THE PASSING OF A MENTIOR, PEER AND FRIEND

It is with great sadness that we learnt last week of the passing of Denis O’Connell. DOC, as

he was affectionately known at the College, was a great friend and colleague to many of

our staff. He was one of the founding Assistant Principals of Warrnambool College and

tirelessly led the school community over many years. We all grieve his death and wish to

offer our sincerest condolences to his family, many of whom are still intimately connected to

our school. Rest in peace DOC.

THE BULLANTS ACADEMIES CONTINUE TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS

Our academies certainly have been busy during the last couple of months. We have had

many successful teams win their way through to State quarter finals and State finals. We

have over 50% of students involved in our sporting academies and they are participating in

lunchtime training sessions, trips to tour professional porting team’s facilities, guest

presenters and sporting carnivals.

Our academies are a wonderful way to meet new students and participate in a range of

sports; you don’t have to be the best in the sport but if you come with a willingness to learn

and try your best then you will have a great time. The good thing is that you can be a

member of more than one academy.

Please speak with the following staff members about any of our academies;

Soccer – Luke Howlett

AFL – Danny Finn and Adam Matheson

Hockey – Mark O’Sullivan

Netball – Lisa Douglas

Open Water Swimming – Rob Dart

Cricket – Gault McCluggage and Ewen Burt

Tennis – Tessa Halloran (new academy opening soon)

2015 IMMUNISATION PROGRAM

The next cycle is for all Year 7 students on Tuesday 15th September. This year is a transition

year with all Year 7-10 students being immunised; next year it will only be Year 7 students.

PLACES TO BE DURING THE WINTER MONTHS

The weather is still very unpredictable and cold so we are looking to offer some lunchtime

activities to keep our students out of the rain/wind. Keep an eye on the student bulletin/

news feed on Compass for lunchtime activities. Belfast and Flagstaff have upcoming events

during the next two weeks. We have made changes to our school uniform to

accommodate a new outer shell jacket to keep the students warm; we have already sold

nearly 500 jackets!

STUDENT DROP OFF ZONES

Could all families please be careful around school drop off/pick up zones. The main drop

off area is at the front of the school however some families are using the car park near the

school gymnasium to drop their child/children off. Please avoid using the bus loop as this

area is allocated specifically for buses to drop off/pick up students. If cars enter this space

then it becomes very unsafe for the buses to reverse out of their parking bays.

Students should use the footpaths near the bus exchange and not walk across the road as

there are buses entering and leaving this area before and after school.

HOUSE REPORTS

Our student leaders have put in an

almighty effort in preparations for and

during our fundraising day for the

Francis Foundation, a Winter

Wonderland.

We were fortunate enough to do a filmed interview with Joan Grace OAM who is one of the founding

members of the Francis Foundation. Bella Rantall, Rachael Wilkes and Raven Hancock were then able

to disseminate awareness in tutorials across the school about the important role the foundation has in

the Warrnambool and surrounding community providing accommodation and support to those with

mental health issues. With Brierley closing down this has become very important in providing a family

based supportive atmosphere to reintegrating to the Warrnambool community.

On the day Hopkins students set up and ran a very

popular doughnut machine, sold frog in ponds,

baked potatoes, spiders, hot chocolates and cold

drinks. The schools rock band, supported by our very

own Jackson Greene, played some classic hits

throughout lunchtime, to the delight of the large

crowd watching on.

A great atmosphere for a great local cause. Hopkins

House are very proud of the fundraising efforts thus

far, with $1492.17 profit made on the day.

A big hello to all our Merri Families,

The highlight for Merri over last term was our annual Bake Sale. This is a fantastic event that is

run as part of our philanthropic commitment to fundraise for our chosen charity The

Taksenkangbloung Community Centre in Cambodia. The day was a complete success raising $1,700.

This amount was raised on the back of donations of baked goods, ice-cream and soft drinks donated by

the students, teachers and families of Merri so a very THANK YOU to all those that contributed. As part of our

newly established Tute Cup the Merri Student Leaders had decided to incorporate the contributions by

students as part of the competition. The result was unprecedented as we received a never before seen

amount of cakes, slices, biscuits, lamingtons, and sugar inspired creations!

T h e f i g u r e r a i s e w a s a w e l c o m e d

surprise and source of inspiration for our students. With

the money raised we have been able to pay off the

community centres ‘School Tuk Tuk’. This mighty

vehicle transports children of the Taksen village to and

from school each day. The new vehicle is much safer

than the old vehicle and means 10 more students

than previously can travel to school each day. Our

Student Leaders have certainly been encouraged by

the impact they have been able to make to the lives

of people across the world and have been inspired to

plan new enterprises that will make a difference—so

stay tuned for more Merri events!

As mentioned earlier, we have installed a new Tute Cup that will be awarded at the end of the year.

Points will be awarded to each tute on their participation, success and contribution in each of the House

Competitions. This is designed to give greater recognition to students that do take part and to spark a

little ‘friendly competition’ in house. The early results have been encouraging with a couple of Tutes

shining early. At this stage M1 and M7 look like the Tutes to beat as they have featured strongly across all

events, particularly with sporting side of things. That being said though, Ms Finnigan’s M6 blew the other

Tutes away with their contribution to the Bake Sale and could be in line for a charge home. At the

moment the points stand as:

Merri Continues.. A number of Merri students have been representing Warrnambool College in Public Speaking and their points will

be tallied once all competition as finished. Coming up though is the annual Arts Cup, an event in which we

traditionally feature strongly. There are a few students who have been busy polishing their acts, but there is still

plenty of time, so if you think your child has a talent the world should see, encourage them to sign up and get

involved!!

Just quick couple of recog-

nitions in term of staffing. This

term we welcome Anthea Raf-

ferty to Merri who has taken

over from Sean Taylor as M7

Tutor. Also, whilst Roxann Clapp

has been away on much de-

served leave Zacc Struth has

moved in as Assistant House

Leader. Despite being from

the highly dubious Belfast

House, Mr Struth is doing an

excellent job working with our

Merri students.

Finally, a big thank you to all parents and caregivers that have

been making contact with Tutors, Teachers and Leaders at school.

Whether it be about academic questions, wellbeing/health issues or

just a general catch up, we appreciate the open lines of

communication. If you do have any questions, queries or things you

would like to let us know about feel free to contact us via phone or

ideally through compass.

The Debating section of the Warrnambool Eisteddfod began in Week 3 of this term with an opening

night at King’s College for the senior teams. The two weeks of inter -school debating was held in the

King’s College auditorium. Senior dynamo team consisting of Declan Primmer, Gabby Good and Will

Bonney who won their debate and were awarded second overall in the senior section. Declan

Primmer was named Best Senior Debater. Declan, Gabby and Will also participated in impromptu

debating later in the week and gained another win there. This year we did not have any 9/10 debate

entries so we needed to hand over the 9/10 perpetual shield which we won last year. I am confident

we will field a number of teams in this section next year after the excellent debating skills exhibited by

our current year 8 students. The year 7 and 8 SEAL classes prepare debates as part of their English

curriculum. Each class entered 6 teams and an enjoyable and educational debating day was held for

each class. This year we also had four 7/8 teams who entered of their own volition. One of these teams

was successful in not only winning their debate but being the overall Best Debate team. There were 16

debates and 32 teams. The participants in this winning team were Grace Prigg, Ashlea Ferguson and

Chelsea Benter who were also assisted by Maddison Cook. The overall second place winner consisted

of SEAL team members Breanna Billing, Hannah Garner and Kayla Jewell .The Best Debater in this7/8

section was awarded to Grace Prigg who received a trophy. There were 96 young debaters so this is

an enormous achievement. Congratulations Grace! On Friday 14th at our celebration hot chip lunch,

all students will have seen their score sheet, received a participation certificate and will also have

earned points for their house which will contribute to the end of year Public Speaking Cup tally.

Upcoming events

In September Susan Malikof will compete in

Melbourne for the next round of the Legacy Junior

Public Speaking Award.

In house Public Speaking Showcase will be held in

Week 1 of term 4. There will be a new format this

year. More details to come shortly!

Hello all

It gives me great pleasure (and pride) to provide some details about our win yesterday.

Last year our boys (basically the same team) played Maribyrnong College and were defeated by over 20

goals. After a bit of a revving up to say this year would be different the boys started to plot the downfall of

our opponents.

PRESSURE PRESSURE and the PRESS was the result.

After a bright beginning with two early goals we fell into bad wet weather habits. Easy marks dropped and

poor kicking choices saw the momentum and scoreboard swing to Maribyrnong. Half time was an

opportunity to reset and discuss some basic things that we needed to be better at. We were two goals

down.....

The third quarter was a real arm wrestle with neither team putting any scoreboard pressure on (Isaac

Thomas with the only goal of the quarter); our plan had worked... The game was back on even terms.

AND THEN - what an amazing quarter of football. Players rose to the challenge. Some players who hadn't

found much of the football for the first three quarters lifted. We placed enormous pressure on the

opponents and made the most of our opportunities when they turned it over. A team lifting goal was kicked

by Jay Rantall and another followed by Bayley McGowen (thanks to the hard work from Tate Porter) and

we held a 7 point lead with 3 minutes to play. For the next few minutes the ball was in the opponents 50m

zone but we held strong. A strong mark and goal to Maribyrnong saw our lead cut to 1 point but it was all

too late. The siren sounded after the ball was thrown up in the center.

All players weren't sure who had actually won but there were scenes of jubilation when our boys were told

of our victory.

I spoke about being being humble in defeat and gracious in victory; something I think many young

footballers need to learn but our boys displayed sportsmanship beyond their years - it made me proud to

coach a group of boys who understand values such as these.

I spoke individually to each player on the way home about their performances and I look forward to the

next challenge.

Once again I won't name best players - it was a massive effort from all of the boys. Goal Kickers - Bayley

McGowen 3, Isaac Thomas 1, Jay Rantall 1 (goal of the year).

At this stage we play on the 27th August with a semi final at 10.30am - if we win this game then we play in

the STATE FINAL at 12.30pm. All games will be played on the same day at Craigieburn - more details to

come.

Thanks to all the families who drove to Ballarat to support our team and to help with goal umpiring - GO

BULLANTS.

Tuesday 4th August - Greater Western Finals

After a long bus trip had pool games against

B a l l a r a t H i g h &

Edenhope College. With the games being on-

ly 24 minutes long the boys knew they couldn't

h a v e a n y l a p s e s i n

concentration.

Game One: Ballarat

The boys took a little while to blow out the

cobwebs but Pirates defender turned Bullants

forward Fallon scored the first goal and

Captain White followed up with a penalty

stroke. Strong defence from Colee,

Drummond,Little Jackway, and Macleod

meant GK Barby had very little to do.

Game Two: Edenhope

After some strong words from Coach and Captain the boys played a much better team game and put 4 goals

past a very good Edenhope keeper. Goals to Crimmin, Colee, Varley and Giblin ( a beauty).

The Final: Monivae College - who were undefeated in their pool.

A 24 minute final goes very quickly. An early goal to White put the Bullants in front but a Monivae goal at the 14

minute mark made for a very exciting last 10 minutes. Gut running from Manderson, Varley, Weir and company

plus very strong defensive pressure from forward Sharp caused Monivae turn overs and Crimmin scored a

fantastic goal! 3 minutes of whole team defence saw the Bullants win 2-1. Greater Western Champions and

through to the SSV State Finals.

Thursday August 13th Footscray 3 x 40 minute pool matches and a 40 minute final.

Pool A: Nagle, Blackburn, St. Arnaud, Maribyrnong Pool B: Frankston, University High, Warrnambool, Wodonga CC

Warrnambool 6 d University High 1

Goals: White 3, Giblin, Fallon, Crimmin

Great team defence caused a lot of University turn overs and Bullants goals. A highlight was the hard work of

forwards Sharp, Giblin, Crimmin and Fallon when they didn't have the ball.

Warrnambool 15 d Wodonga CC 0

Coach Thomson demanded that Bullants spread the ball and score goals and that is what they delivered.

Nicholson, Weir, Giblin, Macleod and company kept the foot down right to the end - three goals in the last three

minutes. Captain White's passing into the attacking circle was superb. Goals: Crimmin 5, White 4, Giblin 2,

Macleod 2, Varley, Drummond.

Frankston 1 drew with Warrnambool 1.

Frankston is a team with a number of representative players right up to an Australian level. It was a fantastic

match from both sides. White put Warrnambool ahead at the 22 minute mark only to see Frankston draw level

after 30 minutes. The last 10 minutes kept the parent spectators on edge as each team conjured up shots on goal

only to see them stopped by the opposition defenders. GK Barby was superb as were Drummond, Little,

Manderson, Varley, Jackway and their fellow defenders and midfielders. Captain White showed just why he is

playing Premier League for MCC. A superior goal difference saw The Bullants into the final.

Unfortunately Warrnambool had only a 10 minute rest while Pool A winner Nagle had 50 minutes to rest up.

The final was a tough, last man standing affair with much skin (and some blood) left on the field. While others

started to run out of legs Weir thrived while Barby, Little, Drummond and Manderson continued to defend

stubbornly. A penalty stroke to Nagle at 31 minute mark could have deflated the Bullants spirit but they

continued to work hard. Great work from Crimmin, Jackway and Nicholson forced two short corners in the last

minutes but the very tired Bullants were unable to convert.

Congratulations to Nagle from Bairnsdale - their Goal Keeper was superb. Thank-you to all the parents who came

along to support the boys, provide first aid and food - they certainly were entertained. Good-bye to Tobin, Jack,

Ryan and Will. Thank-you for all the fun times and good luck with your sport in the future.

BULLANT SPIRIT ON SHOW IN BALLARAT!

After defeating Ballarat High and Horsham Secondary

in the Preliminary Rounds, Warrnambool College

Bullants faced Lake View Secondary College at

Ballarat on Tuesday August 11th in freezing conditions.

There was a strong cross breeze favouring the left of

screen and the Bullants with the aid of winning the

toss kicked with the breeze. The opposition were

bigger than the Bullants, and we appeared outsized,

however the boys were fired up to start well. In the

first quarter the Bullants were running all over Lake

View, tackling hard, using quick handball and

pressuring their bigger opponent, but could only

manage 1 goal 7 behinds. I was certain that our inaccuracy after

dominating the quarter would come back to bite us. Lake View managed 1 goal 1 behind into the wind. In the

second quarter I challenged the Bullants to stand up and execute our plan into the breeze. Lake View however,

came out firing and kicked the first 2 goals of the quarter to take the lead. The Bullants responded with a goal

against the flow and slowed the play up nicely, sharing the ball and soaking up precious time. At half time the

Bullants trailed by a point. Lake View lead 3 goals 4 behinds to The Bullants 2 Goals 9 Behinds. The third quarter is

known as the premiership quarter. The Bullants needed to firstly win the ball and try to transfer the footy to the top

side of the oval to give themselves every chance to kick a goal. We had to limit Lake View into the wind. From the

first bounce, Tobias Lane along with Jake Morton, gave our midfield of Justin Fedley, Sandy Williams and Beau

Turland first use of the footy and the Bullants were able to have repeat entry after repeat entry inside our forward

50. This time however, with the wind we kicked goals. Josh Bell snagged 2 for the quarter and Lachy Cowell, Justin

Fedley and Taylor Johnstone kicked 1 apiece. Tom Baker came on and gave the Bullants some run on a wing as

did Brent Fedley. Our Backline consisting of Sam Wilde, Davis Lindsey, Travis Parsons, Ben heard, Xavier Zegi and

Jordan Walters was solid only allowing them one scoring shot. After slamming on 5 goals 3 behinds for the quarter,

the Bullants took a 5 goal lead into the last quarter. Could we hang on against the breeze. Our plan again was to

use the defensive side of the ground and we added a spare defender Lachy Cowell to sit in the hole. At the start

of the last quarter Jake Butler took a hanger (spectacular mark). Lake View

however, kicked the opening two goals. The Bullants didn’t panic and re-

sponded by kicking the next two goals due to efficient ball movement and

great contesting by Josh Bell and Ayden Bosse up forward. Lake View kicked

another goal but we matched it with our third goal for the quarter into the

breeze to win comfortably by 5 goals. This win was one of the best wins I’ve

been involved in at Warrnambool College!!!

On Tuesday, August 18th we play the State Semi-Final in the morning and if we

are successful we play the State final in the afternoon. The Bullants travel to

Craigieburn in our attempt to win the state title.

Warrnambool College students perform at the

Warrnambool Art Gallery 2nd August

The Warrnambool Art Gallery hosted a wonderful

Sunday afternoon concert on the 2nd of August,

with performances exclusively from students from

Warrnambool College. It was a wonderful way to

celebrate our student’s recent achievements in the

Warrnambool Eisteddfod, AMEB and VCE exams.

Warrnambool College was also presented with the

Beryl Beardsley Award for the highest aggregate

points (Secondary School) for the Music Eisteddfod,

and Tiffany Tracey was awarded the trophy for the

best vocal performance at the Vocal Eisteddfod.

Congratulations to all students who performed for

this concert, it was a marvellous event that we

hope to repeat in years to come!

Musical Band!

It wasn’t just the cast who were having a blast

during Warrnambool College’s musical ‘Little Shop

of Horrors!’ Our band did an incredible job of learn-

ing, rehearsing and playing the score, and keeping

the audience excited from start to finish! Thank you

De Le Salle Music Tour Performance

Last Wednesday the 12th of August numerous clas-

ses and music students were treated to two con-

certs by the music department of the De Le Salle

College from Malvern. This all boys school (to some

students delight) provided an

entertaining array of performances from their

Concert Band, Stage Band, Guitar ensemble, Choir,

Saxophone ensemble and String ensemble. It is a

great opportunity to support music programs in our

schools and I thank all of the teachers and students

who came to enjoy the concerts. Perhaps our

music department could return the favour and visit

the De Le Salle College on our Music Tour next

year?

WCB Adrian Meade Dairy Innovation Program

The Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Adrian Meade Dairy Innovation Program was a great success again this

year with 13 students from across WCB’s milk supply area selected by interview to take part. The idea of this

six-day structured workplace learning program is to show Year 10 and 11 students the scope of careers in the

dairy industry and to show how each career fits within the dairy supply chain.

In late June, students spent one day at the factory learning about WCB’s business, products, processes and

careers. During the school holidays, the group then went on a four-day bus trip of the whole dairy industry

supply chain, including farms, service providers, agricultural study institutions, food technology laboratories,

Dairy Australia, a retail outlet, Cooperative Research Centre and the Port of Melbourne. A final day at the

factory was spent talking about career paths, employment processes and training options. Students gave a

presentation about their experience to parents, WCB staff and directors at the close of the program and were

presented with certificates. For students interested in applying for next year’s program, careers teachers will

be sent information when the new school year starts. For more info see http://www.wcbf.com.au/community/

40 HOUR FAMINE

World Vision is celebrating 40 years of Australia’s iconic 40 Hour Famine and expects tens of thousands of young

people to give up something important to them to help fight global hunger this weekend.

Over four decades, millions of Australians have raised more than $200 million to help people living in poverty in

countries like Ethiopia, Nepal, East Timor and Bangladesh.

Students will be giving up a variety of things for 40hrs- this may include food, furniture, technology and even

sight!

Please feel free to pick any student and donate towards their fundraising at:

https://40hf2015.everydayhero.com/au/warrnambool-college/members

Every penny counts!

Good luck students.

Miss Shamoail :)

On Friday, 24 July 18 year 12 students attended Westvic to complete their ‘RSA’ certificates. The course was very

stimulating and educational with a lot of our previously held misconceptions regarding alcohol being

challenged. At the end a multiple choice test was taken and we now eagerly await our results to see who could

be serving you next!

All the Year 9 students went to Portland to the Courage to Care exhibition, which taught us about the atrocities

of the Holocaust, and how Jewish, homosexual people and gypsies were killed just for being themselves. We

heard a Holocaust survivor tell his tragic story about surviving a concentration camp, and the pain and

suffering that he went through. We then got into groups and talked about discrimination and justice, linking this

to bullying that might take place at school. It was incredibly moving and inspiring to hear the survivors' stories --

there were lots of tears in the audience.

old time favourites and the newer minion craze. There

was a lot of effort to detail in some costumes and the

Wow! What a start to Hands On Learning.

4 weeks in and already the team has been in the thick of things. From undertaking a range of projects including

preparing the garden at the main entrance to the college, starting construction of a pizza oven out of a

dis-used hot water service and preparing garden beds for vegetables the school can access.

The students have also prepared all meals including breakfast and lunch with the team eating together and of

course washing up afterwards. Not to mention the delicious fruit available throughout the day. Well done to all

on a great start to the semester.

The program is based on creating a space for students away from their regular school day, where they feel that

being part of this group, they can work together confidently, differently while encouraging their creativity.

Our current group focus;

* Be a positive role

model

* Help others * Encourage others

* Trust

To help us get up and running on our projects we have purchased our own tools, gardening equipment and

kitchenware. A big thanks to staff who have also donated a range of odds and ends including microwave, BBQ,

cups, plates and other items. We couldn’t do this without your support.

WARRNAMBOOL teenager Jamin Baulch

is setting himself for a maiden berth at

the Australian Open Swimming

Championships after winning a

prestigious award.

Baulch, 18, was named Barwon

South-West Swimming Association

swimmer of the year in Colac on Sunday

after a strong season in the pool. Points

were collated from championship meets

over the past 12 months.

The backstroke specialist said he was

humbled to win the award.

“I was really surprised to win it, I was taken

aback,” he said.

“It is a reasonably big award and I was really

happy to win it.

“I didn’t think I had that much of a standout year

but looking back at it I had a good shortcourse

season and won medals at Victoria Country

champs and made finals at state shortcourse

champs.”

Warrnambool College is proud of Jamin who is

combining year 12 studies with training and is

already eyeing the national titles in April 2016.

Baulch wants to qualify in the 100m backstroke.

“I will work as hard as I can, keep training in the

pool and the gym and hopefully I’ll get a

qualifying time,” he said.

“I am 2.5 seconds off at the moment but I know if I

knuckle down and get my skills right that I’ll give

myself a good chance to do it.”

ABSENCES

Parents/Guardians are required to record all student absences via Compass.

To log into Compass to record the absence for your child directly, the link to this site is

on the Compass link.

If you have lost your log in details, please do not hesitate to contact the school office on

It is a legal requirement for a note to be sent if your child is signing out of the College early.

Alternatively, you may log on to Compass and approve the early depart before they need to

leave, or you may give the office a call. Unfortunately we cannot accept a text message sent

to seek permission at the time the student is signing out if they don’t have prior permission.

In this case we are not permitted, by law, to allow the student to leave the College.
