Water is our most important natural resource! In water

supply systems and wastewater management structures con-

crete is the most commonly used construction material. Higher

plant throughputs, more efficient handling and new processes

for the treatment of fresh and waste water have given rise to

more demanding durability specifications. Concrete is an alka-

line material and therefore by nature not resistant to acid, and

conventional protective coatings, based on reactive resins, have

not always produced the desired results.

For more than 40 years MC-Bauchemie has been mee-

ting the challenges of developing permanent systems for the

protection of concrete and the restoration of damaged concrete

surfaces. The decades of research led to the development of

new mineral-based systems, which now, after 10 years in use,

Project Information: The climate exposed tanks have a surface protection system of MC-RIM. Project Information: The wastewater treatment plant of the city of Ternitz (population:approx. 15,000) in Lower Austriabelongs to the Wastewater Associ-ation Mittleres Schwarzatal and isa regional educational wastewatertreatment plant. During an inspec-tion it was discovered that theexisting polymer-coating had be-come detached from the substratein several places. Taking up-to-datefindings into consideration it wasdecided to use MC-RIM F, which isopen to water-vapour diffusion.

Project Information: Cracks in the concrete walls of thedigester tanks, if unsealed, wouldhave permitted the leakage of sew-age under treatment. Due to thepattern and location of the cracks, itwas neccessary to use a combina-tion of rigid and flexible resins. Theselection of resin was based onwhether the point of injection wasto form a single rigid element orwhether to allow for movement.Thanks to MC-Bauchemie’s widerange of products, the engineerscould easily select the most appro-priate material and consider alldesign factors.

Objective: Rehabilitation of the screw pumpand of one sedimentation tank

Project Information: The primary sedimentation tank ofthe watewater treatment plant inFriesenheim (southern Germany)was repaired with Nafufill KM 250and coated with MC-RIM. Insidethe screw pump the trough sur-faces of the Archimedean screwwere corroded, decreasing thedelivery rate. This not only led to a rise in energy costs, but alsocaused hydraulic problems be-cause of the increased backup inthe collector. After it had beenrepaired with the mechanicallyresistant MC-RIM, the pump couldonce again be operated at full capacity.

Project Information: The wastewater treatment plant at Frankfurt-Griesheim has an equivalent population capacity of1.35 million. It is as such one of the largest plants serving Frankfurtam Main. It is unusual in that theplant only comprises the mechani-cal purification stage and the wastewater is then pumped under theRiver Main to the biological purifi-cation stage located at Frankfurt –Niederrath. Damage to the concreteof the connecting pipe was repairedand also protected from furtherattack and corrosion by sprayingwith MC-RIM. In addition the en-closed intake structure was coatedwith Konusit KK 10 to provide per-manent protection against attackfrom biogenic sulphuric acid.

Project Information: The Changi Project is one of twogigantic wastewater purificationplants, which will in future purifyall of Singapore’s wastewater aspart of the restructuring of the city-state’s entire wastewater manage-ment concept. With regard to therequired reliability, only extremelyacid-resistant materials were con-sidered for the protection of thecovered elements of the facility.Thus MC-Singapore and MC-Bottropjointly devised the 14,000 m2 coat-ing project and ensured the neces-sary technology transfer, includingthe training of applicators.

Project Information: The Asten regional wastewater treatment plant (capacity 950,000population equivalent) serves theentire city of Linz as well as 37 near-by communities. The concrete soffitof the covered primary sedimenta-tion tank was subjected to severebiogenic sulphuric acid attack. Thescope of repair work involved theapplication of Konusit KK 10 as anacid resistant protection to the sof-fit, the interior and exterior walls aswell as the scraper treads.

Project Information: The plant at Constance treats andpurifies waste water from approxi-mately 320,000 households in thedistrict. In 2004 a project wasundertaken to change the use ofthe primary sedimentation tankinto an aeration tank. This processinvolved the removal of the exis-ting damaged and degraded epoxytar coating. Due to the nature ofsuch products extensive safetyprecautions were implemented toprotect operatives and the environ-ment. To provide the necessaryprotection against the aggressiveeffects of waste water in the futureMC-RIM and MC-RIM F were selec-ted as a safe and environmentallyfriendly alternative.

Project Information: After approximately 30 years ofoperation the Arnsberg treatmentplant (capacity 26,500 populationequivalent) no longer compliedwith legal requirements. It there-fore had to be repaired and ex-tended. MC-RIM was spray appliedto protect the exposed concretesurfaces and hand finished with aspecial rubber float to achieve thedesired surface texture. The valueof the project was approximatelyEuros 10.8 million.

Project Information: The drinking water tank built in1959 is operated by the water supply association Dörnberg andbelongs to the district of Heckers-hausen. In the scope of the resto-ration it was decided to use MC-RIM (7 mm layer-thickness)and MC-RIM F (3 mm layer-thick-ness) to permanently protect theconcrete. Before the project wasstarted compliance with all exis-ting regulations and specificationswith regard to products and appli-cation methods was confirmed toensure that the quality of the drink-ing water in the tank is not com-promised.

Project Information: Cracks in many concrete structuresthroughout the plant were leaking.For environmental, process-ori-ented and structural reasons thecracks had to be repaired. Project Information: The collective wastewater treat-ment plant Wehr, which is situatedin the district Öflingen-Brennet, isa two-phase biological plant withchemical post-precipitation. 50% ofthe wastewater treated here comesfrom the resident textile industry.After 20 years of operation, repairand protection measures for theconcrete surfaces became neces-sary. Project Information: Damage as a result of corrosionwas found on the concrete wallsand columns of the elevated watertank operated by the Saarbrückenpublic utilities board. The restora-tion plans called for systems thatwould guarantee a minimum ser-vice life of at least ten years. Todetermine this, extensive tests withvarious systems were performedon site. The assessment by an inde-pendent test institute resulted intop marks for the highly sulfate-resistant mortar-systems MC-RIMand MC-RIM F.

Project Information: Numerous cracks had enabled wa-ter to penetrate through the con-crete lining fostering the growth ofplants and roots which could havecaused further deterioration. The cracks were partially sealedagainst pressurised water with MC-Injekt 2033 followed by per-manent sealing, through injectionpackers, with MC-Injekt 2300.Thecombined use of MC-Bauchemie´sfoam and polyurethane productsensured a successful job.

Project Information: Rauch Fruchsäfte GmbH of Austriahas an annual production ofapproximately 160 million litres offruit juices. It became necessary toadd another sedimentation tank tothe company´s wastewater treat-ment plant. The original conceptwas to line the new tank with apolymer system but this was chan-ged to MC-RIM to enable applica-tion under adverse weather condi-tions which would not have beenpossible with the polymer system.

Project Information: The plant was built between 1980and 1985 in order to improve andmaintain the water quality of thepopular local recreation area TegelLake. It eliminates phosphatesfrom the tributaries Tegeler Fließand Oberhavel. The employed floc-culant caused heavy concretedamage on all three modulesthrough sulphate attacks. MC provided materials to meet the high technical specification and thereby facilitate execution of the project
