Note of the Night

1,200

- Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is expected to play in his 1,200th career game Tuesday night against the Colorado Avalanche at Capital One Arena.

- Ovechkin will become the first player in franchise history, one of five active players (Joe Thornton, Zdeno Chara, Dustin Brown and Ryan Suter) and

one of four Russian-born players in NHL history (Alex Kovalev, Sergei Gonchar, Sergei Fedorov) to reach the milestone.

- Since his NHL debut on Oct. 5, 2005 against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Ovechkin will have played in 1,200 of a possible 1,242 games (96.6%). Only

six other players that have played with one team in NHL history have played in at least 96% of their team’s games at their respective 1,200 career game

mark, and no other active player has accomplished this feat.

- Ovechkin was named the NHL's Second Star of the Week in the opening week of the season, the 28th time in his career he was selected as one of the

week's top-3 stars. Ovechkin leads the Capitals with three goals and five points through the first two games of the season.

Top Caps Facts

Double V

- Over his first two games of the season, Vitek Vanecek is 1-0-1 with a 1.44 goals against average and a .938 save percentage.

- Vanecek has stopped all 28 shots he's faced in the first two periods of both games he has started (NYR &TB)

- Vanecek has stopped 33 of the 34 shots he's faced at five-on-five (.971 save percentage), tied for the third-highest save percentage among

goaltenders with two games played this season.

- Vanecek finished his 2020-21 rookie season with a 21-10-4 record with two shutouts, a 2.69 goals-against average and a .908 save percentage.

- Vanecek joined Michal Neuvirth (27 wins in 2010-11) as the only rookie goaltenders in franchise history to record at least 21 wins in a season.

Vanecek’s 21 wins led all rookie goaltenders.

Wrath of Hath

- Garnet Hathaway is expected to play in his 300th career game Tuesday night against the Colorado Avalanche.

- Hathaway will play in his 125th game as a Capital after playing 175 games with the Calgary Flames.

- Over the last four seasons, Hathaway ranks ninth among forwards in hits (571) and tied for 68th in blocked shots (112), despite ranking 264th in time

on ice (2224:50).

- Hathaway’s 2.17 drawn penalties per 60 minutes of five-on-five play over the last five seasons ranks first in the NHL among players with at least 200

games played during that span.

Buzzing Line

- Through the first two games of the season, the line of Carl Hagelin, Nic Dowd and Garnet Hathaway have skated 19:40 together at five-on-five, have

produced a 78.38 shot attempt percentage (29 shot attempts for, 8 against), a 78.26 shots for percentage (18 shots for, 5 against) and 76.47 scoring

chance for percentage (13 scoring chances for, 4 against).

- Last year, the trio played all 56 games together, skating 517:43 and outscored their opposition 20-19 at five-on-five. They were the only Capitals

forwards to appear in every game and recorded the most minutes as a line.

- This season, Dowd has won 18 of his 25 face-offs (72%), only trailing St. Louis' Ryan O'Reilly (75%) for the highest win percentage among players with

at least 25 draws taken. Dowd won 11 of his 15 face-offs (73%) against Tampa Bay on Saturday, the highest win percentage among any player in that

Super Carly

- John Carlson has finished in the top-five in points among defensemen in each of the last four seasons, recording 44 points (10g, 34a) in 52 games last

season.

- Should Carlson finish in the top-5 this season, he will be the 23rd defenseman in NHL history to finish in the top-five in points in five straight seasons

and the first since Brent Burns from 2014-15 to 2018-19.

- Only Burns, Nicklas Lidstrom, Al MacInnis, Ray Bourque, Paul Coffey, Denis Potvin and Bobby Orr have accomplished this feat since 1970, and 18 of

21 defensemen to accomplish this feat and are eligible are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

- Carlson is 11 assists shy of passing Michal Pivonka (418a) for the third-most assists in franchise history. Should Carlson pass Pivonka, the Capitals

will be one of three teams with their top-three franchise assist leaders on their active roster, joining the Vegas Golden Knights (founded in 2017-18) and

the Winnipeg Jets (founded in 1999-00).
