Faculty Excellence Awards

Every Monday on assembly a different faculty will be presenting their Faculty Excellence Awards.

Students will be chosen for being consistently engaged and achieving academically within that

subject area. Congratulations to the following students.

Just when the Year 11 Biology class thought science couldn’t be any more

interesting...along comes a rat dissection! Thanks Mr Dixon.

The students were permitted to unlock their phones from their Yondr pouches to

film the dissection.

Zone Cross Country A glorious day was had by the WHS Cross Country team at Kempsey Race Course on Friday May 24. A team of 21 headed north to take on the lower mid north coast and was successful in a number of age groups with the following students finishing in the top 10 and making it through to the Regional North Coast Championships to be held at Nana Glen in June.

Amarlie Evans finished 2nd in the U13 girls.

Wayde Coombes finished 2nd in the U16 boys.

Ellie Raymond finished 6th in the U14 girls.

Chad McGovern finished 6th in the U17 boys.

Alivia Ashley finished 7th in the U12 girls.

Kai Martin finished 10th in the U16 boys.

The students were particularly

well behaved and were super

ambassadors for our school.

Congratulations David Hollis who scored a try in the State of

Origin Under 18’s game on Wednesday night.

Mobile phone awareness Andrew Bastawrous, an ophthalmologist, says “There’s definitely a myopia epidemic. Many more people are becoming short -

sighted than they were a decade ago”. This is thought to be a combination of mobile phone usage and a reducing in focusing

outside on people and the environment (also affected by mobile phone usage). “The growth of the eye tends to slow down in your

late teens and stop. But what's happening is that it isn't stopping. It seems to continue”. The implications of this are not just that

there are more people needing glasses, potentially severe visual impairment can result in glaucoma retinal detachment and

another retinal problems.

Thank you to Mrs Virginia Cox who is a wonderful volunteer in our library.

Mrs Cox came to our Makerspace in the library on Friday and opened the students’ minds to the

wonderful world of Zentangles.

You can tell by their beaming smiles how much they enjoyed making Zentangle Bookmarks.

Year 8 students enjoyed a Medieval Show on Thursday 6th June. Students took part in an interactive show that covered a wide range of aspects of medieval life from warfare to more cultural

aspects such as music. Highlights of the show included; the long bow display, the stocks and handling a replica weapon.

outstanding surfer winning state titles in NSW and Qld in the late

Reg Smith (1961-1965) Has represented Australia in Rugby

Union both at home and overseas. Recognised as a great Rugby

Union forward.

Ken Berrigan Represented Queensland in Rugby League (1973).

Bill Marchment Represented N.S.W. Western Division against the

N.Z. All Blacks in 1962.

Margaret Pead (1960 - 1962).Won N.S.W.G.S.S.S.A. 15 years

50 Metres Freestyle Championship at N, Sydney Pool (1962).

Carla Deegenaars (1962 - 1964).Won N.S.W.G.S.S.S.A. Sub-

Junior 50 Metres Breaststroke Champions North Sydney Pool

(1962).

Ian Schubert (1970 - 1974). Toured England with the 1972 Australian Schoolboys' Rugby League

Team (16 years). Represented Australia in the 1976 World Cup - won by Australia - and is a

member 1978 Kangaroo Side currently touring in the U.K.

Sue Goodison School Captain 1972. Represented in Combined University Hockey Team.

Linda Goodison Represented N.S.W. in 1978 - Under 18 years Girls' Hockey.

Perhaps the most outstanding "Sportsman of the Year" was Michael Vaughan (1968 - 1973). After

a splendid School Sporting career, Michael attended Bathurst C.A.E. and, whilst there, was very

seriously injured in a car accident. As a result he was confined to a wheel chair, with little use of

his arms and legs, but his great courage and determination have enabled him to rehabilitate

himself. He now walks unaided, coaches Junior Basketball teams and is employed in the

Commonwealth Public Service. His magnificent spirit should serve as an inspiration to all pupils at

Wauchope High.

(A side note: As part of our major sports awards presented at the end of the year ,MJ Vaughan

sports woman of the year, sportsman of the year and sport star of the year are all named in his

honour)

Woolworths Earn and Learn 2019

Shoppers, we need you!!! Our school will be participating in the Woolworths Earn and

Learn program, all proceeds going to our Support Unit. From Wednesday 1st May to

Tuesday 25th June, we are collecting Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers. This program

gives schools the chance to earn new educational resources. All you need to do to make a

difference at our school is to simply shop at Woolworths and you will receive one

Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco, and gift

cards). Then place the Woolworths sticker onto a Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet. Completed Sticker Sheets

and/or stickers can then be dropped into our collection box in the front foyer here at school. Sticker sheets

are available at our school from the office, Woolworths, or you can download them from

www.woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn.

Every sticker collected benefits our students by providing them with more educational resources. The

range is extensive and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English,

Science, Arts and Craft, Sport and for our library.

U14’s Girl’s Rugby

On Thursday May 30 the next generation of girl’s rugby players ventured to Port Macquarie for

the Zone Championships of the U14’s Waratah Cup.

First up we played St Paul’s Kempsey. At half time the score was 10-10 with tries to Sheniq Little

and Jade Pyke. Our half time discussion was about tackling, tackling and even more tackling. To

the girls credit they did just that keeping Kempsey to two tries in the second half. Jade Pyke

scored two tries and Ellie McFadyen scored another to help us to a 25-20 win. Well done girls.

Our next game was against McKillop College Port Macquarie. In a cracking game of rugby we

prevailed 20-14 with the game going down to the last second. We were up 15-14 when Sheniq

Little scored her second try for the day to secure victory. Other try scorers were Ellie McFadyen,

Jade Pyke and Maddi Stritch.

Best for Wauchope on the day were Kate Brown, Jade Pyke and Ellie McFadyen. All the other

girls contributed to a wonderful day out. Well done girls.

Engineering challenge at Kempsey High School last week. The

students performed well and placed 6th in the challenge

Dear Parent/Caregiver

The 44th Annual Inter-School Visit between Wauchope High and Cumberland High will be conducted between Wednesday 3rd July and Friday 5th July 2019 at Wauchope High School.

The success of this long running program is highly dependent on our ability to provide comfortable and safe accommodation for up to 100 students travelling from Cumberland to attend the event. This is where we depend upon our school community to provide for the billeting of these students during their stay.

The school has seeking an indication if you are willing to provide accommodation for a student who is participating in the Cumberland Inter-School visit. This activity will involve the provision of accommodation for visiting students from 3rd to 5th July 2019. Billets will be required on the nights of 3rd and 4th July.

The school is very grateful for all offers to billet visiting students. You would be aware that the Department of Education and Training has introduced new policies, procedures and curriculum relating to child protection. The Department, as an agency responsible for the care and welfare of students in schools, has a charter to protect the young people in its care from all forms of abuse.

In order to be able to accept and formalise a billet, we ask that:

the primary parent/caregiver identified in the undertaking to provide a billet, completes and signs the undertaking provided with this letter and returns it to the school for consideration,

ensure all adults residing in your home are aware of this undertaking and the expectations within.

We hope you will enjoy having the billeted student in your home and anticipate that the student will benefit from the experience of staying with you. Please retain this section for future reference.
