Congratulations to Randy Brennan - Randy was selected as a “Coach for Bowling” for the USA National Summer Special Olympic Games to be held in Trenton, New Jersey, 13-20 June 2014. Randy competed for the position with other entries from all over the state of Virginia. “I am so grateful for the chance to work with 62 athletes that have proven their skills and worked very hard in all sports to compete at the National level.” Their next step will be the World Games in 2015. The local Special Olympics bowling is held every Wednesday during the school year and the group has doubled in one year, thanks to the dedicated help from Evelyn LeRoy and Randy’s assistant coach Ann-Marie Comer. “I am blessed to have such a terrific group of athletes that continue to give their hearts and

Sunday Morning Schedule: The WMUMC Leadership Team has been working to develop a resolution to problems that were identified with the current Sunday morning schedule. After researching the issue, developing options, and considering feedback from Sunday School teachers and Sanctuary Music ministries, the Leadership Team approved a schedule change to eliminate the structured Fellowship time and snacks after the Lampstand service and to shift the start of Sunday School back 10 minutes. These changes will enable most people to get to Sunday school on time and provide a full hour for both the Sunday School and Lampstand Services. The Sunday School classes that wish to do so can provide coffee and snacks in their room as was done by many classes in the past.. The revised schedule as listed below will be implemented today, June 8:
Sanctuary Services at 8:30 and 11:15 - Lampstand Service 9:00-10:00 Sunday School 10:10-11:10
While neither the current schedule nor any variants considered are optimal for everyone, we are confident that this change is the best option to support the mission of the church – to Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World. Respectfully submitted,

Youth Missions: This summer the Youth will be sending Middle and High School youth mission teams to R.E.A.C.H. in Roanoke, VA. The High School week is July 12-18, with our Middle School week being July 19-25. You can learn more at reachyouthmissions.com. The last regular youth meeting is on June 1 and that is the day that the church will recognize our graduates. Check out what is happening with our youth at wmumc.org/youth2
Children’s Fellowship Missions and Activities: During the summer, the children are invited to participate in various missions and activities, beginning on Saturday, July 12th with a fundraising car wash in the WMUMC parking lot. Watch for the complete schedule of Friday events in the coming weeks. Don’t forget to sign up for Vacation Bible School - see the insert for details.
United Methodist Men: will have their dinner and meeting on Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The Newport News Fire Department will present a program on Home Fire Safety. We invite all men and ladies to join us for this event. If you plan to attend, call Gene Osborne at 875-1183 (H) or 272-6674 (C) so we can make sure we have plenty of food prepared.
United Methodist Women: General meeting will be held on June 17, 2014 at 6:30pm in the fellowship hall. This will be a covered dish. Bring a dish and share with your friends. All UM Women are invited to attend this meeting and program. The program will be a book discussion led by Linda McLawhorn, book One Simple Act. If possible read the book. Come out for fun and fellowship with your fellow UMW. See you there. If you have questions you may call Virginia Taylor at 599-4306.
A Note From The Worship Chairs: As a way to help people encounter God, particularly by reflecting on worship service themes, our church’s Altars have been designed with symbols and art on a weekly basis. The designs flow from prayer, scripture meditation and conversations with the pastors. Sometimes lighting and distance make the details difficult to see, so we invite you to come have a closer look before or after the service. It might help to ask yourself, “what does this display say about who God is, who I am, and my relationship with God.” If you want to know more, or see how you can be involved, please see Linda McLawhorn (Sanctuary) or Linda Carrithers (Lampstand).

AVL Volunteers Needed for VBS: The Audio Video Lighting (AVL) Ministry needs volunteers for VBS week, June 23, to 27, 2014. This is your chance to learn new skills and play music for children during VBS. Your commitment for one week does include training. Training sessions started on Sunday, May 25, 8:00 am during Lampstand Service and continue each week until VBS (additional training can be arranged). Volunteers of thirteen (13) years up are invited to support Vacation Bible School. AVL volunteers are needed each day of VBS from 8:30am to 11:30am. THANK YOU: Thanks to a scholarship provided by Ann Elder, two children, Shelby Mayeaux and Lance Sczesny, will be attending Kaleidoscope Music Camp. We will travel to Blackstone the first week of August with a group from First UMC in Newport News. The kids are looking forward to sharing every thing they learn when they get back. Thank you Ann!
Lamont Struthers’ Summer Basketball Camp: If you want your child to have the NBA experience, then they need to train with someone that has NBA experience! Coach, and former NBA star, Lamont Strothers, is proud to present the 9th Annual Summer Basketball Program - have your children join Coach Strothers and the Hard2Guard staff at WMUMC in the Celebration Center for weekly sessions and get Game Ready! Monday to Thursday 9am to 3:30pm from June 16th to August 8th. Camp includes 90 minutes speed and agility, 4.5 hours skills & drills daily. As a thank you to WMUMC, they are offering a special of just $75 per week for members. Part-time Nursery Position Available: The WMUMC nursery is seeking a part-time nursery worker. We are looking for someone who is experienced with children and enjoys working with children ages newborn - 4 years old. Workers have a set schedule, averaging 4 - 8 hours per month, with a possibility of additional evening hours. Workers earn an hourly wage. Candidates must be willing to receive required training and submit to our background check procedures. If interested, please submit a resume to Rev. 2014 KITS: The United Methodist Women have been assembling the following kits to be taken to the
Annual Conference. The deadline for turning in donations for the kits is TOMORROW -
Monday, June 9,. Place your items or completed kits in the containers in the main
hallway by the Narthex or in the Gathering Area outside the Celebration Center.
The following kits are needed. - Monetary donations include:
$1 per kit for processing and shipping
additional $1 per health kit (for toothpaste)
Other kit options include Bedding Kit, Birthing Kit (we have put these together, but more
would be welcome), Sewing Kit, and Cleaning Bucket, visit the vaumc.org website to learn
more.

1 hand towel (15”x25” to 17”x27”, no kitchen towels or microfiber towels)
1 washcloth
1 comb (large and sturdy, no pocket combs or picks)
1 metal nail file or clipper (no emery boards)
1 bath-sized bar of soap (3 oz. and up, in original packaging)
1 toothbrush (single adult size only, in original wrapper
6 adhesive plastic strip sterile bandages, ¾” to 1-inch
$1.00 to cover purchase of toothpaste (bought by distribution center.)
Seal all items in a 1-gallon plastic bag.

1 pair blunt scissors (rounded tip only, not plastic)
3 units of 8 ½” X 11” paper - any combination of spiral notebooks,
top-bound pads, or up to 150 sheets of loose leaf paper
(No composition books.)
1 30-centimeter ruler
1 hand-held pencil sharpener, at least 1” long, removed from package
6 unsharpened pencils with erasers
Baby/Layette Kits: 6 cloth diapers 2 undershirts or “onesies” 2 baby washcloths 2 gowns or sleepers 2 diaper pins with protective plastic closures 1 sweater open in the front; hooded sweatshirts acceptable 2 receiving blankets 30 or 32 inches square. Bundle the items (all packaging removed) inside one of the receiving blankets and secure with the diaper pins. Sewing Kit Value: $ 18.00 3 continuous yards of fabric - cotton or cotton blend only no heavy duty, corduroy, knit etc. No patriotic, religious, holiday, camouflage, or military patterned fabric. 1 pair scissors - fabric scissors only 1 package needles - hand needles in original packaging only 1 spool thread - medium to large spool - no travel kit thread please 5-8 buttons - 5/8 inch size or larger no loose buttons leave buttons in original packaging or fasten all together 1 plastic bag - one gallon size sealable bags only Assembling Directions: Place kit in the plastic bag and seal. Important Notes * All items must be new. * Do not wash the fabric as it will then be considered used.
Kits for Conference
This is an opportunity for church members of all ages to participate in a hands on ministry of providing basic needs to persons all over the globe. We invite you to join us in providing kits for distribution by UMCOR. Last year, Warwick Memorial provided over 200 kits of various types (see below). UMW has given us a head start. Please add

Food Collection
For the sixth year, our Virginia Annual Conference gathering invites
delegates to bring canned goods or boxed dry foods to benefit local
area food banks, and we would like to invite you to help. You can
send along food to go with Pastors Gina and Bert, along with Lay
Delegates Maggie and Jason Vincellete This year, food will go to
the Peninsula Food Bank. Requested cans include vegetables or fruit,
meat or fish, soup or stew, cans with a pop-top. In addition, you may
bring dry goods (e.g., boxed mac-and-cheese, spaghetti, pasta, grits,

2014 Annual Conference offering to help
fund eight ministries
This year the Annual Conference special offering goal is
$200,000. Bishop Young Jin Cho is requesting contributions to
support eight different ministries:
♦ Imagine No Malaria - $50,000;
♦ Initiatives of Hope - $50,000 for Cambodia church construction
and Christian education, $25,000 for Mozambique lay leadership
and communication training, $15,000 for Brazil Shade and Fresh
Water program for street children;
♦ Engaging/Connecting God’s Mission Funds - $10,000 to
promote mission engagement of Virginia Conference small
membership churches;
♦ Children Out of Poverty in Virginia - $30,000 divided between
Community Outreach Program in Roanoke and Agape Children’s
Center in Horntown, Eastern Shore; and
♦ Haiti - Connecting Hope - $20,000 to coordinate and connect
Virginia Conference churches in Haiti mission projects.
Offerings will be collected next Sunday, June 15th, please note on
your offering envelope or on your check which of these ministries
you would like to support.
Pastor Bert to speak at Laity Luncheon
The Annual Conference Laity Luncheon will be held Saturday,
June 21, at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Tickets are
required and the cost is $22 (payable to VAUMC). The speaker is
our very own Rev. Bert Cloud, co-pastor of Warwick Memorial
UMC, Newport News. As a pastor, Bert has also served a range
of church sizes and understands his call as helping people
connect and journey with God. Contact Pastor Bert or the Church
office if you are interested in attending.
