Water
The most important resource.
People can survive without food for several weeks, but
without water we would die in less than one week.
During summer time, do you want to go
swimming or go to beach?
What on Earth do you Know about Water?
Cover 80% of Earth’s surface. Only 1% of this water is fresh we can use.
97% - Saltwater 2% - Frozen in glaciers
Use 168 gallons of water a day.
Move in a never-ending cycle Water you drink = Water a dinosaur had drunken
Be limited and threatened by pollution.
Today’s Dying Water
Child and Dying Fish Dying Duck by Oil Spill
Dying Ocean because of Dumping and Floating waste
For Water
Make a choice, where do you want to live?Unfortunately, today’s water looks more like in the right picture.
Also, water condition is becoming even worse than ever.
What are causes of water pollution? What do we have to do for saving our water?
What are the Causes?
Toxic Matter Agricultural Chemicals Oil Spill
Other factors Sediment, Acids, Pathogens, Organic Matter, etc.
Toxic Matter
A great of poisonous compounds get into water.
Minamata Disease
In the 1950s, industries around Minamata Bay in
Japan discharged so much mercury into the bay that people were poisoned by mercury that had found
its way into the local seafood.
Agricultural Chemicals
Be applied to fields to stimulate the growth of plants.
Enter streams and lakes. Be occurred seriously
damage at a lake or stream.
Lead to a drop in the population of fish.
Oil Spill
When oil is spilt at sea,
a number of weathering processes produce
changes in the physical and
chemical properties of the oil's behavior at
sea.
Recently, the oil tanker SS Minnow attempted to dock in Gilligan's Bay. The ship accidentally ran aground and is leaking oil!!
However,
not all marine oil pollution is sourced from oil spills.
What are Solutions?
Prevention Clean-up Conservation by yourself
How can we solve the problem?
Prevention
Appropriate legislation Pollution prevention is an aim of lawmaking. As simple as regulations about dumping used motor oil
onto the ground or into sewage system As complex as the regulations controlling the effluent
from industries or municipal sewage treatment facilities
Don’t released previously Toxic or disease-causing materials So harmful that natural systems can’t handle
Clean-up
Physical treatment
Filtration. By this time the liquid should be almost clear and have very few particles in it.
Chemical treatmentAfter filtration, the water requires addition chemicals.
Biological treatment
Using bacterial is critical for the purification of water.
12 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO SAVE WATER
1. Check toilets, pipes, and faucets for leaks. 2. Don't use the toilet as a trash can. 3. Put a plastic bottle in the toilet tank so that your toilet uses
less water. 4. Take shorter showers. 5. Help a grown-up install water-saving showerheads in your
home. 6. Take baths instead of showers. 7. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. 8. Use automatic dishwashers only when you have a full load. 9. Use the washing machine only when you have a full load. 10. Turn off the water while cleaning vegetables. 11. Keep drinking water in the refrigerator. 12. If washing dishes by hand, don't leave the water running.
