Waste Diversion 101

CompostingGreenStripe® items are made from renewable resources like corn, paper, and sugarcane. This means that these products can be composted when you are done with them to make valuable compost instead of sitting in a landfill.

RecyclingBlueStripe™ items are made from recycled content materials. Recycled materials come from completing the recycling process. This is a great environmental benefit of our products. However, very few facilities can recycle these products over again.

Did you know? Lined hot cups and containers are generally not recyclable because it is not yet feasible to remove the plastic lining from the paper cup.

Even if you cannot recycle or compost these products, they still offer you a better environmental choice over tradition-al items made from unsustainable foam or virgin plastics that contain no recycled content or renewable materials.

2. Some facilities are drop-off only. Others offer curbside or dumpster col-lection for residential or commercial customers. Your waste hauler can help you understand your options. Be sure to check with your city for rebates available on your compost bill!

3. Separate your compostable food, yard, and foodservice waste from your recycling and landfill waste. Remem-ber, plastics of ANY KIND cannot be composted and organic waste clogs up the recycling facility. Divert as much as possible from the landfill.

Setting Up Composting

1. Finding your recycling facilities can be as simple as a phone call to your municipality or a web search. Call your waste hauler directly. Check with your city or county government. Search Earth911.com, www.epa.gov/epawaste, or www.kab.org.

2. Each facility operates a little differ-ently—some are drop-off only, others are single stream, and some require you to sort. The goal is to work with your recycler to make it easier for them to process your materials and keep as much plastic out of the land-fill as possible.

3. Separate your compostable food, yard, and foodservice waste from your recycling and landfill waste and remember to buy or request recycled content in the products you buy whenever possible.
