April is a fantastic month for gardening! Whether you’re planting vegetables or climbing plants, now is the time to do it. 16th - 22nd April is National Gardening Week, aiming to get as many people as possible in their gardens.

Grow your ownNow April is here, its time to get your vegetables in the ground or in grow bags outside. If you didn’t get a chance to plant up your vegetables over the last couple of months, we have a fantastic selection of potted fruit and vegetables available now from just 99p for a tomato plant (9cm pot).

If your planting seed potatoes this year they should be in the ground by the end of the month unless your planning a crop for Christmas. Be sure to keep the soil moist all through the growing season and avoid getting the leaves wet to avoid disease.

Also don’t forget to plant up your herb garden. Herbs look, smell and taste fantastic and are really easy to grow. Plant them straight in the ground, in a window box or even in a pot on your windowsill. All month, get two 1 litre potted herbs for just £5!

Its also time to start planting up your shallots. Set shallot cloves broad end down and cover with ½ inch of soil or less. Space cloves 6 to 8 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart. This month, get your shallots ready and take advantage of our 3 for £6 offer on packets of £2.49 shallots.

Whatever you are planting, be sure to use a quality fertiliser or manure. With the right nutrients in your soil, you will get a bumper crop of tasty fruit and vegetables. If you need any advice, one of our experienced, friendly staff will be happy to help.

Gardening in April•There still is time to plant trees and shrubs.

However, by mid month it will be a little late to transplant large trees or shrubs, so do them now.

•The months of March, April and May are ideal for pruning evergreens.

•April is the month for planting summer flowering bulbs like dahlias, gladiolas and lilies. Mix bulb fertilizer and manure into the planting soil.

•Plant annual seeds of asters, cosmos, marigolds, zinnias in the garden.

•When all frost danger has passed you can move your stored fuchsias and geraniums outdoors.

•When they have finished blooming, you should deadhead your spring flowering bulbs. Do not cut off the green foliage yet! These green leaves continue to grow for a few weeks, and provide the bulb with food for flowering next year.

•Divide perennials like daylilies, delphiniums, Iris, chrysanthemums, daisies, and phlox. The additional plants you create can be traded or given to friends, or moved to a new area of the garden.

•Hybrid Tea Roses should be fertilized prior to buds beginning to bloom. Using a systemic fertilizer will help prevent insect infestation later in the summer, as it feeds your rose.

•Plant new rosebushes before growth starts and buds swell.

• If you have a pond or pool you should set aquatic plants any time after the middle of the month.

Lawn Care

The spring season is an important time for getting your lawn into top shape for the following months. What you do now in the spring by way of lawn care, will determine how well your lawn will cope with the wear and tear of day to day use, and also it's ability to withstand drought or even water-logging during the summer months.

Prepare for your first cut of the year this month. Give your mower a quick health check and make sure the blades are set high. The first cut should always be high as not to damage the soil.

Treat your lawn with feed, weed and moss killer. This will give your lawn that all important boost to help it look fantastic through the summer months. If you have a large garden, its worth investing in a spreader to keep the coverage of the feed even.
