TELECONFERENCE ASSIGNMENTS Assignment 1: Red Cross Swim Kids

Review the worksheets for Red Cross Swim Kids (Levels 1-10) and be prepared to talk about one level, telling the group: • what you find exciting about the level; • what has stayed the same; and • what has changed? (Each teleconference participant will be assigned a level on the call so review all levels with this in mind).

Assignment 2: Seek and Find

• Complete the Seek and Find activity found on pgs. 13 and 14 of your Red Cross Swim Water Safety Instructor Trainer Update- Participant Guide April 2005. As you work through this activity, jot down your thoughts about the following questions. Be prepared to speak about your answers to these questions during the workshop

• How did the organizing tools (chapter headings, indexes, labelled tabs) help you find information?

• Were you able to anticipate which manual you would find the information in? Why or why not?

• Was there anything you were unable to find? Why do you think you couldn’t find it? What additional resources would have helped?

Assignment 3: Orientation In-service Review the Red Cross Swim Instructor In-service Facilitator Guide and be prepared to tell the group which session you think would be the most fun or rewarding to facilitate, and why.

Research Based Changes

Red Cross Swim was built on a three-pronged approach to research:

• Extensive market research conducted and managed by Ipsos-Reid;

• Red Cross’ 10-year drowning report; and• Injury Prevention research.

And extensive consultation with experts in the aquatic field.

Slide Two

Research told us...

• Parents – value water safety and having their children learn to swim

• Authorized Providers – want a quality program supported by quality instructors

• Instructors – want to be better prepared to teach

Red Cross Swim Instructor In-service Facilitator Guide Final 2005. This is intended to be used as an in-house training session, delivered to staff at the facility. The guide is available electronically on the AP Website. This in-service session cannot be used in place of the WSI recertification workshop for recertification of the WSI certification.

Transition Issues AquaQuest Program- AquaLeader and WSI courses may be run until August 2005 (AL candidates must be 15 ¾ in time for AquaQuest WSI course)

Water Safety Instructor Recertification Workshops April 2005 The 2005 WSI Recert participant materials include the Water Safety Instructor Recertification Workshop Participant Guide 2005-2006 and the Water Safety Instructor Recertification Supplement Handout March 2005. To support the Red Cross Swim program we added a section “Focus on Fitness”, as well as the Water Safety Instructor Recertification Supplement Handout. The Supplement Handout provides WSIs with an overview of revisions made to the Red Cross Water Safety programs. WSITs are to use the WSI Recertification Workshop Facilitator Guide 2005-2006 with these materials when conducting a WSI recert and the participant receives the WSI Recertification Guide (one per participant). This package will be used for the remainder of the recert cycle with a new recert package to be implemented in April 2006. WSITs and WSAITs with current contact information on file will receive the 2006-2008 facilitator guide in the mail in March 2006.

WHAT’S ONLINE? www.redcross.ca Water Safety Week will focus on a healthy, safe summer Each year, the Canadian Red Cross designates the first full week of June as national “Water Safety Week”, designed to educate Canadians about safe behaviour in, on, and around water. Water Safety Week for 2005 was June 5-12 with the theme of “Have a Healthy, Safe Summer”, focusing on: being safe in and around water by getting trained, always supervising children, and wearing your lifejacket when boating; wearing adequate sun protection; and making good food choices when packing your cooler. During the course of the summer, Authorized Providers are encouraged to consider planning a community event of their own. An event kit is currently in the works and will be posted to the AP website by June 20th. With the support of two national sponsors – Nestle and Ombrelle – a number of promotional items will be available to support your “Healthy Safe Summer” events, including: tattoos, posters, and an online contest on the www.redcross.ca website where contestants can enter to win one of 25 “Healthy, Safe Summer” prize packages (which will include a first aid kit, sunscreen, a towel, and other items). The contest is online now and will close July 30th.

Boatsmartcanada.com: www.boatsmartcanada.com is our boating safety website (with French and English options). This year’s “BoatSmart” campaign will focus on getting boaters to wear lifejackets with the message, “Close by isn’t close enough.” TV, radio and print public service announcements to support the campaign have been produced and were supplied to broadcasters in early June. On June 30th, Red Cross will promote “National Lifejacket Day” across Canada with media events and an online contest that offers opportunities to win the grand prize of two Manual Inflator Lifejackets from Mustang or one of ten prize packages of family pack of lifejackets. The contest will run online until 10 am ET July 27th 2005. To find this contest, you can either go to the BoatSmart website or visit www.redcross.ca and select the picture of the PFD with the caption “National Lifejacket Day Contest, I Wear It!” The BoatSmart website contains a resource kit with lesson plans for Water Safety Instructors to teach boating safety and proper use of lifejackets. The new TV and audio PSAs will be posted there shortly. Boating Safety Resources While on the site, explore the other fabulous resources to be found here. If you select Boating Safety Resources, you can download “Lifejackets: the best one is the one you’ll wear. Book of lesson plans”. This is a book of lesson plans developed for WSIs to assist them in teaching the current information about PFDs and lifejackets. Currently, this information is identified for the AquaQuest Program; we will be updating these resources this fall to reflect the levels in the new Red Cross Swim Kids program. Other resource topics on this site include Alcohol and Boating, PFDs and Hypothermia, Ice Safety and a Boatsmart Quiz for children. Red Cross 101: The Red Cross website has a volunteer orientation session online. This can be used in your WSI course as an assignment for the AWSI or WSI Candidates. http://www.redcross.ca/sites/english/rc101 or http://www.croixrouge.ca/sites/francais/cr101

Scheduling your Instructor Development classes To help you provide a great learning experience for your Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) courses, Red Cross offers the following course scheduling suggestions:

o Include in-water and class time every day of the course;

o Don’t schedule any longer than eight hours on each day; more than that will overload your candidates and decrease learning retention;

o The AWSI course content is 30 hours long. Don’t forget to build in extra time for breaks, lunch, etc.;

o Administrative duties are not scheduled as part of the course; you need to add on a few hours when booking your Instructor Trainer to run the course;

o Administrative duties can include: planning the course, marking assignments, assisting with Teaching Experience, reviewing Teaching Experience assignments, mid-course evaluation, set-up and clean-up time each day;

o A useful formula for calculating administrative time is to add 10-20% of course time - for a 40-hour course, factor in at least four hours of admin time for your IT.
