Every Child Can Learn

We believe that every student attending

Warrnambool College can achieve success

in the classroom. We know that many of

our students have skills that are not

recognised or measured at school but are

never-the-less remarkable in terms of

individual achievement outside of class.

We need to find out about these skills and

acknowledge them. We need to tell

students that where-ever they succeed in

life, great learning happens. And we need

to tell students that if they can succeed in

model kite building or motor cross racing

outside of school, they can equally

succeed in classroom learning. It is all a

matter of students believing in

themselves and knowing that they can

learn. Every child can learn.

Hard Work Pays Off

Although there are the occasional

geniuses in the world, the vast majority of

people are capable of great success with a

little hard work. The students who I have

seen achieve great results from Year 7

through to Year 12 are those who have

worked consistently and conscientiously

throughout the year.

Parents please note: Students are supervised between the times of 8.45am until 3.45pm daily

They are students who are organised and

do not leave things until the last moment.

They are the ones who write, reflect and

correct their work before submission.

Although homework for homework’s sake

may not always be the most valuable

activity for students, building a habit of

learning at home can help set up senior

students for a successful Year 12. Being

organised and managing workloads is a

valuable life-long skill. Hard work pays off.

Being happy with who you are

Part of feeling good with ourselves is

being able to be ourselves in public. Every

student needs to know that no matter

who they are, we will respect them for

their unique personality. Everyone is

different from one another. We may be

assertive, self-conscious, gregarious,

depressed, creative, sporty, imaginative,

reflective, conscientious, disorganised,

cynical, funny, extraverted, political,

optimistic, anxious or more. We may be all

of these things or none of them. No

matter who we are, we should feel

comfortable about being ourselves and

being accepted for who we are. At

Warrnambool College we hope that all

students feel happy about being who they

Accessing Compass

As per our previous newsletters, please ensure you are accessing Compass on a regular basis as this is a vital

means of communicating between school and home. Attendance, reporting, learning tasks, upcoming events

and online payments can all be accessed via Compass. Keeping a regular check of your students Compass

Learning Tasks will assist with their organisation. Please make sure you know your login details and use them

regularly so that you are continually informed as to your child’s progress at school. If you need assistance with

this please contact the school office.

Indonesian and French Study Tours

Students and staff involved in the French study tour have just returned to Warrnambool. By all reports it was

an incredible time away, experiencing both the French culture and language. A brief report has been written

for the newsletter so please read on to find out more details about the highlights of their time away.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Interviews were conducted during the first two weeks of this terms and provided staff, students and parents

with the opportunity to discuss individual student’s learning progress. Judging by the busyness of each

evening, many parents took up this opportunity. If you weren’t able to book a time with a specific teacher and

would like to discuss your child’s learning progress at school, please contact the teacher at school to arrange

for another meeting time or to discuss this over the phone. The next Parent Teacher Interviews will be

conducted at the end of term 3.

Out of Bounds Consequences

Please be reminded that students are not to leave the school grounds during school hours unless they have

been given explicit permission to attend an appointment by their parent / carer. Students are not to visit the

shop on Cramer Street or go anywhere else outside the school boundary during school hours – doing so will

result in a 1 day suspension. This applies to all year levels.

ANZAC Day

The ANZAC remembrance assembly held in the school hall is always a very moving experience and this year

was no exception. The speeches made, music played and insights provided all helped to make sense of this

very important part of Australia’s history. On ANZAC day itself we had many students representing our school

and marching at the Dennington and Warrnambool ANZAC services. Whilst the weather wasn’t very

cooperative, students displayed tremendous resilience in supporting and participating in the day. A special

thanks goes out to Kelan Galbraith for playing the Last Post at the dawn, Dennington and Warrnambool

services.

Engagement and Wellbeing meeting

At our next Engagement and Wellbeing meeting our uniform supplier, Dobsons, will be discussing new options

for our school uniform. There is still room on this committee for parent representation. If you are interested

in getting involved, please contact the office to find out more details regarding the meeting schedule for this

year.

Up Coming Events:

There will be an out-of-uniform day for Logans house on Friday the 1st May. This event will help to raise much

needed funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital. The annual cross country will be held on the 6th of May. A

reminder that there will be a public holiday on the 7th of May for the Warrnambool races. NAPLAN, involving

all students in years 7 and 9 will also occur during the week beginning the 11th May. Our school Open Night for

prospective parents and students will be held during education week on Tuesday 19th May.

All Warrnambool and District Secondary Colleges in conjunction with the region’s Further

Education providers will be combining to host the Biennial Careers Expo during Careers

Week in May 2015. The primary aim of the Expo is to assist students and their parents to

research a wide range of careers options in preparation for the important decisions

students will make over the next few years.

The Careers Expo is conducted every two years and from past experience and

testimonials, is an invaluable experience and extremely useful in assisting students in

their career decision making and transition process. Research clearly indicates that

families who research career options early have a greater degree of success in navigating

through the many career options.

Guest presenters are current practitioners in their chosen vocations and they will outline

the day to day tasks involved within their career, the career paths and education and

training required to obtain employment in their field / industry as well as further career

prospects / advancement opportunities. Students from Year 8 to Year 12 can attend the

Careers Expo.

Year 12 Dress up day – First letter of your name

The first of the Year12 dress up days was celebrated by a large number of the year level. Many great costumes from small to big, scary to hilarious, but most of all an opportunity for the year level to bond. There was some great MC work by Ben Rantall for the lunchtime catwalk. Some new dance moves were on display, along with some of the classics. The music playlist was mostly understandable by the teachers with a few number one hits of both the modern and classic era’s.

A big thank you to all that participated and got behind the day.

2015 French Trip Greg Twitt

Twenty intrepid students of the French language, along with Sally Jane, Elena Mujkic and Greg Twitt,

spent most of April on a study tour of France. The trip was a lifetime highlight for all of us! The

students learnt heaps, not only French language skills but also about organisation, travel, culture,

history, art,... the list goes on.

So much happened that it is impossible to relate it all in this short article. Here is an outline of what

we did:

Four days in Paris, where we saw all the best Paris has to offer, including a day trip to the

palace of Versailles. We did so much that many of us were out and about until after midnight,

two nights in a row. Students quickly learnt to get on and off metro carriages quick smart,

even when they had to cram in like sardines!

A week at language school in Rouen, the best preserved medieval city of Europe, learning from our inspirational teacher

Victor. All classes were entirely in French, which was a shock initially to most of us. We soon learnt to have a go, even if it

was a struggle, and our language skills improved every day. Also had some good afternoons shopping in the "zone pieton"

pedestrian area. Students had their first home stay experience - their host families gave them glowing reports which was

excellent.

A week in Villers-Bretonneux, a small French town with amazing Australian connections. All students were hosted by

families from our sister school Collège Jacques Brel, and attended classes with their host brothers and sisters. When we

weren't in class we were out visiting some of the World War 1 cemeteries and monuments in the area, which were

extremely moving. The week ended with tearful farewells to host families, then participation in the ANZAC Day dawn

service at the nearby Australian National War Memorial. The flight home was excellent because Jenna, who spent most of

the week unwell in hospital, was able to fly back with us!

If you want to find out a bit more about our trip, and see some photos, you can see them on our blog at http://france2015.global2.vic.edu.au - to access it you will need to enter the password "wcft2015". The entire school community should be massively proud of every student on the trip. They were excellent ambassadors for our school (and country), made the most of all the opportunities they had and received many compliments on their attitude and enthusiasm.

As they say in France, "formidable!"

Warrnambool College was honoured to share in a number of moving performances last Friday morning as part of our school ANZAC assembly. The Senior Band played hymns as the students made themselves comfortable in the hall, with the choir joining the band to sing the national anthem. The choir had their first performance of the year singing ‘In Flanders Fields’, with special guest Jarrah Wishart (year 7) accompanying us on violin. We were also treated to performances by current staff member Gault McCluggage singing ‘I was only 19’ and former staff member Don Cowling performing his song ‘Kokoda’. Kelan Galbraith had the honour of playing ‘The Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ not only for our school assembly but he also represented Warrnambool College at the Dennington and Warrnambool ANZAC Day 100th Anniversary Commemorations. Congratulations Kelan! And thank you to everyone who took part in the ANZAC assembly for Warrnambool College.

Page 7

On Thursday the 23rd of April 42 Year 7-9 Warrnambool College girls attended a girls football day

at the Davidson Oval.

There were over 150 girls from the three local schools which amazed even the organisers. The

day involved a skills clinic for an hour, a presentation from region manager, Tim Shearer, and a

round robin format of games. During the games our Year nine girls dominated against the

Emmanuel and Brauer girls.

“Too strong, too tough” was often heard from their opponents and the girls prided themselves

on the contested part of the game. Better players were Isabell Wilkinson, Taylah Antonio, Mimi

Dixon, Jennifer Netherway and Grace and Ruby Bell. In the Year 7 and 8 team the girls were

ferocious around the ball.

With 36 girls around the ball there was no time or space to dispose of the ball and it looked very

much like AFL football at the moment. The last game against Brauer was a bruising and hard

hitting classic with no-one taking a backward step. Sam “sledgehammer” Jackway led the way in

the contested football and she was ably supported by the creativity of Renee Saulitis, Kayla May

and Jayda Page.

All girls really enjoyed the day and hopefully some of the girls will get involved in the Bullants

footy academy this year with an exclusive girls Footy academy planned for 2016.

Across all Technology subjects students are provided with the opportunity to use their thinking ability

to design a produce a range of items.

The students in the Year 8 Product Design subject have been learning about using the tools safely

and are now at the point in the process where they are building their designed lamp. From my desk I

hear the sound of saws, sanders and the calls for teacher assistance. It is great to see the students

working so hard on their future lamps.

The time is upon us again, the May Race Week. For 2014 there were very few youth related incidences, and the feedback from race goers was very favourable of the behaviour of the young people attending the event.

For this year, we are continuing with the zero tolerance approach to unsociable and intoxicated youth. If people who look underage are sighted consuming alcohol and do not have a wrist band on their arms, they will be spoken to by police to prove their age. If they are not ca-pable of such, the offending person will have their parents/guardian rang up who will have to be collect that child from the track. Plus there is a possibility of prosecution for underage drinking.

However, for patrons who are 18 years and over and wish to pur-chase alcohol they will have to produce proof of age (In photo for-mat) to prove same. Statutory Declarations are not an acceptable doc-ument as a proof of age document. They will be provided with a wrist band to wear during the day’s event.

There will be signs erected at the entrances of the race track which will state NO ALCOHOL OR GLASSWARE IS PERMITTED. Security will have tables for searching bags. All bags will be searched as condition of entry - refusal to have their bag searched will mean refusal of entry to the track. (This applies to Adults as well).

Entry for 15 to 17 yo (Without a parent or guardian) will be $25.00.

All children under 15 yo will have free admittance but must be with parent/guardian. - If not entry will be refused.

Any persons affected by alcohol will be refused entry.

All underage children who are affected by alcohol or in possession of alcohol will have it seized and will be prosecuted. I.E. Penalty notice. Plus parents/guardians will be notified to collect the child from the premises or Police Station; this will also apply for anti-social behav-iour.

Any persons, who travel on the bus to and from the races, need to keep in mind that all bus drivers have the authority to refuse entry on the bus if the passenger is intoxicated. If there is any antisocial behav-iour whilst on the bus, the driver will stop the bus and police will be called to remove the offender.

I trust the message is clear that the Police and the Racing Committee are committed to making the Carnival the most enjoyable and safe fes-tival as possible. Any inappropriate behaviour will not be not tolerated.

Parents/Guardians are required to record all student absences via

Compass.

To log into Compass to record the absence for your child directly, the

link to this site is www.wblcoll.vic.jdlf.com.au or you can Google the

Warrnambool College website and click on the Compass link.

If you have lost your log in details, please do not hesitate to contact

the school office on 5564 4444.

It is a legal requirement for a note to be sent if your child is signing out

of the College early. Alternatively, you may log on to Compass and

approve the early depart before they need to leave, or you may give

the office a call. Unfortunately we cannot accept a text message sent

to the student’s phone as permission. It can sometimes be very

difficult to contact a parent to seek permission at the time the student

is signing out if they don’t have prior permission. In this case we are

not permitted, by law, to allow the student to leave the College.

Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN)

This is a leadership program for 14-17 year old students. Our club provides funding for two students from this ara to attend the training.

It is conducted at a weekend residential camp at either Mt Gambier or Maryborough. It is designed to develop dedision making skills, leadership and community service skills.

It targets students who may not be in leadership positions at present but who exhibit the qualities of compassion, concern and commitment to their community.

RYPEN is conducted from Friday to Sunday afternoon, usually in April—the date will be confirmed soon. Most of the cost is met by the Rotary Club, but students are asked to pay $50. Transport will be provided by the Rotary Club.

Students who wish to apply may send a written application to Rose Shamoail at Warrnambool College.
