Alternatively, it can also be connectedto the main automation system.

Under normal operating conditions, the temperatures o the crankpins andconnecting rod big end bearings vary

within a specic value range, which

is determined or each installation. Atemperature increase is thereore signallingthe beginning o a malunction.

Thanks to the wireless temperaturemonitoring system, it is now possible tomeasure in real time the temperatures

with high precision. This allowsany temperature increase o specicbearings to be monitored, and or thealarm to be raised so that the enginecan be slowed or shut down beorethe deviation rom predened values

    leads to ailure or breakdown.

grimaldi group i naplesoes for WrtsilThe Grimaldi Group in Naples, one oItalys most important ship owners, has

or the past ve years, been operating amanagement and maintenance strategy

policy o prevention and saety as regardsthe propulsion systems o its feet.In spring 2006, the Grimaldi Group

decided to install a Crankpin WirelessTemperature Monitoring System to oneo the 12-cylinder, in V-congurationSulzer ZA40S main engines poweringits Eurostar Roma erry. The purpose

was to test this prevention device andits ability to detect in advance possibleailures o the engine crankshat bearingsand related components. Followingsuccessul completion o these tests in

summer 2006, the Grimaldi Groupmade the decision to install the wirelesssystem to Eurostar Romas other threeSulzer ZA40S main engines. The system

was also installed on the two 8-cylinder,in-line Sulzer ZA40S engines on thecompanys Fides and Spes vessels.

The preparatory work or theinstallation o the wireless system includesdrilling the engine block, installingthe antenna support, and drilling theconnecting rod big end upper part in orderto install the sensors. Wrtsils knowledge

o the design and vibration behaviouris critical or the determination o theposition and characteristics o the hole.

The best time to perorm work onthe connecting rod big end is during amajor overhaul when the dismantled p

connecting rod big ends can be drilledor replaced with ready-drilled new ones.

The installation o the wireless system onthe Grimaldi Group vessels was plannedand executed during scheduled overhauls, and according to the specifc needs andschedules suitable or each vessel.

For Grimaldis M/V Spes, the workwas executed in two phases. Thedrilling o the connecting rod big endupper part and the engine block wascompleted during dry-docking, while theinstallation and commissioning o thewireless system was carried out at sea.

    Taking advantage o Wrtsils large

service network, the frst phase wascarried out by Wrtsil in Greece. Thedrilling o the connecting rod was donein the workshop, while the drillingo the engine block was carried outonboard during the ships overhaul.

The dry-docking was carried out as planned, and Grimaldis M/V Spes was again readyor sailing as scheduled by the customer.

On the engine o Grimaldis EurostarRoma, the connecting rod big endswere replaced with new ones alreadydrilled. The remaining part o the job

was carried out at sea or during operativecalls. Other installations o wirelesstemperature monitoring systems areplanned by Wrtsil in Italy during thiscurrent year. Some will be carried outusing an exchange set o connectingrod big ends during ast stops.

The versatility o Wrtsil Servicesallows customers to easily installthe latest technologies withouthindrance to operating schedules.

Retroft packages, or which manycustomers including the Italian Navy have

expressed interest and commitment, willsoon be available as well or GMT 420and 230 engines. Within Wrtsil, wireless temperature monitoring o bigend bearings is available or a wide rangeo engine types (see Table 1) or bothmarine and power plant installations.Although the operating principle is thesame or all engine types, the sensors andtheir positioning, the antenna supportsinside the engine block, and the vibrationstability are specifcally designed andchecked or each engine type.
