Our kindergarten students at the
Elementary Center are learning
about pitch in music; how some
tones are high, some are middle and
some are low. They are getting
good at aurally identifying high,
middle, and low sounds. The kinder-
garteners have explored pitch
through listening, moving, and play-
ing instruments, which included
playing the tone chimes. “Popping
Corn”, “The Tugboat” and “Dr. Suess
We Love You” are a few of the
songs that our kindergarten stu-
dents enjoy singing.
Our fourth grade students at the Elemen-
tary Center have been working hard at play-
ing the recorder. They are able to play
many songs from the “Best in Class” record-
er book and they can even play in two-part
harmony! Keep up the practicing fourth
graders. Our fourth graders can also sing
in harmony. They are able to sing a three-
part round called, “Sandy McNab”, and they
can sing a four-part round called, “I Love
the Mountains” (this is one of their favorite
songs). The fourth graders have also begun
learning songs for their musical play, “A
Kid’s Life”! All fourth graders will be per-
forming the musical on May 6th. There will
be a letter coming home with more details
about the musical.
Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 4
The third graders at the Elementary Center
have been exploring Melody. They can aurally
and visually identify how a melody moves: by
step, leap or repeat, and they can create their
own melody on the piano using steps, leaps, or
repeating tones.
Soon the third grade students will compose
and play their own melody. During music, our
third graders have also learned about a song,
and can sing the song called, “Follow the Drink-
ing Gourd”. This song, and book, tells the sto-
ry of how a song helped to free the slaves. If
you are interested in learning how, ask a third
grader! The third graders have also begun
learning songs for their musical play, “A Kid’s
Life”! All third graders will be performing the
musical on May 5th. There will be a letter com-
ing home with more details about the musical.
The first grade students at the Ele-
mentary Center are exploring the Per-
cussion Family of instruments. They
are learning that percussion instru-
ments are played by either hitting,
rubbing or shaking the instrument.
They are learning by sight and sound
the names of our classroom percus-
sion, for example, the cabasa and the
castanets and orchestral percussion
instruments such as the snare drum
and the timpani (kettle drum). Some
of the songs our first graders enjoy
singing are: “Chicken Soup with Rice”,
“The Angel Band” and “One More Riv-
er”.
Our second grade students at the
Elementary Center know all about a
musical scale, and they can play one
on the xylophone and the Boom-
whackers. The second graders can
sing the song “Do Re Mi” from the
“Sound of Music” from memory.
This song has helped them learn the
syllables and signs for a scale. Us-
ing three pitches of the scale, our
second grade students created
their own melody. “The Old Woman
and the Pig” and “There’s a Hole in
the Bucket” are two other songs
the second graders enjoy singing.

CLOTHING AND SNEAKER DONATIONS
If you have clothing and sneakers that your children have outgrown, we can always use
them in the nurse’s office. We especially could use pants in smaller sizes (size 6 or 8
jeans or sweatpants) and smaller size shoes (sizes 12 to 3).

Library lessons in 3rd and 4th grades
Students in grade 3 and 4 are re-visiting areas
in the library that are not “favorites”, but con-
tain great books for reading.
We have read a variety of poems by Jack
Prelutsky and explored his website. In addition,
we talked about Chinese New Year and Dr. Seuss
(for biographies). Plus we re-visited EduTyping.
This is great practice for learning to type. Stu-
dents can access it from home. The license ID
is senecahs. They should know how to log in oth-
erwise!
GRADE 2
The second graders are learning
about SAFE websites. We explored
a variety of NASA based websites.
Students can explore them at home

First Grade Library Lessons
The students are exploring various authors and
simple chapter books. Students have listed to

other read alouds. First graders are encouraged
to take out picture books and easy non-fiction,
but are given a small selection of chapter books

Second Grade News Our second graders were extremely busy in February. There were Ground Hog day activities to do, the
one hundredth day of school to celebrate, our Friendship to party to enjoy and President’s Day activities to
complete. We also had The Mandy and Randy program from Erie Bank come to our classrooms. They taught us
about money and told us how to start our own savings accounts. E.B. Bear was excited to shake hands and give
hugs to us after the program. Please continue to give your child opportunities to count money and make change
whenever possible. Last but not least, please remember to send in those Box Tops!! We want to earn many
items for our school.
Thank you for your ongoing support!

FOURTH GRADE NEWS
Wow! We can’t believe Spring is almost here! Fourth graders are
busy preparing for the PSSAs. In Math, the students are learning about
fractions and decimals. We will be tackling geometry soon. In Reading, we
are studying story structure and character development. Be sure to con-
tinue studying multiplication and division facts!
First Grade News
First Grade has held three Positive Paw Morning Meetings so far this year. This is when we meet in the gathering area to greet first grade friends from other classrooms and to honor those students who have earned a Positive Paw from their classmates’ votes. The character trait for October was Responsibility, for January it was Tolerance, and for February it was Kindness. Here are pictures of our proud Positive Paw recipients from each month! We look forward to awarding more Positive Paws in the months of March and May.
Third Grade News
The third graders had a very busy and productive month! We started off the month by celebrating the 100th day of school and dressing up like we are 100 years old. It seems like this group of students will age very well! Students and families got involved in a home project this month of creating an ecosystem, the results were stunning! The projects lined the hallways of the third grade area and were a sight to see for all students in the school. This month was spent working on various reading strategies, writing personal narratives, and developing all of our telling time and elapsed time skills. We also enjoyed celebrating kind-ness and friendship at our Friendship Celebration. Thank you to all of the parents who have helped with projects, Valentines, sending in box tops, helping their child dress up as 100 year old, and all of the many other ways that you support education. We appreciate it all!
