We are challenging our residents to see if you can reduce, reuse or recycle more.
Thanks to your help our dry recycling rate has increased by 22% since the introduction of blue wheelie bins last year, but we would like to do even better by asking you to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfi ll.
This means reducing the waste we put in our green bin.
Trim your Bin is about thinking before you bin things - do I really need to put it in my green bin or can I reuse or recycle it rather than sending it to be buried in the ground?
Every tonne of green bin waste the Council take to landfi ll incurs a tax payable by the Council. By reducing our green bin waste and recycling more in our blue and brown bins, we save money and increase our recycling rates.
So let’s see how low can we go with green bin waste - and how high can we go with blue and brown bin recycling in Cannock Chase District.
Do your bit for the environment - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for Cannock Chase!
• Compost your food waste whenever possible, using your brown bin or by having a compost heap/bin in your garden
• Avoid buying disposable products, instead for example use cloth napkins, reusable crockery for a picnic, refi llable razors, lighters, pens and pencils
• Avoid unwanted mail - join the Mail Preference Service which will stop mail shots coming through the door. Go to www.mpsonline.org.uk or call 0845 703 4599
• Buy your fruit and vegetables loose rather than packaged, or select produce with recyclable packaging
Below are ten top waste minimisation tips:• Reuse products in your home, for example jam jars make great storage containers for a range of items
• Recycle unwanted items and clothes at your favourite charity shop
• Recycle your old mobile phone on various websites or some charity shops
• Reuse carrier bags and then recycle once no longer usable
• Replace disposable nappies with Real Nappies, you can even get money towards buying them
• Check out the Love Food Hate Waste website for tips on how to get the most out of food and leftovers www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
Reducing food waste is a major issue and not just about good food going to waste; wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year and has serious environmental implications too.
If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road. For more information visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by
households in the UK every year.
Home composting is the most sustainable way to manage and dispose of garden waste and some food waste.
Over one third of the contents of an average UK household bin can be home composted and garden waste can also be added to a compost bin.
At fi rst it may take up to six months before you start producing usable compost. But once you get going you will have a constant supply of compost made from your own garden and food waste.
Staffordshire Recycling Partnership (the eight district councils and the county council) are offering residents in the Cannock Chase area the opportunity to purchase a subsidised compost bin.
Compost bins can be bought for as little as £14 and water butt kits for £27
If you are interested in ordering a compost bin or want to fi nd out more visit

As a nation we
