Big Local catch up

Big Local is an exciting opportunity for residents

on Warwick Estate to use at least £1m to make

a massive and lasting positive difference to the

community. Warwick Ahead Big Local project

continues to go from strength to strength. Every

resident within the Warwick Ahead Big Local

Area is a member of the Partnership unless they

actively opt out. This means that every resident’s

contribution to the Big Local Vision is important.

A Plan is currently being put together on what

the priorities are for the first 18 months to 3

years to make the estate a better, happier and

healthier place to live now and for the future. In

July a Community Board was set up to oversee

the vision and plan. As this is a 10 year project

ideas will evolve and develop and residents can

get involved at any stage and at any level.

The elected Chair Person of the Board is

resident Rebekah Eyles. There are 21 places

with 14 of them being for residents or people

permanently based on the estate. If you are

interested in being involved we are recruiting

Board Members from people living in this area

(see map on back page).

The Community Board meets every 2 months

and each member of the group pledges to work

for the good of the whole community, there

are also Interest Groups where people with a

definite interest can get involved. (see inside

pages)

Members of Warwick Ahead recently presented

the vision for a better estate to senior managers

at Wakefield Council. It is important that Warwick

Ahead work with key agencies to make sure we

get as much done for estate as is possible.

In April Warwick Ahead hosted a visit from

Dewsbury Moor Big Local area, sharing

between Big Local areas is an important part

of the project and Big Local often pays travel

Members of the luncheon club

costs for residents to visit other areas and swap

experiences.

In July residents presented about Warwick Estate

at a Big Local event in Leeds, and in August the

Addy hosted a regional Big Local event. Big Local

has funded lots of activities and trips over the last

few months one of the most popular has been

the luncheon club for older residents at the Addy.

Residents have enjoyed a three course meal and

bingo or entertainment.

Next Warwick Ahead Community Board meeting is Tuesday 25th September 10.00am at the Addy Please call Judi Alston on 07901

League, ‘additional needs’ family sessions,

Youth Club, art sessions and much more.

Knottingley Dragon Boat Race

Pontefract and Knottingley Neighbourhood Police Team

Young players from the Pontefract and

Knottingley’s police run sports teams including

Max’s Madcats, Monkhill Monkeys, Knottingley

Angels and Paddy’s Predators are now the stars

of a new set of cards that they can collect, swap

and treasure.

The 72 card set has been designed to have a

picture of each player on them along with their

team crest, police contact details and most

importantly; a safety themed message on the

back of each one such as road safety awareness,

staying safe while playing out and general well

being.

We hope that the children will have fun swapping

the cards. This sort of activity is seen throughout

the country within school playgrounds and we

feel whilst they are busy doing this they are

developing their social skills.

Sycamore Childrens Centre Recently, the Children’s Centre ran trips to Filey

and Temple Newsam Farm funded by Big Local.

With 142 attendees, it was very successful. We

used the time on the coaches to talk about Big

Local and to encourage people to get involved.

The Children’s Centre staff and families would

like to say a big thank you to Big Local as many

would not have been able to afford to take a

family trip to the seaside and the farm.

Open Monday to Friday (8.30am -5pm) and

provides services for all families with children

under 5 years old and expectant parents living in

the Knottingley & Ferrybridge area.

Love Where You Live

Wakefield Council has teamed up with Keep

Britain Tidy, and other partners, to bring the Love

Where You Live campaign to life in the district.

There are lots of things that affect how we feel

about where we live; how it looks, what there is to

do there, how safe we feel and addressing these

issues isn’t something that Council services and

partners can solve alone, we need your help. Is

there something you could pledge to change?

It could be doing a litter pick to tidy your local

street or park, volunteering to work with people

in your community, it could even be as simple as

tidying up your own garden or resolving to recycle

more.

We’d love to hear what you love about where you

live and what you’re planning to do in your area

Poetry Corner

Ready for a Challenge by Rebekah Eyles

Are you ready for the challenge are you ready

for the change. Here it is and its heading our

way.

No longer will we stand in the dark and watch

our community change we now have one voice,

one vision and this time its here to stay.

But where does it start? It starts right here with

you and me so lets start a chain reaction we will

build together, mend together and lend a helping

hand, leave our house and get to know the

neighbours, share what we have in knowledge

and skills. We will honour our elders and hire

our young people to do odd jobs. Ask for help

when we need it and be a shoulder to cry on

when others need it, lets plan together to make

things happen even if it takes months or years.

Warwick Ahead Big Local Area Map

We can share our joys, our problems and

achievements, lets say hello to people we pass

but do not know, lets help the old, the young, the

sick and depressed.

I hear you say that this can not be done but lets

hold our heads up high and be proud of our

community because you and I have taken the

first steps just by saying HI!
