Water is our element.

2

Water is our element.

Today, over a billion people around the world still

have no access to clean drinking water and even

in the industrialised nations, water as source of

nutrition is becoming an increasingly precious

item. The reasons for this development are not

only climate-related, but also due to environmental

problems and shrinking ground water reserves.

Accordingly, water treatment and wastewater

purification, as well as new technologies for

wastewater reclamation and reuse, are of growing

significance gobally.

WABAG has dedicated itself to taking these

challenges with a range of problem solutions,

which is both comprehensive and highly advanced.

With our innovative technologies and services we

make a sizeable contribution to the provision of

secure water supply and wastewater treatment in

both the municipal and industrial sectors. The

know-how that we put into practice is based on

more than 80 years of experience with water as

an element. Indeed, our trademark is a profound

understanding of everything relating to H2O.

The scope of the services that we can offer extends

from consulting and planning, financing and

installation, to the operational management of

plants and systems. For our customers this means

Guaranteeing top quality drinking water.

Surface water

As a rule, multi-stage treatment processes are

required to make certain that drinking water

obtained from surface sources is suitable for human

consumption at all times and does not cause any

problems with regard to storage and network

distribution. We have complete mastery of these

multi-barrier systems, which derives from the

experience gained during innumerable projects.

We have carried out intensive development work

regarding surface water treatment (e.g. with

membrane processes), extending back over many

years and have implemented a sizeable number

of the resulting innovations in the form of large-

scale solutions.

Ground water

The quality of ground and spring water is

increasingly subject to the negative influences of

anthropogenic substances, agricultural pollution

and the growing presence of chlorinated

hydrocarbons. WABAG has developed and

optimised technologies, which are specifically

designed for ground water treatment. We offer

top processes, ranging from biological

denitrification and advanced oxidation, to

membrane technologies (MF, UF, NF, RO, EDR).

In many locations, a secure drinking water supply

in the desired quantity and quality is impossible

without the use of the latest technology. Specific

technologies are employed in line with the source

of the water and the extent of its pollution.

WABAG has established itself as an ideal partner

for this communal challenge with an extensive

selection of chemical, physical and biological

processes for the treatment of surface and ground

water. Our leading technological competence is

underpinned by a high degree of process know-

how and a profound understanding of customer

needs. We engineer complete plants, which

guarantee safe adherence to the required

parameters, are designed to accommodate future

developments and are characterised by high levels

of technical reliability.

Technological progress is currently expanding the

possibilities offered by traditional environmental

protection. In the municipal wastewater sector,

the ecological focus is on water protection and

wastewater reuse, which adds up to a need for

the highest possible degree of wastewater

purification.

WABAG provides complete, state-of-the-art plants

for just this purpose. We offer the best possible

individual solutions for every requirement, from

carbon to nutrient removal. As key technologies,

we employ one- and two-stage activated sludge

processes, biofiltration (BIOPUR®), moving bed

biology (FLUOPUR®) and membrane bioreactors.

Conventional processes with one- or two-stage

activated sludge systems are used as a standard

solution for average to high cleaning requirements.

Biofiltration is employed as an alternative or

supplement, whereby this has proved to be especially

advantageous where space is at a premium and

stringent requirements exist with regard to integration

into the surroundings. This in-house developed fixed

bed technology also impresses through maximum

process stability and efficiency.

Innovative membrane bioreactor technology, which

is based on the combination of modern membrane

filtration (ultrafiltration) and the proven activated

sludge process, has already been used successfully

in a series of large-scale customer plants. It stands

out due to very high cleaning performance in

combination with relatively low operating costs.

Sludge Treatment

For WABAG, sludge treatment is an integral part

of efficient wastewater treatment. In addition, the

anaerobic stabilisation of sewage sludge can secure

an ecologically and economically advantageous

supply of energy through the use of biogas.

WABAG has developed its innovative BIOZONE®-

AD process with an eye to improving the efficiency

of sewage sludge stabilisation.

In industry water is required that corresponds with

the differing needs of respective processes (power

generation, cooling, etc.). Therefore, a secure

water supply in terms of both quantity and quality

is of enormous importance to industrial enterprises.

Technically optimised, cost-effective water

management systems make an important

contribution to successful, long-term economic

strategy.

WABAG supplies the correct individual concepts

and solutions for this purpose. With our compre-

hensive competence portfolio, we cover virtually

every need from conventional processes to high-

performance systems (e.g. membrane processes).

We attach special value to reliable, low-maintenance

systems that offer high economy.

Boiler feed water

Boiler feed water is obtained from a wide range

of raw water sources. The related treatment

processes are tailor-made to match the respective

raw water composition and the required boiler

feed water quality.

The major processes involved consist of make-up

water treatment (e.g. with the process steps pre-

treatment and demineralisation with silica removal),

condensate polishing (e.g. with the process steps

filtration, cation exchange and mixed bed filtration),

thermal and chemical degassing.

Meeting the highest environmental standards.

Industrial wastewater contains a diversity of

impurities and therefore for this reason alone, its

treatment constitutes a special task. In addition,

effluent standards are constantly being tightened

up. Therefore, in practical terms the treatment of

industrial wastewater demands an extensive

knowledge of process technologies and their

economic combination.

Due to the experience gathered during numerous

projects, our engineers know how to fulfil customer

requirements and mandatory stipulations in full.

The aim is to achieve a perfect combination of

efficiency and economy. Naturally, this not only

involves a focus on investment expenditure, but

also the minimisation of running costs during the

plant life cycle.

Our team has designed and implemented waste-

water treatment plants for customers from a variety

of industrial branches, including aerobic and aero-

bic/anaerobic plants for the foods industry, membrane

bioreactor systems for the chemical industry and

wastewater reuse schemes for diverse branches.

Innovative and flexible

In the case of biological, anaerobic wastewater

treatment we employ conventional processes and

space-saving, high-performance reactors. We have

completed a large number of large-scale plants

on the basis of the world’s most frequently used

UASB process. Other systems are also utilised in

accordance with the characteristics of the

wastewater, e.g. the activated sludge process or

our high-performance BIOPUR® system for less

polluted water. In the case of maximum cleaning

requirements (e.g. water reuse) we employ

membrane processes with submerged or external

membranes.

For many years, WABAG has enjoyed an excellent

reputation as a reliable partner for the supply of

complete solutions in the desalination technology

sector. We have planned, installed and successfully

handed over more than 100 plants. An additional

customer advantage derives from the fact that we

are one of the few companies worldwide, which

offers the complete range of desalination

technologies (thermal processes, reverse osmosis).

Saving energy and costs

Desalination plants separate sea- and brackish

water into two flows consisting of a freshwater

stream (condensate in thermal processes, permeate

in reverse osmosis) and a stream with a high salt

concentration (brine or concentrate). Every

desalination technology requires energy for this

separation process, which is supplied to the system

by thermal or mechanical means. Our com-

prehensive know-how ensures optimum energy

efficiency and hence economy in this regard.

Ensuring sustainable customer advantages.

As a result of the completion of over 6,000 plants

worldwide and long-term experience in operational

management, WABAG disposes over extensive

expertise and recognised competence in the area

of water-related operational management. Not

only a large number of local authorities have opted

for WABAG’s full service capabilities, but also

leading industrial companies have turned the

responsibility for their water supply and wastewater

treatment over to our specialists.

In the long-term, this results in considerable cost

advantages for the respective owner. During the

complete plant life cycle, our services contribute

to the optimum use of resources. In short, effective

water management and the securing of high water

quality are only achievable within the scope of

holistic solutions. These are precisely what we

offer, in line with customer needs and the individual

optimisation requirement.

Our individual co-operations incorporate a diversity

of familiar models such as DBO (Design-Build-

Operate), BOT and BOOT.

As a result of our profound business and technical

know-how, we secure our customers operative

management of the highest standard, with the

sustainability provided by a leading company in

the water and wastewater sphere.

Sustainability through water reuse.

In view of the limited availability of water and the

necessity of preserving existing resources, the use

of water recycling concepts within the scope of

sustainable water management strategies is of

enormous importance. Water recycling increases

availability to private, commercial, agricultural and

industrial consumers and also enhances the security

of supply. Therefore, it is of special significance in

arid and semi-arid regions.

In recent years, WABAG has carried out a series of

projects for water reclamation and reuse for both

municipal and industrial purposes. In the industrial

sector, we have planned and completed wastewater

reclamation plants to the complete satisfaction of

customers in the pulp and paper, foods, textile and

chemical industries, as well as for oil refineries. In

addition, we have also realised the world’s first direct

potable reuse plant for the conversion of wastewater

into drinking water in Windhoek/Namibia, an

achievement of which we are especially proud.

As a company that thinks in the long-term, we

constantly make every effort to develop innovative

solutions to the benefit of our customers. To this end,

we carry out a great deal of research and

development, whereby current focal points consist

of membrane technology, high-performance biological

processes and sewage sludge reduction. One highlight

in this connection is formed by the development of

moving bed biology (film biology) for the treatment

of municipal and industrial wastewater. The new

FLUOPOR® process provides excellent cleaning

performance in combination with low investment and

operating costs. The first large-scale plants using this

technology are already in successful operation.

Systematic efforts in the name of progress.

Innovat ion

Another example of our innovative capacity is

provided by the BIOZONE®-AD process, which has

been developed in order to raise sewage sludge

digestion performance. This process is based on

digested sludge disintegration using ozone. It

ensures greater efficiency in the case of overloaded

sludge digesters, a markedly higher reduction in

organic solids and higher biogas yield. Pilot testing

to demonstrate the capacity and economy of the

process has already been successfully concluded,

which means that it can soon be employed on a

large scale. The MARAPUR® process constitutes a

further development of the proven membrane

technology with its core element, the Megamodul™.

18

Particularly in the global plant building field,

proximity to the customer forms the basis for

mutual success. The WABAG Group represents a

leading multinational player with companies and

offices in 18 countries and a focus on emerging

markets in Europe, North Africa, Middle East,

South East Asia, China and India. This market focus

means that we are able to offer our customers

more intensive support.

Our claim is that on the one hand, we facilitate

maximum access to our know-how in line with a

local competence strategy, while on the other

quickly reacting to market trends and develop-

ments. We support municipal and industrial

customers in various world regions. The specific

needs that result are covered by competences,

which have been developed on the basis of

ongoing market observation. In addition, we enter

strategic alliances in the form of co-operations

and joint ventures as an additional important

aspect in a market-oriented services range.

For us, knowing what the customer needs also

means the introduction of modern management

and monitoring tools for operational management

and thus an increase in competitiveness, as well

as the training of local and international specialists.

Our credo is that flexibility, networked know-how

and individually oriented solution competence

leads to success.
