All in all, 2017 was another veryhappy and successful year forthe Club. We enjoyed twofabulous trips abroad on theTDV’s. Firstly to South WestFrance in May, then to Tuscanyin September.

Members and guests turned out in force tosupport our two portfolio tastings. TheSpring tasting at The Army and Navy Club, followed by our Christmas tastinggenerously hosted at JM Finn courtesy ofWWC member Edward de Vere Hunt.

In May, 24 members and guestsenjoyed a barge trip aboard the LondonPrince Regent in Paddington for a finewine dinner with Marie Zusslin fromAlsace. This was probably our most ‘outthere’ dinner so far!

In 2017, we introduced a series ofMasterclasses at our head office. Thesetastings were designed to give membersthe opportunity to try an array of winesand have a Q&A in a more intimateatmosphere with a grower orrepresentative from some special vineyards.Memorable tastings included ChampagneCastelnau, Chapoutier from Rhone,Domaine Laroche from Chablis and JeanAubron from Loire. We will continue tohost these evenings during 2018.

Feedback on the taster cases hasgenerally been very positive with theselection of Single Grape Varieties in April,Southern French Gems in August and the 9bottle Classical Italian case in December allbeing well received.

Introducing New Membership CategoriesTo provide members with a more flexibleoffering, in terms of both quantity andquality of wines, we have created thefollowing new membership categories.

The Silver membership is the standardmembership offering that you willautomatically be enrolled on to.

Members do not have to commit to acategory permanently, you can switch

between them throughout the year asand when you wish. You will just have tobe set up on our Direct Debit system to beable to move categories.

Please let us know if you would like tomove to the Gold or Bronze categories intime for the April case.

Membership DriveMembership numbers continue to be ouronly real frustration, as we have made lessprogress here than we have planned.

Although we welcomed 28 new membersto the Club throughout 2017, we did lose15 members at the same time.

As mentioned in previous letters andemails, we would like to encourage each ofour members to invite 1 member to jointhe club in 2018. This would quickly doublethe size of our club and thereforesubstantially increase our buying power. We would then be able to pass thesesavings back to you in lower wine prices inmany cases.

We hope that with the additional Goldand Bronze membership categoriesmentioned earlier, we can appeal to a wideraudience, alongside the following initiativethat will be trialled until April 2018.

WHEN YOU SIGN A NEW MEMBER UP TO THE CLUB, WE WILL DELIVER A 6 BOTTLE CASE FREE OF CHARGE

WITH YOUR NEXT DELIVERY.

To sign a new member up, visit thewebsite and select the JOIN THE CLUBtab under the Waud Wine Clubnavigation item.

The highlight of the year wasthe wine tour to Tuscany inSeptember – with our biggestturnout of 23 tourists at someof the world’s most iconicvineyards.

Our first visit was to the famous Frescobaldivineyard of Castello di Nipozzano. They areproducing a range of Chianti, Super Tuscan(IGT) and Brunello wines. The Frescobaldifamily are over 700 years old and aresteeped in history – with Nipozzano beingtheir main family home. After a tour of theCastello and cellars, we sat down for oneof the most impressive tastings the TDVhave ever experienced.

After an enjoyable overnight stay(where we drank fantastic CastellareChianti and Le Macchiole Paleo at dinner!)we headed to our morning tasting atAllegrini’s San Polo vineyard that weeventually managed to find near thefamous town of Montalcino. Head winemaker Riccardo Fratton walked us outaround the vines and then into their cellarsbefore a very interesting technical tastingof his wines.

After lunch in Montalcino, the tourmoved to the South West corner ofTuscany to the famed vineyard of Tua Rita –where we were shown around by thelovely Chiara, before a tasting with ownerand head winemaker Stefano Frascolla. Arelatively young winery of only 40 hectaresproducing world renowned winesincluding; Rosso dei Notri 2015, Perlato delBosco 2014 and Giusto di Notri 2015.

Our hotel on the west coast wasTombolo Talasso Resort in Marina diCastagneto Carducci, that interestingly isowned by the Antinori family for the firstof a two night stay. We walked into townfor dinner.

Day 3 of the tour was the final day’stasting in the famous sub-region ofBolgheri, home of the majority of SuperTuscan wines. We arrived for a 1030morning tasting at one of Allegrini’s othervineyards – Poggio al Tesoro. We had a tourof the vineyard with Valentina Martinelloand head winemaker Lorenzo Fortini. These wines we have been familiar with fora while as we have stocked them in theclub. After a tour of the vineyard, justavoiding the serious rain, we headed backinside for a fabulous and raucous tasting.

After our morning’s drinks party with

Poggio al Tesoro, we popped down theroad to Tenuta San Guido for lunch, wherethey make the famed Sassicaia. This was anexcellent lunch where we enjoyedGrattamaco Vermentino 2015, thenSassicaia’s second wine – Guidalberto 2014.

Saving the best until last, the touringparty made their way back down the roadto Ornellaia – one of the other vineyardsowned by the Frescobaldi family. We wereshown around by Irene Montano who hadan intimate knowledge of the Ornellaiawines, as well as an all-round appreciationof wines from all around the world.Ornellaia is simply vast and they have anincredible art collection in the winery. Aftera tour of some of their vineyards, winemaking facilities and cellars, we headed foran extensive tasting trying the followingwines; Poggio Alle Gazze 2015, Le Volte2015, Variazioni in Rosso dell’Ornellaia2015, Le Serre Nuove 2014 and Ornellaia2014. (we also enjoyed their grappa andolive oils.)

All in all, a very successful tour with asuperb touring party – a fine way to spendour 10th Anniversary tour.

2018 Tours As you will have seen, we plan to tour Loireand Bordeaux in May, then Champagneand Alsace in September. If you would liketo join in the fun, please [email protected] more information.

Away from Bordeaux EnPrimeur and also the winesthat are sold on our website, the Waud Wine Club haveaccess to some other ‘specialwines’ that are released onallocation.

We routinely take our annual allocations ofMas de Daumas Gassac and Paul Jaboulet, but this year we took some special smallallocations of some world famous SuperTuscans wines – Sassicaia and Ornellaia.

However, by far and away the mostsuccessful En Primeur campaign this yearwas for Chateau Beaucastel Coudoulet2016. We sold our full 20 case (12x75)allocation to Club members in under 24hours.

What is En Primeur?

This can also be known as Wine Futures.En Primeur is when you buy wines beforethey are bottled at the winery and arereleased onto the market. These wineprices are without Duty and VAT.

How does En Primeur work?

En Primeur wines are purchased beforebottling and are released onto the marketwhilst they are still at the vineyard. Winesthat are bought En Primeur are sold at ‘InBond’ prices – which means that they areexclusive of Duty & VAT.

When the wines are ready, they aretransported to the UK to our bondedwarehouse at Vinotheque in Burton onTrent. They will remain under bond untilyou are ready to have them delivered. Onlyat the point of delivery, will Duty and VATbe payable.

Why buy “En Primeur”?

The opening En Primeur price of fine winesis usually considerably less expensive thanthe future price of the wine on the openmarket. En Primeur can sometimes be theonly way to buy wines that are verypopular and have limited allocations.

What exactly do I pay?

As mentioned, the En Primeur price of thewine is exclusive of Duty and VAT (but itdoes actually include shipping andinsurance). When the wines arrive into theUK and are delivered into our bond, Dutyand VAT can be then be deferred further ifyou want to keep the wine in temperaturecontrolled conditions. This is highlyrecommended if you plan to re-sell yourwines in the future, as many buyers willneed to be convinced of the winesprovenance.

How much is Wine Duty?

£2.16 per 75cl bottle of still wine. (ex-vat)

£2.77 per 75cl bottle of sparkling wine.(ex-vat)

£2.89 per 75cl bottle of Port wine. (ex-vat)

UK VAT = 20% (applied after duty)Rates are subject to change by the

government at any time.

En Primeur WinesIn 2017, we completed ourthird campaign of BordeauxEn Primeur. This is anotherpart of our business thathas been rapidly growingyear on year.

After deciding not to invest in the ratheraverage 2013 vintage, we were rewardedfor our patience as 2014, 2015 and 2016delivered some of the great wines of recenttimes. It was especially rewarding as it is thefirst time since the 70s where there havebeen three years back to back of very high-quality vintages. We have secured goodallocations of premier wines such as LafiteRothschild, Mouton Rothschild, PontetCanet, Rauzan Segla, Chateau Canon andmore in each of the vintages.

After purchasing £180k of wine in the2014 campaign, we increased to £235k in2015, then to £310k in the 2016campaign.

Of course we have plans to expand thispart of our business this year with the 2017Bordeaux campaign, we look forward tovisiting Bordeaux on the Tour du Vin in May.
