Dear Parents and Caregivers, Walk safe to school day On Friday 18th May, Warrimoo Public School participated in a national Walk Safely to School Day. This event encourages all Primary School children and families to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety and health with the important message of Active Kids are Healthy Kids. I wish to thank all the students and families who joined the staff on the day. We had an overwhelming response with many of our community participating in this enjoyable event on a glorious morning that all participants enjoyed. Thank you to the staff who attended and supervised the walk.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge Students and staff of Warrimoo Public School will be participating in the Premier’s Sporting Challenge commencing in Week 6 of Term 2 and concluding in Week 5 of Term 3. Students are encouraged to participate in as much physical activity as possible. Once a day, students will have the opportunity to record and track their results at school. At the conclusion of the 10 week period individual performance results will be uploaded to the Premier’s Sporting Challenge website by staff and certificates forwarded back to our school for distribution. At Warrimoo Public School we encourage all students to live a healthy and active life. I would appreciate you sharing this message with your children at home. Cross Country Carnival I wish to thank and acknowledge the amazing efforts and great sportsmanship of all the students who attended the District Cross Country event last Friday. I also wish to thank Mr Hodgson and Mrs McCarthy who attended and supported the students on the day and the magnificent support from our parents who assisted with transportation and made up our cheer squad. Congratulations to all participants!

National Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day At Warrimoo Public School we will recognise National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week. Students will create a five-petal native flower throughout Week 5. We will create a Sorry Wall displaying the commemorative flowers. The Native Hibiscus was adopted because it is found widely across Australia and it is a survivor. Its colour denotes compassion and spiritual healing. Warrimoo Public School will be participating in NAIDOC Week celebrations with Blaxland East Public School in Week 2 of Term 3 (2nd August). We look forward to sharing a magnificent Aboriginal cultural day. Further information will be forwarded home as we move closer to this date. Staff Assessment and Reporting Days This time of year as always teachers and students are heavily involved in assessments to report on student progress and individual student learning goals. Teachers have been working hard in their stage meetings each week sharing work samples and assessments to ensure there is consistency amongst grade distributions. I have allocated all teachers additional release from class, across Week 5, to gather and evaluate assessment data in an in-depth manner. Semester 1 reports will be sent home on the last Friday of week 9 of this term (28th June). Formal Parent-Teacher Interviews will be taking place in the last week of this term (Tuesday 2nd July). A note will be coming home in the next few weeks, outlining our process and booking system for parent-teacher interviews. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress, please make contact with your child’s teacher to make a time to speak with them. NAPLAN Online 2019 I wish to acknowledge the efforts of all our Year 3 and Year 5 students who completed NAPLAN last week. Thank you also to our teachers Mrs Harris, Mr Hodgson and Mr Dewhurst for their support and organisation of the assessment process. As I am certain you have heard in the media that there were nationwide disruptions throughout several of the assessments, however our students were extremely settled and displayed responsible working habits over the NAPLAN period. Great work Warrimoo Public School!

EARN AND LEARN Warrimoo Public School has signed up for the Woolworths Earn and Learn program for 2019. By collecting the Earn and Learn stickers when you do your shopping our school benefits by getting additional resources depending on the amount of stickers we collect. You can bring the stickers to the office and there is a Warrimoo Public School Earn and Learn box in Woolworths at Lennox Shopping Village in Emu Plains. Don’t forget to ask for your Earn and Learn stickers at the checkout when you do your grocery shopping!

Federal Election On Saturday 18th May our school hosted the 2019 Federal Election. I would like to sincerely thank the many volunteers who ran the BBQ, coffee station and cake stall and made the delicious cake stall treats to be sold. I feel extremely proud and honoured to work with such an engaged and supportive community.

Lockdown Drill – Week 4 Postponed I postponed our lockdown drill in Week 4 due to the substantial impact of the smoke due to Hazard Reduction burning within the Blue Mountains. The purpose of these drills are to inform, prepare and practice the procedures, not to raise anxiety levels amongst the students. Following the return of our Stage 3 students from camp we will reschedule this drill. Stage 3 Camp On Monday morning of this week our Stage 3 students, Mrs Harris, Mr Hodgson and Mrs Bruhn departed our school for an exciting adventure to ‘The Tops’ camp. I was fortunate to visit the group on Monday afternoon and evening to share some activities and dinner with them. We look forward to welcoming them back on Wednesday afternoon to hear about all their exciting and enjoyable experiences.

6/5H have investigated: How strong are paper towels?

The students of 6/5H have been using inquiry-based learning in Science to pose questions and then research to

locate authentic knowledge to find solutions or answers.

We have been looking at the tensile strength of paper towels to find out if it is worth paying more money for

expensive brands in paper towels.

Our finding were quite mixed when measuring the weight a dry paper towel could hold before stress caused a

fracture or tear in the paper. However, once the paper towels were wet and the experiment was repeated the

findings were quite clear. Handee paper towels had a tensil strength that was far greater than Sorbent or Coles

brand. We have concluded that if you use your paper towels on wet surfaces then it is worth paying more for the

expensive brands.

SRC – STEWART HOUSE Thank you to all the students who participated in our “Happy Day” fundraiser for Stewart House. Warrimoo, as a school, you raised an amazing $300 for this worthy cause. The donation of clothing was also exceptional. The bags filled the disabled toilet with barely room to move. Thank you again for your generosity. SRC
