500,0002-liter diesel engines in VW andAudimodels in the U.S. that turnedpollution controls on during gov-ernment tests and turned them offwhile on the road. The Environ-mental Protection Agency foundthat the cars emitted up to 40times the legal limit for nitrogenoxide.Liang was indicted in June on

one count of conspiracy to com-mit wire fraud and another countof violating the Clean Air Act. Heallegedly helped design the com-puter software that cheated ondiesel emissions tests. The in-dictment alleges Liang and un-named co-conspirators resortedto using the cheating software af-ter realizing the cars couldn'tboth meet consumer expecta-tions for performance and satisfyU.S. emissions standards.Liang pleaded guilty to the

conspiracy charge the morningof Sept. 9 before Judge Sean Cox.He will be sentenced on Jan. 11.The judge said that sentencingguidelines call for Liang to servefive years in prison.The cooperation of Liang, who

began work in Wolfsburg, Ger-many, and also worked in theU.S., is a breakthrough in the Jus-tice Department's investigation.

model, engineers compared re-gen performance on a testing cy-cle that simulated heavy stop-and-go traffic in Drive and anoth-er using one-pedal driving whilein Low and also the Regen on De-mand paddle, Tavel said. The en-gineers found that the one-pedaldriving can add up to 5 percentof range to the Bolt EV.During interviews with Chevro-

to be very popular with GM em-ployees who worked in the NewCenter Area.“After the GM Tech Center

opened in 1956,” Springer said,“employees began to migratefrom the headquarters in theNew Center area to the TechCenter, but work would requiresome to visit headquarters, andwhen they would go back to War-ren, they would bring copies ofthe New Center News with them.”This led to a desire for a simi-

lar newspaper for people at theTech Center.“Back in 1976, the GM Tech

Center was the largest private re-search park in the world,”Springer said. “The motto for thesite was ‘Where Today Meets To-morrow.’ And at that time manyof the people who worked at theTech Center purchased homes inthe surrounding area.”That made starting a new paper

a natural idea, mirroring the samedynamic that had existed in the

New Center Area, Springer added.Thus the Tech Center News was

formed. And the newspaper hasbeen continuously published forthe last 40 years [in print].This week marks that anniver-

sary with the beginning of Volume41, as can be seen in the banneron page one.“There was a man named Mert

Carpenter, who was known as ‘Mr.Tech Center’ back in the 1970s,”according to Springer.Carpenter was director of the

General Motors Service Section,the unit that oversaw the mainte-nance of the Tech Center groundsand facilities at the time.“He knew virtually everything

there was to know about the TechCenter, from its inception,”Springer said. “His insights wereinvaluable at the time.”Eero Saarinen was the original

designer of the GM Tech Centerand his work was honored by theU.S. Department of the Interior in2014, when the National Park Serv-ice granted the Tech Center a Na-tional Historic Landmark status.

DETROIT (AP) – General Mo-tors Co. has settled two federalcourt cases related to its defec-tive ignition switches, but its le-gal troubles stemming from theswitches are far from over.GM settled the cases for an

undisclosed amount, plaintiffs’attorney Bob Hilliard said Sept.5. In both cases, the plaintiffssaid they sustained serious in-juries when the air bags in theirvehicles didn’t deploy. GM hashas said that ignition switches inolder cars could fall out of posi-tion without warning and shut offthe engine and air bags.The cases are among several

so-called “bellwether’’trials thatare testing the legal boundariesof hundreds of claims againstGM. So far this year, one federalbellwether case was dropped be-fore trial, GM won two, and threehave been settled. Three morefederal cases are scheduled to beheard next year, and one isscheduled for January 2018, GMspokesman Jim Cain said.GM also has been trying some

bellwether cases at the state lev-el. In one of those cases, a Texasjury decided last month that aGM ignition switch wasn’t toblame for a 2011 fatal crash.GM knew about problems with

the switches for more than adecade before it finally recalled2.6 million small cars worldwidein 2014 to replace the defectiveswitches. The switches are re-sponsible for at least 124 deathsand 275 injuries, according to avictims’ fund set up by GM andadministered by attorney Ken-neth Feinberg.GM has paid nearly $875 mil-

lion to settle death and injuryclaims, including $600 millionfrom Feinberg’s fund and $275million to settle 1,385 separate

claims. It also has paid $300 mil-lion to settle shareholder law-suits. But many others are pursu-ing their claims in court.Carl Tobias, a law professor at

the University of Richmond, saidthat so far GM seems to be will-ing to try the weaker plaintiffs’cases but settle the ones that arestronger. But the company has along way to go before it resolvesall of the cases, he said.In addition to the cases al-

ready scheduled, GM could befacing lawsuits from victimswhose alleged injuries occurredbefore GM’s 2009 bankruptcy. InJuly, a U.S. appeals court ruledthat GM’s bankruptcy can’tshield the company from thoselawsuits. GM is appealing thatruling. Hilliard said at least 133pre-bankruptcy cases could bebrought against the automaker.Hilliard said the settlements

In the firstcase, Stephanie Cockram wasdriving her 2006 ChevroletCobalt home from a friend’shouse in Virginia on June 28,2011, when she lost control ofher car and hit a stone wall. Herair bags didn’t deploy. Cockramsuffered a closed head injury,broken jaw and broken hip.In the second case, Amy

Norville lost control of her 2003Saturn Ion in Kentucky on Nov.21, 2013, when she swerved toavoid hitting a deer. Norvillecouldn’t regain control of her ve-hicle and crashed into a tree, butthe air bags didn’t deploy.Norville broke her sternum andsuffered multiple neck fractures.

LEXINGTON, Tenn. (AP) – Au-tomotive supplier Johnson Con-trols plans to phase out 290 jobsover the next two years as thecompany ends production at itsLexington plant in Tennessee.

Spokeswoman Mary Kay Do-dero tells The Jackson Sun thatthe company plans to transitionthe facility from manufacturingto a service center or ware-house.

Lexington Mayor David Jowerssaid that products made at theLexington plant had to beshipped to be painted before be-ing returned to the facility, whileanother Johnson Controls plantin Alabama is able to do the man-ufacturing and painting in-house.

The decision to end manufac-turing in Lexington comes asJohnson Controls prepares tospin off its automotive businessinto an independent companycalled Adient on Oct. 31.
