An essential element of theseprojects is education on sanitationand hygiene, as well as the creationof a local Water Committee tooversee the long-term maintenanceof the water and sanitation systems.is Committee always includes
women, as they are the maincollectors of water and play a keyrole in a familys sanitation practices.
Founded by Sister Catherine McGowan, Sister of Charity Hin 1979, the Elizabeth Seton Centre provides services for childand their families, including pre-school and daycare programs
well as nutrition, medical and dental care. Managed and staeby local residents, the Centre is located in La Saona, one of thmost impoverished barrios (neighbourhoods) in Bani, DominRepublic.
While the Centre has historically used a well nearby, access habecome more dicult over the years. A new well is needed ongrounds of the Centre to ensure the health and well being of tchildren currently enrolled. is new well will provide a permsource of clean water to be used in nutrition recovery, cookingbathing the children, washing their clothing, watering the gardrunning the dental clinic, pharmacy and medical clinic.
is well project involves drilling the well itself, equipping it wa pump, and laying the pipes to bring the water to the Centreproject is a collaboration between several organizations, includSisters of Charity Halifax.
To date, the Sisters of Charity Halifax have donated well over $500,000 towater projects in Peru and the Dominican Republic. ese projects have helpedbring safe drinking water and sanitation systems to many families in need.
Peru
Your generous response to our
previous water appeal helped us
raise over $27,000. is money
went directly to a water project in
La Guama, Dominican Republic.
Were pleased to report that the
La Guama potable water system
is near completion, and soon
more than 20 families will have
access to clean drinking water. To
ensure the projects future success,
an initial 300 pesos was collected
from each family, which will be
deposited into a village fund tosustain the system into the
future. e families also helped
by volunteering to lay the pipes
connecting the water source to
the storage tank, and then from
the tank to their houses.
La Guama is very remote. Manyof the project materials needed to
be transported by mule, so like
many rural projects it has been
challenging and expensive.
many still need our help.
Just outside of Chiclayo, Peru, is a community knownas Nuevo Reque. Due to a l ack of aordable housing inthe city, many young workers have been forced to set uphomes outside of the city boundaries, on whatever freeland they can nd. Nuevo Reque is a proud and strugglingcommunity whose homes are built out of simple materialsthat provide a basic shelter. ere are no services norunning water, no sewage system but for these workers, itis their only home. And its population is growing, as moreand more workers are without housing.
Although this sounds like a very grim story, ourCongregation, along with residents from Nuevo Reque, isbringing water to this community. e Congregationhas already donated $115,000 to this project, but muchmore will be needed to provide clean drinking water tothese young families. e entire project will cost almost$380,000 to complete.
