Ride2School Day Tomorrow is National Ride2School Day. All children are encouraged to ride, scooter, skate or walk to school on Friday 17th March, 2017. All children on wheels are reminded to wear helmets. (This includes skaters and scooters.) To guard the security of the bikes/scooters children are asked to leave them in the racks provided. When these fill up the children are allowed to walk bikes etc. down the walkway and leave in the areas set aside for the day which will remain out of bounds all day. Hope you all enjoy the day. Thank you to Ms Stevens for organising this event. Newsletter Feedback Over Term 2 we are planning to review our newsletter format and structure. We welcome any feedback about our newsletter and suggestions for improvement via email to [email protected] with the subject heading “Attention Mr White: Newsletter Feedback”. Also, if any of our community members have expertise in graphic design and communication, we would love your advice and professional support to improve the look of our newsletter. Please contact Mr White if you are interested. What’s On weekly updates

Part of our communication strategy for 2017 is to strengthen our community’s awareness of local events and activities that are happening in our school. Look on our Facebook account for the “What’s on” posted each Sunday afternoon to highlight any changes of routine for the week ahead.

Leadership Day I was pleased to accompany our Student Leadership Team to a one-day Leadership Conference at Tower Street Public School on Monday. I was so proud of our leaders who represented Wattle Grove PS with outstanding manners and made great contributions to the discussions with other schools. The primary students were guided by mentors from Moorebank High School and the day involved discussion about student leadership.

Easter Hat Parade and Raffle Our Easter Hat Parade will be held on Thursday 6 April starting at 11:30am. Everyone is welcome to attend as our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students will be parading their hats and the P&C Easter raffle will be drawn. Please see more information about our Easter celebrations in this newsletter and through our Skoolbag App. Thought for the fortnight Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. —Lao-Tze Wishing you a great fortnight ahead. Clint White Sam Wilson Principal Deputy Principal

Year 1 Report What a wonderful start to the year the children have had. It is great to see how they have grown up and settled into Year One routines. In English we are studying imaginary texts, in Mathematics we are learning about 2D shapes, length, data, addition and subtraction. We all enjoyed participating in our dance, Zumba and sports lessons. The children are very excited for our Ride2School day on Friday! Thank you to the many parents and friends that assist in our classes. Don’t forget to contact your class teacher if you have any concerns about your child and we look forward to catching up with you at our upcoming Parent Teacher interviews. Year One Teachers

News from the Office

If your child is absent, there is no need to call the office (unless illness is for more than 3 days), you can send either a Skoolbag notification/absent note through the app or on the first day the child returns to school send a note and /or medical certificate explaining the reason for the absence. This MUST be done on the child’s return to school or within 5 days. If you are going on extended leave for more than 5 days, contact the office for appropriate paperwork – this must be completed before going on leave. All of these notes can be lodged through the CHUTE. Thank You

THINK UKNOW PRESENTATION Holsworthy High School will be hosting a ThinkUKnow presentation on 27th March at 6pm and all parents, carers and teachers are encouraged to attend. ThinkUKnow Australia is a cyber safety education program that educates parents, carers and teachers about how people are using technology, the challenges they may face online, and how to help them overcome these in a safe and ethical way.

ThinkUKnow Australia is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Microsoft Australia, Datacom and the Commonwealth Bank. The program is delivered in collaboration with policing partners New South Wales Police Force, Northern Territory Police, Queensland Police, South Australia Police, Tasmania Police, Western Australia Police, as well as Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.

The presentation will be delivered by a local law enforcement member and an industry volunteer. The presentation covers issues relating to children and young peoples’ privacy and security online, their relationships with other users and their online reputation. It provides insight into the devices young people are using, as well as the popular websites, apps and social networking sites they’re accessing.

This is a fantastic opportunity for you to learn more about young people and the online environment, and how you can help them to be safe and responsible users of technology.

For more information, you can visit www.thinkuknow.org.au or contact Lisa Kenneally (Holsworthy High) on 98252888 or [email protected]

If you are interested in attending could you please RSVP to Lisa Kenneally.

Defence School Transition Aide (DSTA)

Defence News – Defence recognises the significant contribution of Australian Defence Force families in supporting military members in their duties. The 2017 ADF Families Survey is an opportunity for ADF families to tell Defence about their experiences and opinions of military life. This year’s survey will focus on partner employment and awareness of support services for military families. This information will play an important role in the planning and development of initiatives effectively targeted at the real needs of ADF members and their families. The survey is sponsored by the Chief of the Defence Force and coordinated by Defence Community Organisation in partnership with Defence Families of Australia. Please follow the link below to participate in the survey. https://defencesurveys.com.au/survey/ADFFamiliesSurvey2017.aspx?ver=773607772 Deployments and Absence - Please ensure you let your Class Teacher, DSTA or Office know if you have a Member away. Tutoring - Education Assistance Scheme (EAS) - Remember it’s never too early to begin tutoring; you have 18 months from your new posting date to take advantage of the Education Assistance Scheme. Tutoring can begin at any time of the year for students so be sure to take advantage of this scheme before your 18 months in your new posting location ends. Application forms and information is available from the DSTA.
