From the Helm…..

November 2011

As I write this article I think back over the past week and think about a week ago Saturday when Vicki and I spent the day finishing the winterization and storage work on our sailboat Liberty so she is officially “put to bed” for the winter. Then yesterday as the newest board member of Lakeshore Yacht Harbour we spent the day wrapping up and closing the marina for 2011. I guess the season is officially over, as sad as that is and as short as it has seemed. This is always a depressing time of the year, but then if we could be on our boats 12 months of the year I suspect we wouldn’t cherish the time we have on our boats. I trust you will spend the off season with fond memories of a great boating season and planning the cruises of next year.

Our October General meeting was a great evening that I am sure any of you who were there will certainly agree. We had Jon and Sally Whitbeck from Montague with us sharing their 4 year circumnavigation. It was an incredible story and a fabulous evening.

Well, this is the final “From the Helm” report I will be writing as my year as your Commander comes to an end November 5. It has been a privilege serving as your commander and I know that as I pass the gavel to Curt Campbell as your new commander, GRSPS is in good hands. Please support him and step up to the “plate” to assist.

Next year I will be serving as assistant to Dan Rightmire who will be your new SEO and I look forward to staying involved especially with the education side of GRSPS.

I hope to see you at the coming Change of Watch and the December Christmas party. Make sure to see the flier elsewhere regarding the Christmas party and get your registration in early.

Cheers,

Bob Rehkopf, Commander

From the desk of your Executive OfficerFrom the desk of the Exec…

As we enter into a new squadron year, I will be contacting members to serve as chairs of the various committees under supervision of the Executive Officer. How about you? Executive Department committees and chairmanships include, Legislative Officer, Public Relations Officer, Safety Officer, Liaison Officer, Cooperative Charting, Radio Tech Officer, Boat Show, Advertising, Law Officer, and Vessel Safety Check. These are great opportunities to get involved in the squadron and to give back to the organization which has provided you with your safe boating education. Whether as a chairman, assistant chair or committee member, if you have an interest in any of these areas, please contact me and let’s see what’s available. Iask again, how about you? And if not you, then who?

Diane Stehouwer has again agreed to chair the Vessel Safety Check program. We enjoyed a great year of VSC activity with about 13 or 14 examiners doing courtesy exams on over 180 boats! Assisted by John Strauss, the committee provided the necessary brochures, rule books, forms and decals making it possible for examiners to hold events at a number of area marinas and we even have one examiner who is not done yet! Terry Grotemat continues on his quest to outdo everyone else in D9 with the number of examinations completed. Terry led the squadron last year and undoubtedly will repeat that effort. Hopefully, we will conduct another Vessel Examiner training session over the winter which will provide you with the opportunity to become a certified VE. The more members who are able to conduct examinations, the more boaters we can serve…and the less work and time required from each examiner. Join with us as we provide a vital service to our fellow boaters and spread the word about power squadron, in the process.

The Boat Show is coming up in February and we need your photos to update the CD we use in our booth as an attention grabber. Boating activities, events, safety issues and even mistakesare all worth a photo. Send them along to Denny Webb or me so we can accumulate them and use them to make our presentation more effective.

A special invite goes out to newer members to serve on the committees I listed above. If you have some expertise in advertising, public relations or marine electronics and would like to serve on a committee, please do not hesitate to talk with me about it. We want you to be an active part of the squadron.

Vessel Safety Check –End of year report

Lt Diane Stehouwer P Chair

The Summer has flown by and it appears that Autumn is serious about taking over.

I am very pleased with the performance of our Vessel Safety Examiners this year.

I believe we may earn some awards as we did in excess of 180 Vessel Safety Checks—Wow! Terry Grotemat did nearly 80 himself. There were others who also worked very hard to get us to this level and I am very grateful for their desire to ensure boating safety.

As always we are looking to increase the number of Vessel Safety Check Examiners. Come join us!
