When Lewis Edson Waterman got hold of the fountain pen, it was a dripping, blotting, incon-
sistent thing. As the son and brother to woodworking craftsmen, and with an intense desire to
understand, Waterman spent years solving the imperfections of a tool who’s basic principals had
barely changed since the beginning of written history.
During his disparate carriers of carpentry, teaching, book selling and insurance brokerage,
the pen was a hobby, a passive interest of his. When his health forced him to retire from a high
pressure position, designing and hand building an effective beautiful pen became his entire focus.
He used tiny jeweler’s saws, and fine materials to turn his strange little interest into a business, a
factory, a corporation, and a permanent change to the art of writing. When Lewis Edison Water-
man got hold of the pen, it was a tool. After a lifetime of refinement, the fountain pen is a sleek,
elegant, craftsmanly instrument with timeless impact.
