The 2 Bin System
Each resident has received a new gold bin before the new waste management program began in January 2011. This bin is larger in size, as it has been designated for containers and bulky items, while your blue bin will be for paper products. If you have any questions regarding our two bin program, please refer to our Q&A section located on pages 22 & 23. This will largely help our driver, as he alone drives the truck and collects your waste! The calendar in this brochure has been designed to assist you in knowing which bin to set out for collection each week. Each week is colour coordinated – either yellow or blue. Garbage will continue to be set out on the same day as recycling. The following pages will further explain all of the changes in our program, as well as all the new materials we are now accepting!

Waste Management Program Improvements
The Town of Smiths Falls has moved forward in waste diversion activities and thanks the residents of Smiths Falls for embracing this positive change. Our new beginnings have begun! That being said, we have enhanced our waste management program, to take another step in the right direction towards a more sustainable community. We hope to make residents even more proud of their community. Here’s What’s Working:
A 3-Day Collection Schedule All solid waste collections will be a 3-day schedule, Tuesday through Thursday. Please refer to the collection map in this booklet.
Continue to Recyclable Materials! Please continue to place as many recyclables as you can into your bins. A complete list is included in this brochure. Many of the new materials, especially plastics #1-7, are an especially significant addition as they are very bulky.
A Two Stream Recycling System
Continue to separate paper products (blue bin) and containers (gold bin). Each week you will alternate which bin you set out. Refer to the calendar in this brochure to know which week it is.
Swap Days twice a year June and August promoting reuse and will take place in June and August. More information on page 12!
Electronic Depot at REAL 85 William W ( REAL Deal Reuse Store ) is working with The Town and Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES). Electronics accepted Thurs. – Sat. 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Battery Recycling at Town Facilities All Town facilities, and the REAL Deal, have a “Smitty pail” for regular household batteries.
We diverted 38% of recyclables from the landfill in 2014.

In addition to our waste management program, here are some other environmental initiatives that have happened in the Town of Smiths Falls:
In 2011 we converted our streetlights to induction lighting! This change is environmentally friendly as induction lamps use both less energy and mercury per hour than conventional lighting, offering a cost savings of approximately 50% in both energy and maintenance. An additional perk is that mercury is in a solid form, allowing for it to be easily recovered if the lamp is broken, or for recycling at the end of its life.
Wastewater sludge is also being converted into fertilizer pellets. Due to changed legislation, we are now exploring residential use.

Compost available at the compost site! Electronic recycling is at REAL Deal Reuse Store, 85 William
St. West. Household Battery recycling is found at town facilities and at the
REAL Deal. Swap days are biannual – spring clean up and before students go

Hazardous Waste and re-usable items.

The Waste Diversion Act is changing to help us recycle and reduce costs associated with waste management. Industry innovations have added complexity to product package management. Government is asking for accountability and end producer responsibility to reduce costs, while still protecting the environment and landfills.

Garbage Tag price increase:- Due to additional garbage disposal costs (we sold 4,500 tags last
year). The Town of Smiths Falls has a garbage tag requirement for all additional items at a cost of $3.00 per tag.
- If you have two bags of garbage the third bag requires 1 tag. - All items that do not fit into a garbage bag will require two tags
to remove from the curb. - The following is applicable: - If you have one bag of garbage or two bags of garbage ALL
LARGE ITEMS REQUIRE 2 TAGS. - Large items are classified as: - Furniture – couch, chair, entertainment unit - White goods (fridge/freezer) have to also have a Freon free
sticker prior to removal. - Stoves, kitchen appliances, random garbage that cannot fit

- Don’t let your taps drip. Dripping Faucets can waste a lot of water.
Ontario Deposit Return Program
- You’ve been doing it with beer bottles for decades. Now you can add wine and liquor bottles to the mix. Return them all to The Beer Store and your deposit will be fully refunded. Containers collected through the Ontario Deposit Return System are recycled into high value products. All LCBO containers are accepted: glass, plastic and tetra-style boxes. Leaving LCBO containers in the recycling box costs us money!!! Keep them for bottle drives or better still return them.

- Compost site open during week May11-16 for you to take out leaves and brush if you missed curb side pick up. Your waste must be contained in a clear bag. (Brush to be bundled, no branches over 4 inches in diametre please).

- Visit our compost site during operating hours to help yourself to nutrient-rich compost, while supplies last. Open Saturdays from 8:00am – 4:00pm between May and November 21, 2015. Compost in your backyard. Composters $ 40.00 free delivery!
Swap Days
- Take Advantage of this summer’s new Swap Days events to pass along items you no longer want to someone who can use them. Place reusable items at the curb the Friday of the event weekend. If items haven’t been taken by Sunday, bring them back in. Simple. There’s an event weekend: June 12-14 and August 14-16 this summer, just in time for Spring Cleaning and Back to School!

June 2015 - New Waste Contract
Water Demand significantly increases over the summer months in the Town of Smiths Falls. We need to use this precious resource wisely. Here are some ideas to help conserve water this season: Water your lawn in the early morning, or evening Don’t water on windy, cool, overcast or rainy days. Use a timer on your sprinkler. Choose a sprinkler that fits the shape of your lawn and sprays large drops rather than
mist (which just evaporates). Don’t water excessively. A waterlogged lawn may turn yellow and develop fungus and
diseases. Too much watering can also lead to thatch and fertilizer leaching. Water only the grass, not surrounding walkways and driveways. Sweep sidewalks with a broom, not a hose. Use a rain barrel to capture rainwater for watering your plants; they will love it! Cover swimming pools when they’re not in use to reduce evaporation.

Cool Alternatives. Before switching on expensive, high energy air conditioners (central air uses 24,000 BTUs per hour), consider some ‘cool’ alternatives this summer:
- Keep doors and windows closed until evening. - Pull the blinds or drapes on windows the sun beams in. - Open some windows at night to let free, fresh cool air in.
- While air conditioners cost several dollars a day to run, a ceiling fan costs just pennies. Ceiling fans can make you feel up to eight degrees cooler by providing a circulatory breeze. For maximum energy saving benefits, get an Energy Star ceiling fan. These fans circulate an average of 15% more air than other ceiling fans, and

Kids need to be physically active for their optimal health, learning and development. Studies show that if your kids walk to school, they are more likely to be active through the day. Walk your kids to school, or their bus stop and then get on with your day:
- The percentage of children driven to/from school has increased from 16% in 1969 to 46% in 2001
- 20-25% of morning traffic during the school year is parents driving kids to school.
Be part of the solution! Keep your vehicle out of the school zone in school travel times.
Did You Know… An average office worker generates about 73kg of

Did you know… Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a television for 3 hours. Aluminum takes 500 years to break down in landfill. It’s the most valuable recyclable material in the blue box! Please remember to wash & crush your cans!! Ready for Winter Composting?
Make space in your composter this fall to ensure things don’t overflow by spring. Depending on how long you’ve been using your composter, there should be some finished compost at the base. Simply shovel it on top of your gardens, and let it work its way into the soil over the winter. Set aside a bag of dry leaves to mix with kitchen waste during the winter. Leaves are a perfect bulking agent and carbon source to balance your nitrogen-rich food scraps.

pumpkin, crab apples, corn stalks, and plant material! (Brush to be bundled, no branches over 4 in. diametre). We cannot predict leaf foliage; compost site is open for you until November 21, 2015 to take the remainder of your yard waste if you were unable to bag for collection dates. Note: closed November 21, 2015.
15 Minutes or bust! - Make a habit of walking to places within a 15-minute walk of your house. You’ll save
money and reduce pollution. Over half of vehicle trips are shorter than 2 km. Short trips burn the most fuel and pollute more per kilometer, because vehicles typically take ten minutes to warm up fully. Idling before you drive doesn’t help – the pollution happens whether you are idling or driving a vehicle that is not yet warmed up.
Make Dollars, Not Just Sense - Want to save as much as 30% on your yearly heating costs? Now’s the time to act.
Check around the house and fix any drafts you find – including gaps around fireplace dampers, air conditioners, attic hatches and doors. Nothing to it, and plenty to save.

landfill - Lower your electricity bill this month by switching to LED lights, which use 95% less
electricity and do not emit any heat. Put your indoor and outdoor Christmas lights on timers to save them running all night.

Questions?
“I put out my garbage at 8:00 a.m. but they didn’t pick it up?” All garbage and recyclable material must be at the curbside no later than 7:00am on the day of collection. We do not collect electronics at the curb side. Please recycle – see page 24 for details “I put out three items but they only took two.” You are only entitled to two items (e.g. two bags of garbage). All other items must have two $3.00 tags affixed to them if they are large items. Additional garbage bags require one tag. Tags are available at the Town Hall in the Finance Department. Call if placing large items at the curb. No electronics are accepted at curb. “What day does my garbage/recycling get picked up?” Please refer to the pick-up schedule on page 12 of this booklet. “Can I put a refrigerator or another large appliance out for collection?” Prior to disposal, call Town Hall to let them know there is an appliance at the curb. Freon must have it removed by a licensed technician. A sticker must be affixed as proof. It may then be placed at the curbside for collection. For Appliances over 15 years, you should contact Ontario Power Authority about the ‘Refrigerator Roundup’, which means free pickup and recycling of the appliance – no Freon removal necessary! “I put some yard waste in my garbage but they didn’t take it?” Yard waste WILL NOT be collected with regular garbage, and any bags that are mixed with yard waste will be left behind. Yard waste should be taken to the Compost Site and is collected twice a year in May & November– Check the EMC at these times for exact collection dates. See pages 12 & 23. “What do I do with my Christmas tree?” The Town will collect these trees the week of Jan. 7th at curbside. Please DO NOT put them in plastic bags. “What do I do with my paint cans, pesticide or broken glass?” Partially full cans of paint should be mixed together and taken to the “Take Back” Program closest to you. Rona Cashway in Smiths Falls is a partner. Place dry, empty cans in your yellow box. Pesticides are hazardous waste and must go to the Hazardous Waste Depot in Carleton Place. Broken glass may be placed in your garbage, however it poses a serious risk for waste collectors. Please place broken glass in a puncture-proof container, or wrap it in newspaper and then put it in the garbage. “May I leave my bags of leaves/grass at the gate when the Composting site is closed?” NO, YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR LITTERING! Wait until the site is opened. If this problem persists, the site may have to close. “If a person is found leaving any material at the gate to the compost site, they will be charged under the highway traffic act section 180 (Littering Highway Prohibited). The maximum fine is $500.” “The Gold Box is too big for me. Can I get a smaller one?” If you wish, you can bring your gold box in to Town Hall and trade it for a second Blue Box. Just remember that you will only put out containers or fibers on any given week. If you have more, just add another open topped container.

Orange Drop is a new program in Ontario dedicated to recycling household hazardous waste and special waste materials. Visit www.makethedrop.ca for an extensive list of materials that can now be recycled through this program and all local ‘take back’ partners. We are recycling batteries at Library, Arena and Town Hall. Look for “Smitty” and you will see the containers.

Green Waste
Backyard composters are still for sale at the Town Hall for $40 including delivery and guidebook! Compost Site: Opens every Saturday from May 2– November 21, 2014 from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The site is located along Hwy #43 (East of Hillcrest Cemetery). It accepts leaves, grass clippings and brush.
Need An Additional Recycling Box?
While blue and gold containers are preferred, you only need one to signal the driver. For additional storage you can also use a sturdy container that is similar in size, such as a laundry basket or plastic storage tote. Additional recycling boxes can be purchased at the Town Hall for Blue bin: $6.50 Gold Bin: $10.00 (larger size).

Visit www.additupontario.ca to calculate Energy Getting rid of your old fridge can help reduce your energy bill, big time. www.everykilowattcounts.com. This program will pick up your old energy-guzzling appliances, free of charge. To qualify, a fridge must be in working condition, and ten years of age or older. The program will pick up secondary appliances at the same time, including window air-conditioners and smaller refrigerators and freezers (bar/mini fridges) – provided they are in working condition and ten years of age or older. Book an appointment on-line or call 1-877-797-9473. Refer to the Q&A section if your refrigerator doesn’t qualify. Hidden Energy Thieves Computers, TVs, DVD Players and other home electronics use energy even when they’re turned off. 40% of all electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while these products are off. Consider unplugging electronics or turn off the power bar when you’re done with them.

Water Make a low-flush toilet: Try making your own water displacer, to
turn your toilet into a low-flush toilet. Simply take a plastic bottle 600mls – 1 liter, fill it with water and place it inside of the tank. This will reduce your water use per flush.
An Energy Efficient Showerhead reduces water consumption by 50-75% with amounts to a savings of more than 28,000 litres of water a year!
Garbage
Recycle in every room in the house! Many rooms including bathrooms, home offices, laundry rooms and garages are often neglected when it comes to recycling. Try hanging a nice fabric bag or simply placing recyclable items beside waste bins for recycling. In no time you will be regularly recycling toilet paper rolls, cleaner containers, shampoo and conditioner bottles, pharmaceutical bottles, office paper, detergent bottles, dryer sheet boxes, empty aerosol cans, paint cans, etc. Backyard Composting Made Easy: Just follow these simple steps: - Place your composter in a well-drained spot. You can speed things up by cutting out the sod under the composter to invite worms and microbes in and improve drainage. - It helps to cut material into small pieces before placing them in your kitchen bucket. Once your kitchen bucket is full, take it to your composter. - Mix the new material into the existing pile using a pitchfork or other garden tool. This also adds oxygen, a key component to successful composting. - Cover kitchen material with a layer of yard material or soil. This will add carbon and reduce the chance of odors & fruit flies. - Keep compost material slightly damp. - Harvest the finished compost. Use it on your lawn or garden as a natural fertilizer.
