Presenting a green initiative solution to save electrical energy

in urban cities

Our Mission

• To constantly develop and commercialise technologies into products bringing tangible benefits to mankind.

Problem statement

• Currently, the escape staircase of public buildings in urban cities are lit 24 hours a day.

• This escape staircase is only used during emergency such as occurrence of fire.

• But during such fire emergency, there is no guarantee that the electrical wiring will not be damaged thus causing the staircase not to be lit. The 911 terror attack was one such incident.

• Current lighting is not fail-safe during emergency.

Solution

• A self glow photo-luminescent paint can be used consecutively with the electrical lighting, thus saving half the electrical energy required to lit the escape staircase.

• The electrical lighting is switched on for half a period to charge the paint and later it is switched off for the paint to glow on its own.

• It is a fail-safe solution during emergency.

Estimation of cost savings

• Assume a flight of 24 stairs use one 100 W lamp. • The total kwh used per day for one 100W lamp will

be 2.4 kwh.• A litre of the self glow paint with a top coat

protective paint will cost S$ 100 and it can paint 7 square metres.

• If we only paint the flight of stairs with a 2 inch wide strip on each stair and one long strip on the side of the wall, one litre of paint will be able to cover 3 flight of stairs.

Page 7: Water Based Self Glow Photo-luminescent Paint

• Total electrical energy used for 3 flight of stairs with 3 100-W lamps in a year will be : 0.1 kw x 3 lamps x 24 hours x 365 days

= 2628 kwh per year.

• The latest tarriff in Singapore is S$ 0.2565 per kwh. *• (http://www.singaporepower.com.sg)

• Total cost will be (2628 kwh x S$0.2565) = S $ 674.

• If the paint is used consecutively for half the period, then the savings will be half or S $ 337.

• That is, the cost of the paint will be recovered in 3 to 4 months !

Comparison Summary Using current lighting system 24 hours a day

• 3 100-W lamps for 3 flight of 24 stairs switched on 24 hours a day.

• Total consumption of electrical energy per year = 2628 kwh

• Tarriff in Singapore = S$ 0.2565 per kwh.

• Total cost per year = S$674.

Using self glow paint consecutively with lighting system 24 hours a day

• 3 100-W lamps for 3 flight of 24 stairs switched on only for 12 hours a day while self glow paint glows for the other 12 hours a day.

• Total consumption of electrical energy per year = 1314 kwh.

• Cost per year = S$ 337• Total cost of paint used

amortised over 5 years = S$20.

• Total cost per year = S$ 357.

Conclusion

• For a building of some 15 storeys or 15 flight of stairs assuming only one escape staircase and 24 stairs per flight, the savings in the public building in Singapore will be 6570 kwh per year.

• Consider the saving of 1000 public buildings in urban cities, the savings will be tremendous at 6.5 million kwh.

• Another clear advantage of using the paint is that it is fail -safe. Should electrical wiring be damaged during emergency, the paint will glow instantaneously.
