HEAD DOWN TO QUAY STREET BEFORE THE END OF JULY To get an idea of the size of Alice’s cutting face, head to the port on Quay Street. Te Haerenga Hou – the artwork on display till the end of the month is a cover for Alice, done by a local artist, Graham Tipene. CHILDREN GETTING ONTO SITE Children are following in Ralphie’s footsteps and entering our site via Oakley Creek. They have been sighted within metres of our piling rigs. Our site is not safe for children and we cannot guarantee their safety. We are presently looking at ways that we can close off our site at the stream. Please speak to your children to let them know the dangers of coming on to our site and if you know of anyone who is accessing our site, please tell them to stop doing so as the risk to their safety is very high. NORTHERN APPROACH TRENCH Excavation work continues in the Northern Approach Trench in preparation for the arrival of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) later next year. Traffic switches and lane updates We are currently constructing a new section of pavement on the westbound off ramp to allow a traffic switch to move vehicles away from works while we build a new column and abutment for one of the ramps. Part of this switch will be permanent as traffic will be using the completed final pavement at the western end of the ramp. Widening works on the westbound on ramp are almost complete with the switch planned for the near future. The switch will move traffic away from the island on Great North Road and allow for the building of a column for a ramp. Works are expected to take around a year. The Northbound lanes of Great North Road under the motorway will be narrowed in the next week to allow for a column to be built right next to the road. Temporary barriers will be in a place for the six months this work is estimated to last. Staging work continues on the Great North Road off ramp. This is to enable us to build an access bridge to start work there. Piling works Piling has started on the on/off ramps on the northern side of the north western motorway. This work is expected to take approximately six months to complete. We have completed four columns on different ramps so far. Piling work continues for ramps 1 and 2 with work on the abutments starting soon. Services relocation on Great North Road From Sunday 21 July until 15 August we will be relocating gas services in the Great North Road Interchange area. This work will involve trenching, installing the services, backfilling and reinstating the road. To minimise traffic disruptions, this work will be done overnight from 9.00 pm to 5.00 am with lane closures and some diversions in place. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE GREAT NORTH ROAD INTERCHANGE? A MACHINE CALLED ALICE The TBM naming competition has given us a name for our TBM. ‘Alice’ was the winning entry submitted by 9-year- old Branden Hall from Everglade Primary in Manukau. You can follow Alice’s journey on Facebook. www.facebook.com/AliceTBM ALICE ON THE HIGH SEAS Alice will arrive in Auckland next week which will see the 100 components she has been broken into for shipping, arrive at our site in the South. Over the next few weeks we will begin assembling Alice which will require working around the clock, seven days a week for the next three and a half months.
