EFFICIENT COLLECTIONEAST WASTE IS OUR WASTE COLLECTION PROVIDER. FOR EFFICIENT COLLECTION, RESIDENTS NEED TO OBSERVE SOME SIMPLE POINTS.

PLACING BINS AT KERBSIDE:• Place the bin out by 6am

on day of collection• Place waste materials in

the correct bin• Place the bin as close as

possible to the kerb, with the lid opening towards the street

• Allow at least 1 metre between your bin and obstructions such as cars, power poles, letterboxes and trees.

BINS WILL NOT BE COLLECTED IF:• Overloaded or material

protrudes from the top• Too heavy (60kg maximum)

otherwise bins can break or snap when being lifted

• Packed too tightly, as items will not fall into the truck

• Contain unsuitable items such as concrete, rubble, oil, steel, soil or wood etc.

LOW HAZARDOUS WASTENOT ALL HAZARDOUS WASTE NEEDS TO BE DISPOSED OF AT THE ZERO WASTE SA DEPOT.

PAINTDried and hardened paints that don’t contain lead can be disposed of in the general rubbish bin. There are a number of ways you can dry up excess paint.

SMALL AMOUNTS• Take the lid off the can and set it out to dry. Leave the

lid off for pick up so they can see the paint is dry and accept it

• Pour the paint on cardboard or newspaper in a thin layer and let it dry.

LARGE AMOUNTS• Mix in equal parts of kitty litter, sand, saw dust,

crushed corn cobbs, or any other absorbent material and let dry

• An easy-to-use, nontoxic product called Waste Paint Hardener shortens the drying process for acrylic and latexpainttoamatterofminutes.Youcanfindthisproduct in most local hardware/paint stores.

OILHouseholders can drop off used motor oils at any time and at no cost at the Newton Transfer Station, see page above for contact details.

THREE WAYS TO RECYCLE YOUR FOOD SCRAPS!

PUT FOOD SCRAPS IN YOUR GREEN ORGANICS BIN

EASY

Anything that once grew can be put in your green organics bin for composting. Food waste makes up around 40% of material placed in the general waste (blue) bins. By putting food waste into your green organics bin it can be turned into nutrient-rich compost. You can put food in loose, wrapped in newspaper or in a compostable bag.

Food scrap baskets are available from Council, coming with a roll of compostable bags. Compostable bags are clearly marked and are generally green or beige.

Please do not use bags labelled ‘biodegradable’, this is not ‘compostable’ – and never use plastic bags of any type in the green organics bin.

Ifyoufindyourbinisbecomingabitsmelly, storemeat and seafood scraps in the freezer until the day of collection. You can also line the bottom of your bin with several layers of newspaper to soak up moisture and reduce smells.

WHAT SCRAPS CAN GO IN TO YOUR GREEN ORGANICS BIN?

2FEED FOOD SCRAPS TO YOUR WORM FARMWorm farming is a fun way to turn your food scraps into a rich, soil-like substance called ‘castings’. Worm farms can go inside, outside or on balconies even if you don’t have a garden.

Worm castings are great for pot plants, growing seedlings and for potting soils. ‘Worm Tea’ the liquid produced by worm farms is full of nutrients and also great for your garden.

Worms don’t like meat, onions and citrus.

3 COMPOST FOOD SCRAPS AT HOMEComposting is a natural process that breaks down organic matter into rich, dark-brown humus, the organic component of soil.

Anything that was once a plant or animal can be composted, including: fruit and vegetable peelings, newspapers, shredded paper, used paper towels and tissues, grass clippings, weeds, tea leaves, coffee grounds, egg shells, small quantities of cooking oil, oldpottingmix, deadflowersandhumanandanimal hair.

Avoid placing meat or dairy in your home compost.
