    Professionalproducts

    for a wide variety ofapplications

    Water supply

Whether from rivers, lakes or the ground water clean drinking

wateris aprerequisite forhuman life. Drinking wateris understood

as waterthat is so clean that it is suitable forhumans to drink or cook with.

The icons introduced on the following

page s will also be used below the produc t

description to help you identify the fields of

    application for eachproduc t.

In many countries the quality of this commodity is strictly monitored. Water

companies therefore have the task of thoroughlytesting and guaranteeing the

waterquality from the point of extraction, via treatment and transportation to

supplying the water to the end customer. Valves can assist here withperfect

technical solutions that meet all national and international require- ments

and therefore consistently satisfy the strict hygiene demands.

    Dams

Dams fulfil a variety oftasks. They are used to collect waterand stave

off the risk of flooding, to generate energy, to help make rivers navi-gable and to assure the supply ofindustrial waterforindustry and agriculture.

Special demands are placed on the valves in the bottom outlets. Due to the great

forces involved in large reservoirs the forces must be safely and reliably con-

verted without damage to the installation. This is associated with a high drain-

age capacity and large flow rates in the shortest possible time. These functions

must always reliably be available at all times. The use of valves in dams is a

particularlysensitive issue as they are often not used for many years and then

have to serve theirpurpose smoothly and reliably within a very short time.

    Water treatment

Making specific changes to the waterquality is known as watertreat-

ment. Substances are eitherremoved from or added to the water,

or certain parameters are adjusted (e.g. adjustment of the pH value). For this,

physical, chemical as well as biological methods are used. Being 100 % suit-

able for drinking wateris therefore of decisive importance for the valves used

    in these processes.

The extraction and transportation of drinking water, our most important commodity, place special

    requirements on the quality ofvalves.

valves guarantee safety and functional reliability of dams at alltimes.

Watertreatmentin modern waterworks or in desalination plants guar antees consistent andhigh

    quality of the drinking water.

Naturally all the materials, from the metals to the elastomers, used in the valves

therefore satisfy the current regulations of many international organisa- tions,

and this even applies to the smallest components such as O-rings.

    Storage installations

Many are visible from a distance, others are concealed under the

ground, but all water storage facilities serve the same purpose: they

store waterfor covering peak demand or bridging periods ofdisruption and at

the same time through their elevated position ensure the pressure required in

    the pipeline network.

In addition to the actual storage area, water storage facilities are also equipped

with an area for the entire installation technology responsible forcontrol, filling

and draining, for power supply etc. It is therefore vital that the valves used do

not affect the purity of the commodity water. The reliability of the valve is also

of the utmost importance in orderto assure its proper functioningat all times.

Frequently used are pressure and flow control valves, such as float valves with

which a floating ball automatically assure an adjustable minimum and maxi-

    mum water level.

    Pumping stations

Pumps are used in many watersupply systems. They are required to

transport waterto the supply areas or water towers, in the extrac-

tion ofnatural waterand drinking waterfrom wells or inpumped storage hydro

    powerplants.

We offera large numberof valves forpumping stations. The range extends

from pump start-up valves via pump by-passes and check valves up to air valves

for filling and draining the pipelines. In addition to operational safety and a long-

service life, the optimum design of the installation is at the forefront of this

application, as only correct dimensioning with optimum flow values can assure

long-term and cost-effectivepump operation with minimum energy costs.

    Pipeline network

Many thousands of kilometres of pipeline of various dimensions

ensure that drinking wateris available at all times and at the high-

est quality in every household and company. Water tanks and towers, as well as

numerous hydrants forflushing the pipeline networks and for supplying water

for the fire service supplement the system.

The special challenge for the use of valves lies in the fact that pipelines and

valves are generally buried in the ground. Many valves such as service clamps,

forexample, are not used there for long periods of time, but when called upon

they must exhibit full functional capacity in orderto avoid costly and sometimess

almost impossible construction work. Extreme robustness, optimummmppprrrooottt eccct ooo nnn

    decisive role.

Water storage facilities can be in thefo rm

of underground tanks or water towers.

Pumps are used in many watersupply

sys tems to transport water to the supp ly

areas or water towers, to extract natural

water and drinking water from wells or in

    pumped storage hydro powerplan ts.

    Municipal water d istribution encompasses

large supply pipelines for entire regions

down to the individual house connections.

    Fields ofapplication

    8

    Irrigation

One ofmankinds oldest technical applications are the irrigation of

fields foragriculture. This allowed the first advanced civilisations to

flourish along the Nile, Euphrates and Tigris and is still a decisive factor in feed-

ing the growing world population. Ofgreat importance here is that wateris used

economically, but also that sufficient i rrigation takes place for plant growth.

Equally important is the transportation of the water to the irrigation site with

as little loss and as a cost-effectively as possible. The functional range of our

valves thus extends from obtaining and distributing the water to the spray-

irrigation systems. Particularly for use in large-scale systems the valves must

be robust and simple to use, but at the same time inexpensiveand easy to install.

    Industry

There is hardly an industrial production process that can managewithout water, for which reason a reliable and cost-effective supply

of drinking, industrial and cooling wateris a decisive economic factor. In addi-

tion to water, other media must be transported safely, e. g. chemicals from

acidic to alkaline, gases or media containing foreign matter. Through the broad

knowledge of its brands can competently and flexibly react to even the most

special requirements and offer highly individual solutions.

The emphasis is on valves for extremely high pressures and flow rates, the

development and production of which requires an enormous amount ofexperi-

ence and skill. Just as important is our knowledge in relation to special coatings

and special materials to be used in case ofproblematic substances.

The constant irrigation of large agricultural

    areas is ofimmense importance forfeeding

    the worldspopulation .

The reliable and safe supply of waterand

other media is a basic factor formany

    industrialprocesses, ranging from the

chemical i ndustry, via metal processing to

    breweries.

The use of clean hydraulic power in

pumped storage hydro power plants or

    drinking water pipelines represents an

immportant component in the energy mix.

    Energy recovery

The use ofhydroelectricpowerplants is an important component in

the energy mix, particularly in orderto compensate forfluctuations

in solarand wind energy as can be implemented in storage powerplants. For

valves in such installations, in addition to many years of reliable and precise

operation, a high level of cost-effectiveness is of decisive importance. This is

achieved by, among otherthings, low zeta values.Precise regulation of the valve

over a large range is also important.

With its decades ofexperience, we have the necessary know-how, not only in

the development and production, but also in the optimum designing ofvalvesfor special solutions, such as an alpine hydroelectric power plant that was

equipped with needle valves of the extreme pressure stage PN 160.

    Power plants

Whetherfor coal-fired or nuclearpowerplants, large quantities of

waterare required for the cooling. The reliability ofcirculating water

systems in these applications is of extreme importance. Numerous successful

installations throughout the world are proof that valves are meeting these

    requirements.

Reliable cooling is required for the safe operation of power plant installations.

Numerou s installations throughout the world prove our competence in matters ofsewage

technology. The range of applications issupplementedwith biogas generation plants.

Before the gas can be used on the cooker at home, it has to travel through many kilometres of

    pipelines and pipe networks.

Special challenges can also be easily overcome, e. g. when the cooling system

is operated with seawaterand therefore the castings are provided with a spe-

cial ceramic internal coating. Hydraulic gravity actuators guaranteeing secure

operation if the power supply fails also provide additional safety forbutterfly

    valves and check valves.

Sewage and sewage treatmentThe central task ofsewage technology is the storage, transporting

and cleaning ofwaste wateras well as industrial sewage and rain-

water run-off. With its broad range we offer the most extensive spectrum of

    products on the European market.

For use in sewage technology protection against blockage of the passage is

the orderof the day. Smooth and abrasion-resistant passage surfaces are also

required. Particularly in the case of heavily contaminated sewage, great impor-

tance is attached to the choice of suitable materials and optimum protection

    against corrosion.

    Gas

Around 50,000 kilometres ofpipelines, some with diameterof up to

1.60 m, extend throughout Europe and connect the European trunk

pipeline networkwith the pipelines delivering the gas from Northern and East-

ern Europe. For distributionby local energy suppliers much smaller pipelines

are used to assure an effective, safe and environmentally-friendly energy supply.

Ourvalves are used in both networks and have all the necessary approvals and

certificates. When used in gas pipelines the impermeability of the valve is the

uppermost premise. Apressure test in accordance with international stand-

ards is therefore carried out on all our valves.

    Flexible solutions

    all-round care

with its ten brands offers the widest range of valves and thus provides even to

the most special tasks the right solution. Job-specific application, cost- effective

operation through optimised flow behaviour and minimal pressure losses,

low maintenance costs due to high product quality, long service life and

optimum protection against corrosion all this together guarantees that the

valves are economic solutions with a minimum cost structure in relation to the

overall service life of the valve (Life Cycle Costs).

This needle valve with gravity actuator

    and magnetic coupling also demonstrates

this know-how. The turbine has to reli-

ably handle up to 1200 l/s and be able to

    stop without water hammereffects when

    switched off.

The conic outlet valves have been designed

    for stringent requirements, operating con-

    tinuously with minimum strokesforseveral

years during day and night, unprotected

    against any weather conditions.

The flexibility can also be seen in the variety of actuating options that are

available to suit the place of installation or field of application, and which

thanks to standardised connections can also be changed easily at any time. Just

    a few examples:

Drive flanges for the use ofelectrical rotary actuators, possibly in combination

    with pinion gears

Hydraulic orpneumatic as well as gravity actuators

With an extensive accessories range from installation sets to street caps and

drain stones to fittings supplements the valves range thereby offering indi-

    vidual solutions for every job.

    More than just valves

Particularly in the case of complex technical installations, simply supplying the

products is not enough. Therefore, the experts are at your disposal for help

and advice during all life-cycle phases. Highly qualified teams at ourworks as

well as agencies throughout Europe and in more than 50 countries on all five

continents, work on creating first-class solutions with our customers.

Individual advice by our experience engineers and technicians starts as early

as the project phase. Optimum solutions come into being in dialogue with the

    customer, whetherforseries products orspecial designs.

It is precisely because of these made-to-measure packages that our

productsbroad range are particularly frequently used in difficult applica- tions

and installation situations. we also have our own test centres available for

material testing, project-specific investigations as well as for testing and

    analysing materials and components.

Highly qualifiedemployees in design, research anddevelopment, sales, manufacturing and

service guarantee optimum product quality and reliable operation for manyyears.

Ifnecessary, our employeesassemble the valves in our customersinstallation

and carry out the commissioning work along with their employees. Naturally,

this also includes training and familiarising the specialist personnelby way of

detailed operating instructions and training documents.

Nevertheless, this does not represent the end of service provision by us. We

also provide services during the long operational life of the valves. Regu- lar

inspections and maintenance ensure that the valves operate reliably at all

times. However, ifproblems should occur repairs can be carried out quickly on

site. Any required spare parts are rapidly avai lable even many years after com-

missioning. In addition, for more major repairwork technicians are available at

our works. We also provide these services forproductsby othermanufacturers.

    Headstocks, T keys, extension spindles,

rack and pinion actuators, surface boxes,

    coffret drainages, stop cockhousings,

    drilling machines, electric actuators,

Talflo taps, bolts andgaskets are just a

few examples of the wide range of our

    accessories range.
