Thanks to their special combination of relief, vegetation, sea and mountains, the Costa Brava and the Pirineu de Girona make up an exceptional natural setting whose uniqueness lies in the plurality of micro-environments it embraces. Our coastline, for example, offers a magical combination of itineraries, flora, fauna and seascapes that is difficult to find anywhere else.30% of the total surface area of the Girona region is protected due to its special natural interest. Within this framework, work has been done particularly on preserving the nature parks, marine reserves and protected areas as the finest examples of the virtues of the area.During your stay, don’t miss the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Marshes and Cap de Creus Nature Parks, the Medes Islands Marine Reserve or the Albera Hills National Interest Nature Area.Among the protected areas, in addition, we can single out Ses Negres, the Formigues islands, Illa del Ter and the massifs of the Montgrí, Gavarres, Cadiretes and Guilleries.

Blue is the colour of the distinctions awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education for the quality of waters and services of the beaches and harbours of the Mediterranean. The Costa Brava has 35 blue flags which certify the environmental management carried out to care for our main attraction, the sea, and the attention we pay to providing the best services, even in the smallest details, to ensure you a comfortable stay.

Hidden caves, small coves, secret corners. Pines that shade the water, powerful cliffs, the smell of the sea… the Costa Brava. Stroke by stroke, at your own rhythm, without noise or hurry, doing sport and enjoying the sea. Come with your own kayak or hire everything you need at one of the specialised centres; you can also join in a guided excursion to be sure of discovering the best of the Costa Brava.Short excursions for beginners, longer journeys for experts, courses in Eskimo rolling and basic navigation: the kayak instructors and guides of the Costa Brava place all of their professional expertise at your service.

100% sport, 100% fun, that’s water-skiing. Skill, speed, balance. Never tried it? Now you have the chance, guided by the teachers of our centres. With three or four sessions you’ll be carving your own wakes. You’re a skier but you don’t have a boat or skis? Don’t worry, we have everything you need, including expert water-skiing skippers.Try your skill with wakeboarding, too. These boards have revolutionised traditional water-skiing, offering more spins, jumps and soakings! What more can you ask for?

Wind, speed, hanging between the sea and the sky, total blue, adrenaline, excitement… Soar with your sail to breathtaking heights, then splash down onto the sparkling water; gliding, almost flying, your board driven along by the wind, further, faster… On the Costa Brava, especially in the bay of Roses and the gulf of Pals, you’ll find the large spaces you need to best enjoy your sport, and professionals to teach you and hire equipment. And, what’s more, a PWA World Windsurf Championship event has been held for over ten years at Sant Pere Pescador, in the bay of Roses. The sea, the wind and you, don’t miss it.

WINDSURFING / KITESURFING

Sailing is a combination of tradition and innovation, relaxation and speed. It’s enjoying the sea, carried along by the cleanest and quietest of energies, applying the finest technique, making the most of the boat. If you’re stimulated by the independence of sailing and terms like ‘luff’, ‘gybe’, ‘close-haul’ and ‘list’ mean nothing to you, the schools of the Costa Brava are waiting for you. If you’re already the skipper of your own yacht, come and sail among the blue and green of our shoreline.

‘Thrilling’ is the word that best describes sailing a catamaran. These craft are spectacularly fast and easy to handle: in just two days you can learn the basics, but watch out! - the simplicity and speed of sailing a catamaran, even with light wind, can be truly addictive.

If you want to cruise from one town to another, visit coves that are hard to reach by land and enjoy the sea with all of the family, from the youngest to the oldest, choose one of our cruise trips. The choice of itineraries is as extensive as our coastline, and allows you not only to discover its beauty but even to immerse yourself in the underwater world by taking a cruise on a glass-bottom boat. You can choose from excursions to discover the scenery, others with time to take a swim or disembark in another town, and glass-bottom boats for watching the fishes in freedom. The sound of the water, the wind and the sun are all yours, too.

Experience the sea for real: instead of being merely a spectator, become part of the blue. See the profile of the coast from out at sea and enjoy the golden light of winter. Disembark wherever you like. Move around in freedom. Do exercise and work in a team. Run long reaches before the wind. Forming part of the crew means all of these things. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to sail. You can hire a boat with or without a skipper, for one day or by weeks: whatever you want, whenever you want.

MULTI-ACTIVITY

Experience the sea and enjoy it in a thousand different ways! On the Costa Brava you can do every imaginable type of water sport: ski bus, semi-rigid motor boats, sailing and motor boat hire, paddle boat hire, night snorkelling, kayaking excursions combined with other sports, stag and hen parties, and activities for schools... it is all right here at your fingertips.

And if you prefer, we can organise a longer tailor-made programme with different activities of your choice. We live here on the Costa Brava all year round, so we quite understand that you will not have enough with just one day...

Enter the incredible adventure of underwater life. Bream, wrasse, sponges, starfish and fan mussels - a whole world waiting for you to discover. If you know how to swim, all you need is a tube, goggles, fins and a neoprene suit to stay in the water as long as you like. On the Costa Brava you can practise snorkelling accompanied by professional guides, with first-class equipment and boats that will take you to the richest and most fascinating corners of our coastline. If you’re already an experienced snorkeller, make the most of one of the most attractive areas of the Mediterranean. You choose: sheltered coves, islands and islets, undersea meadows and the nature reserves of the Cap de Creus and the Medes Islands. The sea as you’ve never seen it before, within your reach.

Imagine a coastline designed just for you: a series of cliffs that plunge into the sea, with rocky corners teeming with life, nature reserves inhabited by grouper fish over 25 years old, and large, luminous caves where you can play with the natural lighting, submerged hills, shipwrecks, multicoloured gorgonians and colonies of red coral. Now open your eyes - you’re on the Costa Brava.Add to this setting the long tradition and dedication of the Costa Brava in this sector: more than 30 diving centres located in 16 towns all along the coast offer you all the necessary services, from equipment hire to courses for all levels.EVERYONE talks about diving on the Costa Brava - now you know why.

DIVING

The Costa Brava yachting harbours are located in a privileged geographical setting, on a shoreline of great natural beauty and diversity bathed by the benign Mediterranean climate. The harbours in the area offer a wide range of high-quality services and amenities, as well as a shared concern for environmental conservation. Sailing enthusiasts can practise all sorts of water sports and activities here, and use the harbour amenities as a base for their boats.

The Costa Brava boasts over 12,200 moorings of different lengths in its 17 yachting harbours, with amenities specially designed to meet all requirements. All the harbours in the area belong to the Catalan Association of Yachting and Tourist Harbours, which aims to unify criteria in order to guarantee that all the amenities provide first-class European standard services and infrastructures.

Tela Marinera provides a voyage into our seafaring past in the days of lateen sails.

On board the Rafael, a boat built in 1915, crew members will be immersed in the past and will find out how seafarers worked in former times, when coastal navigation with lateen sails constituted the main transport system along the Costa Brava.

Tela Marinera proposes an active sailing experience, with crew members participating and becoming involved in the voyage, taking part in manoeuvres, hoisting the sails, taking the helm and generally enjoying life on board in the sailing style of days gone by.

Tela Marinera is based in Palamós harbour and uses antique boats such as the Rafael and the classic Baronesa speed-boat for activities related to the sea and the discovery of our coastline: tourist routes and excursions for the whole family, as well as sports, gastronomy, educational and cultural activities...

BESIDES THE ACTIVITIES...Culture

‘Vitality’ is the word that best describes the cultural variety offered by the Costa Brava. Tradition and modernity are expressed in the festivals, museums, festivities, exhibitions and markets, in a territory where human settlement dates back over 3,000 years and has left its mark in many places. The range of cultural visits is so wide that it can be divided into thematic routes to suit everyone’s interests. Of special interest is the Dalí Triangle, formed by the Dalí Museum in Figueres, the Castle of Púbol and the House-Museum in Portlligat. In religious architecture, essential visits are the Carmelite convent in Peralada or the monasteries of Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Sant Pere de Rodes. The routes through medieval towns like Pals, Peratallada and the old town of Tossa de Mar, the botanical gardens of La Selva coast and the visits to the Iberian settlement of Ullastret and the Greco-Roman remains

of Sant Martí d’Empúries tell us the story of the land and also invite you to explore further inland.Music is one of the principal protagonists, with a vast range of performances including the long-standing, prestigious festivals of Torroella de Montgrí, Peralada and Sant Feliu de Guíxols, or more recent ones such as those of Pals, Cap Roig and Blanes, or the Festival of Religious Musics of Girona.Music and tradition combine in the region’s contests and festivals of sailors’ or tavern songs, sardana gatherings and annual festival dances, along with meetings of ‘giants’, fire festivals, maritime processions and popular festivities, in a living, participatory mosaic which extends all along the coast throughout the year.

The cooking of the Costa Brava shares with other Mediterranean cuisines the basic elements that have made them famous all around the world: fish, vegetables, olive oil, poultry, fruit and so on. A cuisine of taste, often based on simple, healthy dishes. It is essential to taste one or more fish dishes, whether char-grilled, fried or cooked in a typical ‘sea and mountain’ casserole, not forgetting the rice dishes for which Catalan cuisine is justly renowned. The wines of the local Denomination of Origin Empordà-Costa Brava ensure a fitting accompaniment.

The Costa Brava is not just a coastline. There is also a whole inland area full of pleasant surprises, with paths and trails for exploring charming places, as well as many land and air activities for you to enjoy.

Hiking is becoming more and more popular nowadays, and the area offers optimum conditions for enjoying this sport. Walk along the coastal paths, taking in the exceptional panoramic views as you wind in and out along the shoreline; discover the large number of signposted trails, mostly organised in networks which allow you to tailor your route to your own requirements. All this is here for you to discover on the Costa Brava, and also in Pirineu de Girona, where you can climb

in the eight counties of the province will be delighted to help you to discover paths where the thrill of the descent and the strain of the ascent will make you feel alive. And if you prefer to go off for several days, don’t miss the circular routes, e.g. Raids al Vent (Alt Empordà County), Bi6000 (Ripollès County) and Trinxat BTT (Cerdanya County).

In this area, we have mastered the air and the heady thrills of heights, with one of the major sky-diving centres in the world located at Empuriabrava. If that sounds a bit too fast for you, why not opt for a balloon flight, and fill your senses with colours, aromas and new sensations while you float gently through the blue Girona skies.

peaks of about 3000 metres.

If cycle tourism is more your thing, we have just what you want. The greenway will speed you down from Pirineu de Girona to the Costa Brava along a disused narrow-gauge railway line, now an ideal space to enjoy cycling with all the family. And if the greenway is not challenging enough for you, there are hundreds of well-signposted level paths for you to explore beautiful nature spaces, discover small medieval towns, or simply cycle from village to village amidst spectacular natural surroundings.

If you want bigger thrills, then it’s mountain-biking for you. The six ATB centres located

If white is your colour, don’t forget about skiing! Four alpine ski stations and one cross-country ski station await your visit in Pirineu de Girona, a little over one hour from the best beaches of the Costa Brava. The Ski Girona brand groups together Vallter 2000, Vall de Núria, Masella, La Molina and Guils Fontanera, which together provide all the snow sports options in the area. And if you prefer to enjoy the mountains in warmer weather, remember that the ski stations become leisure and adventure centres during the summer months.

CLIMATE

PREVAILING WINDS

The geographical and topographical characteristics of the Costa Brava mean that, according to the period of the year, there are prevailing winds which affect the various sections of the coast in different ways. Summer sea breezes are common to all of the coast and particularly notable in the bay of Roses. The famous tramuntana (north wind) mainly affects the north, where it can blow hard offshore, although the rugged profile of the coast always offers sheltered corners. The gregal is another northerly wind that can blow with very variable intensities in closely adjoining sectors. The west winds off the land, which are common at night after a sea breeze, are gentle, making anchorages in the finest coves very pleasant.
