The Australian and Victorian governments are upgrading the Warrnambool line to give passengers more frequent and reliable services.

The $1.75 billion Regional Rail Revival will upgrade every regional passenger train line in Victoria, creating over 1,000 jobs.

The Warrnambool Line Upgrade will lead to more services and better reliability, helping pave the way for VLocity trains to run to Warrnambool for the first time.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

The $114 million Warrnambool Line Upgrade includes:

• building a new crossing loop

• signalling upgrades between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool

• level crossing and pedestrian crossing upgrades

• new train stabling facilities at Warrnambool.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Warrnambool’s population is forecast to grow by 30 per cent in the next 20 years.

The Warrnambool Line Upgrade will allow for a fifth daily return service between Warrnambool and Melbourne, and help pave the way for VLocity trains on the line.

A new crossing loop on the line will make it easier for trains to pass each other, which helps services recover from unexpected delays more quickly.

Upgrades to level crossings along the line will make crossings safer for motorists and trains.

The upgraded line will support rail freight and allow export products such as meat and dairy to be moved more quickly and reliably to the Port of Melbourne, benefitting the local economy.

Regional Rail Revival will provide opportunities for local suppliers to create jobs, develop industry skills and grow local economies, through the Victorian Government’s Local Jobs First - Victorian Industry Participation Policy (VIPP).

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?

The Warrnambool Line Upgrade is being delivered by Rail Projects Victoria (RPV), on behalf of the Victorian Government.

NEXT STEPS

We will start with site investigations, including environmental assessments, traffic and noise monitoring, soil and rock testing and locating underground services. Passengers may notice more activity near the rail line as we gather this information to help the design and planning process.

We will notify the community of any disruption via information sessions, letterbox drops, emails, advertising, website updates, social media and station pop-ups.

OTHER IMPROVEMENTS

Extra services on the Warrnambool line were rolled out in January 2017 – the first new services on the line for more than a decade. There are now four return trains to Melbourne each weekday and three return trains on Saturdays and Sundays.

Since August 2017, more weekday Warrnambool trains now run express through stations between Geelong and Footscray, creating a more comfortable journey.

The Victorian Government has upgraded 22 level crossings between Geelong and Warrnambool.

A business case for the full duplication of the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds corridor has been submitted to Infrastructure Australia for assessment following the completion of the $4 million South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Planning Project

REGIONAL RAIL REVIVAL

The $1.75 billion Regional Rail Revival is a joint initiative of the Australian and Victorian governments and will upgrade stations, signalling and track across Victoria.
