Students who worked hard in the classroom all year were recognized and honored at the annual Secondary Honors Night, Thursday, May 7 at Living Word Church.

Students received classroom awards which are given to the student or students with the highest grade or to the most pas-sionate person about that specific subject. Some silly awards were also given such as the Hooligan of Heart award by Miss Reynolds who recognized Hannah Lawrence for her academic ability and character throughout the year while still having fun in class.

Besides classroom awards, there were also Scholars Bowl, Honor Roll, Honor Society, Cindy Blanchard Award, Strong Heart, Strong Spirit, AMC awards and scholarships.

Scholar Bowl awards were given to all senior high and junior high Scholars Bowl participants. Honor Roll certificates were given to students who had at least a 3.0 GPA with no more than one C. Honor Society is for high school students who had a 3.75 GPA and did an interview about leadership and community service.

The Cindy Blanchard award recognizes someone who has been an academic encourager and was given to Jan Coles and Leigh White. The Strong Heart Award is voted on by stu-dents for athletes who showed Christ in their everyday life for both junior high and high school. Junior high winners were Dani Dillon and Benjamin Grubbs. Senior high winners were Chaustin Root and Ashlyn Shultz. Green Walkby M. El-Aasar

Most students do not have to walk four miles to earn funds for their school. But on May 2, students did just that at the annual Green Walk.

The Green Walk was not only a way students could partici-pate in the fundraising process but also a time of celebration at City Park with food and games. These games included a watermel-on eating race, a watermelon rind throwing contest, a sunflow-er seed spitting contest and a water and sponge relay.

During the games, students were divided into four teams: red, yellow, green and blue. The red team placed fourth, the green team third, the yellow team second and the blue team first.

When the students weren’t playing the games they were either sitting and talking, playing sand volleyball, climbing trees, or throwing a Frisbee around.

After all the students went back to the school, they all cele-brated with Ice Pops and a game of Ultimate Frisbee.

A night of Disneyby L. Livnille

If you’re stressed, it’s fine music we suggest. The sounds of Disney were heard in the gym the evening of April 30, by the secondary students. The concert began with three non-Disney songs by the band, which had been rehearsed before the Dis-ney concert idea had been confirmed.

The Disney songs were from the movies “Beauty and the Beast,” “Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid,” “Mulan,” “Tan-gled,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Frozen,” “Hercules,” “Alad-din,” “Hunchback of Notre Dame” and “Prince of Egypt.”

During the first song, “Be Our Guest,” choir members served brownies to welcome guests to our school. Guests then enjoyed brownies while the band performed a Disney medley which included “Never Smile at a Crocodile,” “Supercalifra-gilisticexpialidocious,” “Bare Necessities,” “Under the Sea,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Be our Guest,” “Friend Like Me,” “A Whole New World,” “This Land,” “Circle of Life,” “Can You Feel the Love Tonight?” and “Colors of the Wind.”

Students had the option of singing a Disney song as a solo, or sing a solo part with the choir. Solo songs included “Part of Your World,” done by Jessica Crespino, “Go the Distance,” by

Ashlyn Shultz, “Friend Like Me,” by Shaiann Wyatt, and “God Help the Outcasts,” also by Ashlyn Shultz. Other students sang duets of their choice. These included “I See the Light,” by Haylei Giersch and Khalil Smith, and “A Whole New World,” by Kelsey Warren and Chaustin Root.

Future teacherBy J. White

Christy Love really loves work-ing with young kids. She was a teacher’s aide for Mrs. Davis last year and two years ago. She plans to attend Emporia State University and study elemen-tary education. She really enjoyed helping the children learn and grow in Christ.

Christy has been going to New Hope Church for 14 years and her favorite Bible story is Esther because she is a princess. She has been on missions trips through Fusion, her youth group.

She has only lived in Kansas, but has traveled to Florida, Alabama, Texas, Missouri and Colorado. In her free time she likes knitting and photography. Christy also enjoys cooking; her favorite thing to cook is seven layer bars.

Katie strives for Christby M. El-Aasar

Katie Warren wants people to strive, to strive for their relationship with Christ and to strive to learn for the rest of their lives, especially to go out into the community to help people.

She has attended the school for 13 years since PreK, when she started as a three year old. Her mom Mrs. Linda Warren is the fourth grade teacher, and Katie is a very familiar face around that room. “I like to stop in and say hi if i need a signature, money. I see them on a daily basis,” Katie said.

When it comes to being a senior, most seniors think they have seniority, but Katie has a different perspective on being a senior. “I didn’t think of myself as above the rest,” she com-mented.

She also has big plans for her future life, going to Kansas State University and then getting into medical missions, when doctors go to foreign countries for disaster relief and help give people the medical attention they need.

But Katie has a spin on the idea. “I would like to share the gospel with the people in the disaster and really get to know them,” she said.

She chose Kansas State University because it is here in Manhattan, and she can still continue going to her church, University Christian Church. She also wants to keep in touch

with friends and family, which is easier if she goes to Kansas State. “I like the campus and sports, I get seven free credit hours because my dad works there and that makes it afford-able.” She hasn’t been offered any scholarships yet, but she plans on working for one over the summer.

She wants to pursue acting in college, but she doesn’t know if she will. But, if she does then she wants to do both sides of acting, the comedic side the type of acting where the audience has a light hearted think to enjoy, and the serious side of act-ing to get the audience thinking about what they are watching.

One of Katie’s favorite memories is sports especially, when she would ask if Coach K. could stretch her. And then Coach K. would say, “feel the magic,” and Katie would definitely feel the magic. Feeling the magic is feeling the burn.

Another of her memories when she was in Mrs. Mullin’s second grade class and they would have a historical biblical meal, similar to the one Jesus had, but the unique thing was that the boys sopped them.

Katie’s favorite superhero is Batman, because he has pain in his life, it does consume him, but he puts that aside to help people in need. He still deals with the pain but he continues with life. “That is how Christians should act in their walk, we can help people even when we have our pain.” she points out. “Batman strives for something bigger than himself and that is what we as Christians should do,” she commented.

If Katie were Batman she would fight the Joker, because he is bad, he causes chaos in people’s lives, he doesn’t care and he needs to be stopped.

Although Katie will be leaving, she is glad and ready for college, “ I will be independent, but it will be weird not going here though I will be back to visit,” she said. “This school has prepared me biblically and academically.”

Music renaissance man By L. Linville

He’s a drummer, singer, and producer: when it comes to music Chaustin Root does it all. In fact, Mr. Carter awarded him a special Music Renaissance Man award at Honors Night for his participation and leading in Praise Band, Choir and Band.

Chaustin was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and has been to Greece, Italy, Germany and Haiti. When asked about an interesting thing about him, he said, “I like to help people out.”

He attends Westview church and likes to work out outside of school. The most exciting moment of his life was when his dad adopted him. He owns a few different pets such as a cat, two dogs, and two fish.

His favorite type of car is a Mazda RX8. A few others of his favorite things are: his favorite color is lime green, his favorite food is tacos, and his favorite TV show is Daredevils.

After high school, Chaustin plans to attend Vincennes Uni-versity in Indiana and eventually pursue his dream of becom-ing an audio engineer.

Sophieby E. Dunaway

Speed Racer, Mary Kate, Speed Demon; these are all nicknames for Sophie Doolittle.

After moving to the US from China, Sophie has gone through 13 years of school in 10 years and is now a senior. Although it was another year for her, she still found some difficulty in keeping her grades up and trying to balance between college and high school. Once she graduates, she plans to go to Cloud Community College and then to Emporia State. Her favorite memory of school is Banquet, especially the food. Her memories of

China are few in number and sad.“It’s not very pretty. I remember a white room with no win-

dows. You couldn’t go downstairs or outside,” she said. She was forced to eat a gross pink rice soup. In the winter,

she had to wear so many layers of clothes that it was as if she was a ball because there was no heater. She had no schooling and only knew 1+1 and 1+2. Despite her bad memories of China, she is learning Chinese.

“If Asian people come to my town, I want to be able to talk to them,” she said.

Her favorite color is red, she loves spicy and Chinese foods and she wants to travel the world. One interesting thing about her is she has a secret Chinese name. However, it will remain a secret even through graduation. She wants to leave behind a legacy for disabled people.

“I want to prove that disabled people are smart too,” she said.

Egg sittingby J. White

The Interpersonal Relationships (IR) class, consisting of all freshmen and sophomores had an EGGcellent time with their projects. The assignment was to have eggs/children and take care of them. They got points taken off for dropping their egg, leaving it alone somewhere, etc.

Many participating students said it was frustrating some-times, but overall, they liked it. There were names such as Oliver James, Juan, CJ, Connor, Kyle, Eric and Megan. It was a good lesson to learn.

Freshman Kelsey Warren said, “I felt like it intensified my responsibilities and I realized how hard it is to take care of children.”

Some said the regulations were a bit extreme, but over-all students took good responsibility over their eggs. Some students said that they have been attached to their eggs, and it was hard for them to throw their eggs away after the project was done.

The artistic, computer guy

by A. EllweinDerek Pockrandt, a six-year

attendee of FHCS, is graduating and plans to go to K-State with plans to study computer cience, mathematics and possibly lead others to Christ.

Derek plans to keep in touch with Jesus by joining some sort of campus small group, such as Cru.

Derek’s interests include, computers, programming, music and art. He was the only painting student this year and his final project showed the merging of nature and technology.

His favorite year was 10th grade and is very well excited to move on, yet not excited to leave. As he is moving forward, we can all remember his Christlike example and follow in his footsteps by following Christ.

The Golf team, with one veteran (Derek), made a lot of improvements since the beginning of the season. Mr. Carter as the coach, managed to squeeze in six more players to the team. Sara, Amanda, Joey, Christian, Kaden, and Austin all contributed to the essence of the golf team.

Disney days are here again by M. El-Aasar

“Its a guest it’s a guest well sakes alive will I be blessed!” sang Lily Linville during the Disney concert performed by sec-ondary music students April 30. Specific songs included:

“Be our guest”: Jessica as Lumiere did amazing. She pro-nounced the vowels and the French words in the song accu-rately. Lily was a very good Mrs. Potts; she sang her heart out into her solo and it was shown to the audience.

“Hakuna Matata”: Benjamin was Timon, Jordan was Pumba, and Dani was Simba. While OK, this could have been better. Some of the chorus weren't singing, and the soloists could have been a little better.

“Under the Sea”: Betsy was Sebastian, and Lily was Ariel. This song was OK as well, the soloist was a little high but Betsy managed to keep it cool during the song. Sam and Joey who sang low for their one line solo did pretty well although the microphones were off.

“Make a Man out of You”: Ashlyn was Shang, Hannah was Mulan, Betsy was Mushu, Matt was Chang Po, Elijah was Yow, and Jordan was Ling. This song was one of the better ones, the army in the back was not unified but towards the end we got unified just like in the movie. Hannah went all for it by diving on her knees to show to the audience who she was, and it was amazing.

“Kiss the Girl”: Betsy was Sebastian, Chastin was Eric, and Katie was Ariel. This song was really cute! Betsy did a much better job in “Kiss the Girl” than “Under the Sea.” The high schoolers made this very mature sound behind Betsy’s singing which was pleasing to the ear as a whole.

“A Whole New World”: Chaustin was Aladdin, and Kelsey was Jasmine. This song was also really cute. Students parad-ing artifacts made by the junior high art class behind Chaustin and Kelsey was the funnest part of the song.

“You’ll Never Have a Friend Like Me”: Shaiann was the Genie, and Chaustin was Aladdin. Shaiann did very well being the genie. it was fun to see her control the dancer on either side of her who were Khalil and Kelsey, and Hannah and Haylei. Hannah seemed to really enjoy herself as she danced.

“At Last I see the Light”: Khalil was Flynn, and Haylei was Rapunzel. This song was just about the cutest one in the show. It was very romantic and both of them did phenomenal. They both showed that they cared about what they were singing.

“I Can Go the Distance”: Ashlyn as Hercules did a solo and she did OK. She forgot about half the song but most of the people who knew the song didn't notice and that is an amazing thing.

“Part of Your World”: Jessica as Ariel did an amazing job. She sang a solo for two minutes and sounded absolutely beau-tiful!

“God Help the Outcasts”: Ashlyn as Esmeralda was very good and she showed how much she cared about this song. My favorite part of this song was when the rest of the high school-ers went in twos to pray before the altar made by the junior

high art class. The band did really well, my favorite songs were “Pirates of

the Caribbean,” “The Star Wars Medley” and the “Disney Song Medley.” As the listener you could tell which song was going next and how well they did.

Personally I wish we could have done some villain songs such as “Poor Unfortunate Souls” from “The Little Mermaid,” “Cruella de Vil” from “101 Dalmations,” and “Savages” from “Pocahontas,” but over all the Disney concert was a success.

Jesus is Everything by.E. Dunaway

The Everything Skit was performed in chapel May 6. Seven secondary students had practiced for about a month with Ms. Reynolds before their final presentation for the entire second-ary side. Chaustin Root played the part of Jesus, Austin Ell-wein the boyfriend, Josh Ward was money, Hannah Lawrence was the drunk girl, Niamh Coughlin was a model and Danielle Dillon was death. Katie Warren was the main girl who was be-ing tempted. The skit was performed to the song “Everything” by Lifehouse.

“They all did phenomenal because they worked really hard and many of them hadn’t seen it before rehearsal. They all improved leaps and bounds before we did it,” said Miss Reyn-olds.

The skit told the story of a girl being given life by Jesus and then she gets tempted by boys, money, alcohol, image, self-harm and suicide. The girl then tries to return to Jesus but is held back by her sins. Jesus then comes in and rescues her and she returns to His arms.

“It was fun to do and I was sad when it was all over. It was very powerful and at first I was scared and moved at the same time. I hope our performance moved others.” said Austin.

Chaustin as Jesus protects Katie from sins in her past.
