WATER CONSERVATION

Reducing Run-Off Losses:

•Allows water to infiltrate onto the soil:•Contour cultivation•Bench terracing•Mulching , Lagoon levelling•Water channeling•Improved water storage systems

•Another way is to add chemical wetting agents and chemical conditioners to improve soil fertility and prevent run-off.

Contour Cultivation

Bench Terracing

Mulching

Lagoon Levelling

Water Channeling

Decreasing Irrigation Losses:

•Through the following irrigation losses can be reduced:

•Drip irrigation•Early morning or late evening irrigation•Using lined or covered canals•Growing hybrid crop varieties with lesser water requirements.

Reducing Evaporation Losses:

•This is effective in humid regions on sandy soil.•Horizontal barriers of asphalt placed below the soil surface increases the water availability and crop yield by 40%.

•A co-polymer of starch and acrylonitrile called super slurper can absorb upto 14oo times its weight.

Reuse Of Water:•The treated water can be used for:

• Watering lawns and gardens.• Washing vehicles and floors of buildings.

Preventing Wastage Of Water:

•The treated water can be used for:• Watering lawns and gardens.• Washing vehicles and floors of buildings.

Increasing Block Pricing:

•The consumer has to pay a proportionally higher bill with more use of water.
