Congratulations Paris Rock for organising
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea held last
Tuesday in the school grounds. Paris, along
with the help of Ms Sipkes, Lani and Shannah
raised $726 for the Cancer Council through
donations and raffle tickets. Thank you to the
sponsors who donated prizes and to all who
participated. Everyone enjoyed the sumptuous
morning tea and musical accompaniment
provided by Mr Wayne Brennan and his music students, Ebony and Abigail.
Year 12 Biology Depth Studies
Students in Year 12 Biology are currently completing their depth studies
on disease. The depth studies were launched with an excursion to the
UNSW Rural Clinical School in Port Macquarie, where university lecturers
and medical students led the students through a model of a disease
spreading through a population. At the end the students were ‘tested’ to
see if they were infected, and from this they had to determine who patient
zero was. A highlight was getting to see the medical school’s plastinated
human specimens.
Students are now studying a disease of their choice, and conducting first
hand investigations related to that
disease. More on this to come in a
future newsletter.
Year 11 Biology Cane Toad Dissections
This term Year 11 Biology students have been learning about the
organisation of living things. A series of dissections have been
undertaken to help students gain a deeper understanding of
structures in multicellular organisms and how they relate to function.
For the culmination of the dissection series, male and female cane
toads were dissected by small groups of students. Nobody vomited
or fainted which was considered a win.

UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE, PRT MACQUARIE CAMPUS LATEST NEWS
Changes to courses at University of Newcastle Port Macquarie campus
The University of Newcastle currently offers nursing, midwifery and primary teaching courses at
its Port Macquarie campus. Today Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky announced that the
University will no longer offer new undergraduate enrolments.
We will, of course, support all currently enrolled students in their local studies, continuing to
teach and support the existing full-time students through to graduation. The majority of current
students will complete their studies by 2022. The University will work closely with part-time
students to identify and plan individual pathways and options for completion of their degrees.
The University will focus its future efforts on post-graduate programs and research
opportunities, working collaboratively with Charles Sturt University, the Port Macquarie Base
Hospital and the Mid North Coast Local Health District, and other local stakeholders.
While this decision represents a change of focus, the University of Newcastle will remain a key
higher education presence in Port Macquarie and the Mid North Coast region of NSW, and I am
looking forward to continuing to strengthen our presence within your school.
The Wauchope High School Mock Trial Team chalk up another victory
On the 14th June Wauchope High School's Mock Trial team of legal eagles travelled to Port Macquarie with Mrs Thornton and Mr Johnson to compete against the team from St Columba. The outcome was another victory for Wauchope High School's team which continued its undefeated stretch. The setting was the Historic Court House with Mr Tas Tasdemir of Tasdemir Lawyers volunteering his excellent services as magistrate. He was well assisted in these duties by Wauchope High's own Marie Ely. With the setting providing inspiration both teams brought their 'A' game and
the legal battle came down to the final closing arguments.
Standing on the defence Wauchope had two first class witnesses, Larnah who was the picture of innocence despite being accused of trying to burn down her boss's house. And Tyler making his debut performance and channelling his inner Ryan Gosling. Helping Larnah get off the hook was solicitor extraordinaire Grace ably assisting top barristers Matthew and Piper . Proving that they could in fact handle the truth this elite legal team defended their client and tore into their opponents arguments and so won a well earned victory. Coffee cups and soft drinks were raised afterwards to victory, Legal Studies teacher Mr Houlahan and the next Mock Trial round to come.

Rugby Union Gala Day Kempsey 18/6/19
Under 14
Our Under 14’s Rugby Girls played in a
Rugby Union Gala Day on Thursday 18/6 at
Kempsey. Our first game was against Great
Lakes College. We started off well with a 12
-0 lead. Great Lakes College came back
and narrowed the lead to 12-10. The girls
regrouped and started playing more as a
team, supporting each other and the final
score was 27-10 in our favour.
Our second game was against St Columba
which proved to be a much tougher. The
girls lost 26 points to 5.
Our third and fourth games were against John Paul
College Coffs Harbour and St Paul’s Kempsey. We
won both these games 30 points to 5 and 19 points
to 10 respectively.
A great team effort with every player contributing to
the team’s success on the day. Some valuable
performances were from Jade Pyke, Kate Brown,
Ellie McFadyen, Maddison Stritch and Sheniq Little.
Thank you to Matt Taylor, Bron James, Brett Allan
and Wauchope parents for their support on the day.

Wauchope High School had 4 students
attend #Litfest2444 on the 6th of June.
Litfest is a literary festival that caters to
school students and helps them to tell their
story through a variety of creative and
different platforms. Hayley, Gretchen, Maya
and Abigail followed a set program with
workshops which included object poetry,
writing suspense and Ekphrasis, which is
writing stories that are inspired from
artworks. Gretchen Martin made a beautiful
mono printed journal for her inspired writing.

Mobile phone awareness
Phones reduce the amount of time students are bored. Whilst this sounds positive, research has tested and
shown that boredom is a driver of creativity and productivity. Boredom allows the mind time to wander,
consider complex ideas and form opinions and perspective. People exposed to small periods of boredom
for example give more to charities, are kinder to others and actively become more involved in their
physical and social environment. Reducing student screen time might increase some boredom but will
improve their life.
Dear Parent/Caregiver
The 44th Annual Inter-School Visit between Wauchope High and Cumberland High will be conducted between Wednesday 3rd July and Friday 5th July 2019 at Wauchope High School.
The success of this long running program is highly dependent on our ability to provide comfortable and safe accommodation for up to 100 students travelling from Cumberland to attend the event. This is where we depend upon our school community to provide for the billeting of these students during their stay.
The school has seeking an indication if you are willing to provide accommodation for a student who is participating in the Cumberland Inter-School visit. This activity will involve the provision of accommodation for visiting students from 3rd to 5th July 2019. Billets will be required on the nights of 3rd and 4th July.
The school is very grateful for all offers to billet visiting students. You would be aware that the Department of Education and Training has introduced new policies, procedures and curriculum relating to child protection. The Department, as an agency responsible for the care and welfare of students in schools, has a charter to protect the young people in its care from all forms of abuse.
In order to be able to accept and formalise a billet, we ask that:
the primary parent/caregiver identified in the undertaking to provide a billet, completes and signs the undertaking provided with this letter and returns it to the school for consideration,
ensure all adults residing in your home are aware of this undertaking and the expectations within.
We hope you will enjoy having the billeted student in your home and anticipate that the student will benefit from the experience of staying with you. Please retain this section for future reference.
Return the completed slip below to Mrs Broderick or Mr Hancock, by Friday 28th June, 2019.
Yours sincerely

Year 7 Literacy Transition Day – Term 3
To Parents and Guardians,
This event is organised by the WHS English and Library staff and led by your child’s Year
Advisor, Thomas Bedwell. The ‘Literacy Transition’ focuses on developing links in literacy
between Stages 3 and Stages 4. This partnership supports the ‘Bago Community of Schools’
mission to share expertise and resources between local primary schools and Wauchope High
School. In 2019 Huntingdon PS and Comboyne PS are our partners and will collectively
transport twelve Year 5 students to WHS. As a result of this program we aim to improve the
literacy of students as they progress between stages. It is envisaged that the program will
enhance their reading, comprehension and writing skills which can be applied to all future subject
areas.
The first 18 permission notes we receive will secure a spot. There will be an opportunity in 2020
for those who miss out this year. We look forward to a successful day.
Thomas Bedwell
Year 7 Year Advisor and English teacher
